Should Medical Professionalism Include

Advocacy?

Holly G. Atkinson, MDPhysician, TV personality, medical columnist, author, human rights leader, and experienced CEO—expert at helping people make

meaningful change in their lives and in their communities

Dr Atkinson has a medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and an MS degree in journalism from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Colgate University with a BS in biology. She is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and a member of the American Medical Women’s Association.

In this provocative and inspirational keynote address, Dr Atkinson asks, “Should advocacy be part of medical professionalism?” She explores how collective medical advocacy works today, why it is so important in advancing health and human rights, and how physicians can actually “do” advocacy. Dr Atkinson presents the case history of one hugely successful advocacy campaign—the International Campaign to Ban Landmines—in which physicians played a central role and which has had a stunning impact on protecting life and limb around the globe.

HIGHLIGHTED LECTURES

The Course Development Committee of Harvard Medical School and the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA has developed a curriculum designed to bring you the studies, insights, and solutions that will make a significant impact on your daily practice and improve patient care. Choose from more than 55 clinically relevant talks, including these innovative lectures.

THURSDAY, MAY 2, 2013 | 9:30–10:10 am

Diagnosis and Management of Rheumatoid ArthritisThe clinical features of rheumatoid arthritis will be described along with the appropriate laboratory studies and X-rays, followed by a discussion of management strategies. The key concepts of early diagnosis, careful delineation of the extent of the disease and projected prognosis, aggressive management strategy, and the use of objective criteria for a treat-to-target approach will be given.

THURSDAY, MAY 2, 2013 | 4:40–5:20 pm

Top Stories in Women’s Health: Putting Research into PracticeThis talk will provide a succinct review of the top articles from 2012 that broke new ground in women’s health. The focus will be on studies relevant to primary care and findings that potentially will change your practice. With an emphasis on screening and prevention, the topics will include cardiovascular disease, breast and cervical cancer, domestic violence, menopause, and osteoporosis.

FRIDAY, MAY 3, 2013 | 1:30–3:30 pm

Top Stories from the Medical LiteratureThe medical literature is rich with new information that informs the practice of medicine. A small number of recently published articles, chosen for their impact and value to you as a clinician, will be presented.

FRIDAY, MAY 3, 2013 | 5:20–6:00 pm

Understanding the Medicare Annual Wellness VisitAs we enter the era of primary care redesign, all clinicians need to understand the building blocks used for the determination of productivity and compensation. In this presentation, Dr. Goodson will discuss the health promotion and illness prevention services that we in primary care can employ with our patients, specifically focusing on the Medicare Annual Wellness service codes, the long-lasting Welcome to Medicare service code, and the new post-discharge care reconciliation service code that will be available for Medicare patients in 2013.

SATURDAY, MAY 4, 2013 | 10:10–10:50 am

Management of the Young Febrile Child with No Source: New Approaches for a Hot TopicPediatric providers frequently face the challenge of evaluating febrile children 0-3 years of age who appear non-toxic and have no localizing finding on history or physical exam. A variety of guidelines has been developed to assist. Unfortunately, many of these guidelines are based on outdated evidence. Recent developments, including the wide use of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, new information regarding urinary tract infections, and broader recognition of HSV infections, have altered our approach to the care of these children. Building on a review of these recent developments, this talk will describe an up-to-date approach to the evaluation and management of young febrile children.

SATURDAY, MAY 4, 2013 | 1:30–2:10 pm

The Dizzy PatientThis talk will describe the four types of dizziness through simulated patient complaints, explaining some of the anatomy and physiology in each. There will be concepts of treatment of all types of dizziness, with extra attention to BPPV and office-based cure.
