Mending a Broken Heart—Cardiology in the 21st CenturyWilliam O’Neill, MDat�the�time�of�President�Dwight�eisenhower’s�heart�attack�in�1955,�america�was�just�starting�on�an�epidemic�of�coronary�artery�disease�(CaD).��Over�the�last�50�years�the�conquest�of�CaD�has�become�one�of�the�major�accomplishments�of�modern�medicine.��50�years�ago,�male�life�expectancy�was�62�years,�now�it�is�73�years.��Survival�after�onset�of�symptoms�was�8�years,�now�it�is�over�20�years!��Mortality�for�myocardial�infarction�was�20%,�now�it�is�less�than�5%!��numerous�scientific�advances�share�credit�for�the�conquest�of�CaD:�Smoking�cessation,�control�of�hypertension�and�cholesterol,�coronary�bypass�and�angioplasty�therapy�of�acute�Mi�have�all�contributed�to�the�dramatic�decrease�in�age-adjusted�mortality.

However,�we�cannot�rest�on�our�laurels;�the�mission�is�far�from�accomplished!��Smoking�incidence�is�up�in�young�people�and�sedentary�life�styles�and�obesity�may�bring�a�new�wave�of�coronary�patients.��For�these�reasons�refinements�in�care�and�research�advancements�are�still�essential.

About the Presentation: Dr�O’neill,�international�leader�in�interventional�cardiology�and�the�research�of�new�diagnostic�and�treatment�techniques�for�obstructed�heart�arteries,�will�present�promising�new�tools,�like�hybrid�robotic�approaches�to�CaD,�advances�in�biodegradable�stents,�exciting�new�advances�in�stem�cells,�therapies�for�valvular�heart�disease,�and�non-surgical�advances�in�aortic�stenosis,�mitral�regurgitation,�and�aortic�aneurysms,�as�well�as�community�wide�initiatives�to�improve�and�regionalize�Mi�care�

The Promise of Primary CareJohn D. Goodson, MD, FACP

Dr�goodson,�Deputy�Director�of�the�Harvard�Medical�School�Course�Development�Committee,�has�been�a�primary�care�practitioner�for�35�years�in�the�internal�Medicine�associates,�a�primary�care�internal�medicine�practice�based�at�the�Massachusetts�general�Hospital�(MgH).�in�his�early�career�as�a�medical�educator,�Dr�goodson�expanded�the�primary�care�training�program�at�the�MgH.�He�continues�to�teach�in�his�practice�and�on�the�ward�in�patient�service.�He�has�organized�and�taught�primary�care�continuing�education�for�30�years.�nationally,�he�has�been�involved�in�heath�care�advocacy�for�the�Society�of�general�internal�Medicine�(SgiM)�and�the�american�College�of�Physicians�(aCP).��He�maintains�his�own�private�practice,�seeing�60-70�patients�per�week,�and�admits�and�rounds�on�his�own�in�patients.

About the Presentation: Dr�goodson�will�briefly�summarize�the�current�challenges�facing�primary�care�practice�and�then�discuss�the�many�current�opportunities�to�rebuild�the�primary�care�workforce.�there�are�aspects�of�the�2011�health�care�legislation�that�are�quite�favorable�and�there�is�a�growing�public�support�for�our�work�but�improvement�is�by�no�means�assured.�Dr�goodson�will�present�examples�of�how�primary�care�has�been�maintained�and�restored�and�will�go�on�to�assert�that�in�the�end,�we�need�to�marshal�the�support�of�every�primary�care�provider�and�all�engage�in�a�national�effort�to�expand�primary�care.
