INSIDE FRONT COVER

Dear Friends of PRI, Throughout our history, PRI has distinguished itself as a nimble organization, able to anticipate and respond to the needs of stations and audiences as we fulfill our mission: to serve as a distinct content source of information, insights and cultural experiences essential to living in an interconnected world. This experience served us well in the year just closed, as we saw the pace of change in media accelerate, and faced new challenges as a result. More and more, people are turning to mobile devices to consume news, using them to share, to interact, and to learn even more. These new consumer expectations require that we respond, inspiring us to continue to deliver our unique stories in ways that touch the heart and mind. And to deliver them not only through radio, but also on new platforms. Technology also creates a more competitive environment, enabling access to global news and cultural content that did not exist before.

In this environment, PRI worked to provide value to people curious about our world and their place in it. With a robust portfolio of content as a strong foundation for growth, PRI worked to enhance our role as a source of diverse perspectives. We expanded our relationship with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and identified new voices for broadcast. We built upon our existing distribution and technology expertise to make our content available on new platforms, allowing people to engage more deeply with the stories they heard. We contributed our skills in engagement and social media to the State Integrity Investigation, inspiring the public to become more invested in effective state government.

We also looked at new ways of collaborating so we could increase our effectiveness in creating and distributing content. As a result, we developed a stronger partnership with WGBH, one of PRI’s founders and long-time production partner at “PRI’s The World®.” This partnership, finalized in early FY13, gives us access to new skills and insights that will enable us to create more content, and reach more people in more ways as we look forward to the future.

Our many partners – including producers, stations, donors, talent, sponsors and, most importantly, audiences – are a source of constant encouragement in this changing world. Thank you for your continuing support.

Sincerely, Alisa A. Miller

This future is here.

Like it or not, it’s been here for a

while. And it’s here to stay. What

does the future bring? In a word:

change. Change you can fight or

embrace. At PRI, we’re going with

the latter.

In a time of industry-wide evolution,

we’re not just holding our own —

we’re thriving. We remain true to our

vision and our mission. Any way you

look at it, we’re successful. We’re

proud of our accomplishments,

but we’re not about to rest. A shift-

ing landscape requires constant

response. We’re a smart, savvy,

future-focused business. Hearing

a different voice is our calling, and

adapting to change is our model.

The World “PRI’s The World” is the

only daily program devoted to making

global affairs relevant and compelling to

American audiences. Through a mix of

news, features and interviews, on a wide

range of topics including science, busi-

ness, technology, sports, art and music,

“PRI’s The World” journeys where other

shows won’t, every day taking listeners

on a one-of-a-kind trip around the globe.

The series Beyond Class went well beyond the typical by looking at class through the eyes of a bank employee in Egypt, a TV producer in Ukraine, an Indian scientist in New Jersey, a farmer in China, and a former mineworker in Britain.

Since Lisa Mullins became anchor of “PRI's The World” in 1998, the program has doubled its audience and won critical acclaim. Lisa won a 2012 Gracie Award for Outstanding Anchor, given by the Alliance for Women in Media.

In 2012, “PRI’s The World” awarded three Hale Fellow-ships, which train future generations of public radio journalists to produce stories highlighting how international issues have an impact on the U.S, and how domestic stories reverberate globally.

Day 6 In 2012 we deepened our relationship with CBC Radio by adding “Day 6” to our weekend lineup. “Day 6,” hosted by Brent Bambury, takes the week's biggest stories — from news headlines to pop culture — and explores them in unexpected, humorous and irreverent ways.

To the Point Warren Olney, host of “To The Point,” won the inaugural Bill Stout Memorial Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism.

Smiley & West The Poverty Tour: A Call to Conscience — an 18-city, 11-state bus tour — was the focus of PRI’s “Smiley & West,” hosted by broadcaster Tavis Smiley and Princeton professor Dr. Cornel West.

Afropop Since 1988, “Afropop Worldwide” has been reporting on the music of Africa. Their Hip Deep project explores the stories behind this music, from the trendiest clubs to the dawn of civilization.

The Takeaway Our alternative morning show, “The Takeaway” produced with WNYC, is known for its fresh, spontaneous approach and listener interaction via social media. As a response to an evolving market, we changed the show’s format and length, increasing carriage from X to Y.

Studio 360 The Peabody Award-winning "Studio 360 with Kurt Andersen," is a smart and surprising guide to what's happening in pop culture and the arts.

Studio 360 Redesigns takes ubiquitous designs and gives them a 21st-century makeover. The project began when the show set out to redesign Canada, with a new slogan and a new look. They invited another PRI mainstay, “Q with Jian Ghomeshi,” to join in on the fun and redesign America.

Studio 360 with Kurt Andersen won two 2012 National Edward R. Murrow Awards, for Audio Feature Reporting and Use of Sound.

2The future of radioisn’t just radio.

We’re building new platforms, access points and relationships to make our stories available to more people in more ways. Extending

our reach —and our impact.

201210{ 201211{

Radio is a medium unlikeany other. Some say it’s the most visual medium of all, inspiring listeners to create their own visual universe. We believe in the power of radio, and in the freedom of digital. Today our friends and fans can experience content how and when they want it. They can like or toss. Share or save. Add to or comment on. PRI understands this exciting inevitability.

Page 8: PRI 2012 Annual Report Mechanical · 2017. 11. 28. · PRI 2012 Annual Report Mechanical 11” x 8.375” folded to 5.5” x 8.375” Prepared by See Design, Inc. Christopher Everett

Recently “PRI’s The World” began offering content to the BBC for use on its many global websites. These stories, made available as an audio track and as text, are then translated and paired with visuals. What starts as English-language audio transforms into multi-language, fully visualized story, able to reach millions of people around the world.

As a result of the Studio 360 Redesigns series, we developed and released “Teacher Redesign,” a multi-touch book for iPads that uses audio, video and interactive graphics — a first of its kind in public media.

May 10, 2012 marked the third and most successful digital cinema event for “This American Life,” when Things You Can’t do on the Radio was transmitted live in HD via satellite to more than 500 movie theaters across the country.

May 16, 2012 PRI’s global audio and text-based content debuted on Flipboard.

December,2011 PRI launched with Google Currents, and we were the first to deliver audio content.

Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation In 2012, PRI received a two-year, $1.6 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to lead a major initiative to raise awareness, under-standing and engagement around critical issues of health and development worldwide. This grant continues the partnership we began in 2004.

State Integrity Investigation In 2012, PRI partnered with the Center for Public Integrity and Global Integrity on The State Integrity Investigation, an unprecedented, data-driven analysis of each state’s laws and practices that deter corruption and promote accountability and openness.

Canadian Broadcasting Corp. PRI is the exclusive U.S. distributor of select CBC programs, and in 2012 we added a fourth to the family: "Studio 360 with Kurt Andersen" — which joins "WireTap," "As It Happens," and “Q with Jian Ghomeshi.”

3Moving forward, together.

201214{ 201215{

The future poses many questions, but one thing is certain: we will continue to surround ourselves with the best of the best. As they say, it takes a village. And in the future, just like today, our village is full of organizations and individuals who share our passion for telling a new story, for sharing a unique perspective, and for hearing a different voice.
