2:30 p.m. Old Town and Ostrów Tumski

The Wrocław Market Square is almost 3.8 hectares and is one of the largest former market squares in Poland. It attracts with the charm of historic tenement houses, the spontaneity and climate of the unique center of the European metropolis. However, the late-Gothic town hall with a 66-meter high tower is the most magnificent building of this type in the country. The basement is the Świdnicka Cellar, one of the oldest gastronomic venues in Europe.

The Old Town may be the heart of Wrocław, but its soul is in Ostrów Tumski. This ‘Cathedral Island’ within easy walking distance northeast of the market square was the first part of Wrocław to be settled by Slavic tribes in the 9th century. For centuries it was subject to ecclesiastical authority, today it is a romantic place, popular among lovers, walkers and tourists. The oldest building on Ostrów is an intimate late Romanesque church. St. Idzi, comes from the beginning of the 13th century.

Cathedral John the Baptist was built in the gothic style in a place where earlier smaller temples stood. It was rebuilt several times and expanded. During the Second World War, during the siege of Festung Breslau, it was almost completely destroyed. Meticulously rebuilt, it plays the role of the "mother of churches" of Lower Silesia.

There are many interesting buildings on Ostrów Tumski, including The 13th-century Collegiate Church of the Holy Cross and the church of St. Bartholomew, a monument to Saint. John of Nepomuk, Archbishops' Palace, kluski gate. A popular meeting place and tourist attraction are the Tumski Bridge between Wyspa Piaskowa and Ostrow. For a dozen or so years, lovers have hung on it padlocks symbolizing the durability of their love.

There is also an Archdiocese Museum - for over 100 years ithas been collecting sacred art monuments, which, withdrawn from cult use, have great historical and artistic value. Among them, we can find the "Book of Henrykow" from the XIII-XIV century, with the first sentence written in Polish.

2:30 p.m. Zoo Wroclaw & Africarium

Wroclaw ZOO has more than 150 year old history, making it the oldest in the country. It is also the most famous one thanks to the TV show “With a camera among animals”. The zoo has the most animal species (as many as 1100), ranging from the tiniest ones like the cockroaches to the largest ones like the elephants.

Afrykarium is the biggest attraction of the zoo - Poland's first oceanarium and a unique one in the world. Roughly 5 000 animals are housed in it, mainly fish, including seven species of sharks. Amazing manatees, Nile hippos, aardvarks, naked mole-rats, and dozens of free-flying birds can also be found here. A visit to Afrykarium is akin to taking a two-hour tour of the Dark Continent!

Other attractions of the zoological garden include Odrarium, the unusual exhibition of Polish flora and fauna of the nearby Oder River; Dragons of Indonesia, where the large lizards from the other end of the world can be admired. Furthermore, ZOO Wroclaw, as the only one in the country, is a home to very rare species such as the manatee, okapi, bear cuscus, red hartebeest, Philippine mouse-deer, L'Hoest's monkey, long-necked turtle, and the aforementioned Komodo dragon (http://www.nowa.zoo.wroclaw.pl)
