In its 45th year, the Western Athletic Conference continues to evolve and features some of the nation’s best intercollegiate competition. One thing that remains unchanged is the persistent nature of the nine schools in the WAC to advance their programs to contend at the top levels of the NCAA.

The WAC provides its student-athletes the chance to travel to scenic destinations and gain exposure in some of the nation’s most diverse markets. In addition, the WAC’s student-athletes work to achieve the highest levels of success with the academic support of their respective institutions.

The WAC has experienced tremendous success. Over the past four years, it has won 57.1 percent of its bowl games, the second best winning percentage of any conference in the nation. In the past three seasons, the WAC has sent a total of 11 teams to bowl games. Boise State has won 53 games since joining the conference, the fourth most in the nation. In men’s basketball, the WAC has sent at least two teams to the NCAA Tournament in 22 of the past 23 seasons. Every current school in the WAC has competed in the NCAA Tourna-ment since 1990. Fresno State softball and Louisiana Tech women’s basketball have both competed in every NCAA Tournament ever held.

In 2001, the WAC partnered with ESPN and added a regional network for unprecedented coverage of football and basketball. Over the past three years, the networks have shown a total of 72 football games, by far the most in a three-year period in WAC history.

Presently, the WAC crowns team and individual champions in 19 sports – eight men’s and 11 women’s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, indoor track and fi eld and outdoor track and fi eld. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and fi eld, outdoor track and fi eld and volleyball.

FRESNO STATE 2007 FOOTBALL

There weren’t many pleased with the fi nal results from the 2006 Fresno State football campaign, the least of whom was 10-year head coach Pat Hill.

As with every season under his watch, the year began with incredibly high expectations and the goal of winning a WAC title and reach-ing a BCS Bowl game. Unfortunately and inex-plicably, the Dogs fi nished the season at 4-8, 4-4 in the WAC for fi fth place.

“We always have high expectations placed on us,” said Hill. “We wouldn’t want it any other way. What most people don’t realize is that we put far more pressure on ourselves that any outsider could. The bottom line in college football is winning and we are in a business, and make no mistake college foot-ball is big business, where winning is the only thing that’s acceptable. As a head coach of a program like Fresno State, I know that and take full responsibility.”

After a season opening win against WAC rival Nevada on national television, the Dogs were already one-up on the competition for the conference title. The Wolf Pack had upset Fresno State the season before, stripping the Dogs from winning the WAC crown. Even with a rookie quarterback and a running back whose injured knee hadn’t been fully tested, Fresno State still had high expectations of a team that returned 17 starters from the 2005 Liberty Bowl. The game was never in doubt as the Dogs, in front of a raucous Bulldog Stadium crowd beat Nevada 28-14.

To reach a BCS bowl game, the Dogs knew an

undefeated regular season was needed and a win over No. 10 Oregon in the second game of the season would put them in great position. A capacity crowd packed Bulldog Stadium as a national television audience witnessed one of

the West’s top non-conference match-ups. For the third straight season and the fi fth in Hill’s 10 seasons, the Dogs and Ducks have played. Each game has been a classic in its own right. This game was no different. Both teams battled hard and in the end, a couple big special teams plays by the Ducks, including a well executed fake fi eld goal for a touchdown was the difference in a 31-24 Oregon victory.

After two games and sitting 1-1, Fresno State found that Dwayne Wright was healthy and going to be a force to be reckoned with, and Fresno State’s offensive line was better than advertised.

Week three saw the Dogs take on a Pac-10 opponent again, but this time in hostile terri-tory, historic Husky Stadium on the banks of Lake Washington in Seattle. In their previous visit in the 2004 season, the Bulldogs came away with a win. This season, the Dogs fell to the Huskies 21-20, a game Fresno State failed to capitalize on multiple opportunities.

The Dogs continued a grueling four-game stretch taking on perennial power Colorado State. The Rams played, what they later de-scribed as their best game in several years, and beat the Bulldogs 35-23.

On paper, the Dogs were expected to get a break from the tough stretch of games, as has been stated many times, the game’s not played on paper. Fresno State returned to Logan, Utah to take on the Aggies, renewing a decades past rivalry. The two teams entered the game with

one win combined. While Fresno State’s defense played well, the Dogs couldn’t get anything going on offense and fell to the Aggies 13-12 on a rain-soaked Romney Stadium.

After fi ve games of the season, the Dogs stood 1-4 and were facing what would be the three toughest opponents in the next three games. First was the rival Hawaii Warriors, who came into Bulldog Stadium with one of the most prolifi c offenses in NCAA history. The Dogs couldn’t slow-down national passing leader Colt Brennan in a 68-37 loss.

Next the Dogs had to travel to Death Valley to face LSU, a team that would fi nish the season ranked No. 3 in the nation. Fresno State’s of-fense continued to sputter, so Hill elected to go to reserve Sean Norton, who off bench brought a spark to the squad in the loss to Hawaii. The Tigers were too much, beating the Dogs 38-6.

After a trip to Death Valley, one would think any road trip would be easy. Not so, when the Dogs went to Boise State’s Bronco Stadium and the fabled blue turf. In what has become one of the WAC’s toughest venues, the Broncos showed the type of magic that saw them through to a Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma, beating Fresno State 45-21.

Now standing 1-7, and just facing two teams on the road that would fi nish the season ranked in the Top 5, the Dogs returned to the friendly con-fi nes of Bulldog Stadium. In their fi nal two home games, Fresno State drew a line in the sand, went back to the basics and rebounded with wins over New Mexico State and Idaho by a combined score of 55-18.

Prior to the New Mexico State game, that Hill and the Dogs agreed they were not playing up to the standards of Bulldog football, and removed the proud Bulldog logo from their helmets. Hill didn’t wear his trademark red Bulldog hat, marking the fi rst time in his coaching career.

The Dogs fi nished the season winning three of their fi nal four games, including a thrilling 34-27 win at Louisiana Tech on national television. It was a great showcase for Wright, who ran for a school-record 295 yards. Wright fi nished the season ranked No. 6 in the NCAA in rush-ing yards. He was the unanimous MVP selec-tion by his teammates.

Fresno State lost to San Jose State 24-14 in the season fi nale. This was Hill’s only loss to the rival Spartans and snapped a 13-game Bulldog winning streak in the series.

A couple Bulldogs, senior tackle Chris Denman and senior linebacker Dwayne An-drews, were selected fi rst-team All-WAC. Denman joined Wright, cornerback Mar-cus McCauley and receiver Paul Williams as players taken in the NFL Draft.

While the results on the fi eld weren’t up to Hill’s standards, the success in the classroom was once again excellent. Four-teen Bulldogs were named to the Academic All-WAC team, the second-most in school history. Four Bulldogs posted a perfect 4.0 GPA, and kicker Clint Stitser was awarded the Dean’s Medal from the prestigious Craig School of Business as the outstand-ing graduating senior. It marked the second straight year a Bulldog football player won that distinction.

“I really can’t put my fi nger on why the season went the way it did,” said Hill. “It was a blip on the radar and we will be back. I’m proud of the many things we ac-complished, especially watching 14 of our 18 seniors graduate. We will be back, I promise.”

FRESNO STATE 2007 FOOTBALL

GAME 2Sept. 9, 2006No. 20 Oregon 31, Fresno State 24

FRESNO, Calif. - Kicker Paul Martinez scored on a 4-yard run on a fake fi eld goal with 4:55 left and No. 20 Oregon avoided becom-ing Fresno State’s latest upset victim by using big special teams plays to beat the Bulldogs 31-24.

With the score tied at 24 late in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs (1-1) appeared to stop the Ducks on third-and-goal from the 4-yard line.

Holder Brady Leaf then took the snap for the fi eld goal and ran to his left, drawing two defenders before tossing the ball to Martinez on an option play. Martinez stumbled in from the 4 for the tiebreaking score.

Oregon’s previous touchdown was also set up on a

GAME 1Sept. 1, 2006Fresno State 28, Nevada 19

FRESNO, Calif. - Dwayne Wright rushed for 158 yards in his fi rst game in nearly two years, scoring his third touchdown on an outstanding 9-yard run with 6:55 left in Fresno State’s 28-19 victory over Nevada in a game televised nationally by ESPN.

Tom Brandstater passed for 124 yards and a score in his fi rst start for the Bulldogs, who opened their season with a Western Athletic Con-ference victory that snapped Nevada’s fi ve-game winning streak from the 2005 season.

The meeting of two WAC powers was a high-stakes way to open the year, but Fresno State had just enough offensive consistency to hold on after Nevada trimmed a 15-point lead to 21-19 early in the fourth quarter.

Mike McCoy caught two TD passes from Jeff Rowe for the Wolf Pack, who won their fi nal four WAC games and the Hawaii Bowl last season while sharing the conference title with Boise State. Rowe passed for 183 yards, and Robert Hubbard rushed for 103 - but Nevada’s defense never quite stopped Wright.

Wright had a 1,000-yard campaign in 2003, but missed most of the last two seasons with a knee injury. He hadn’t played since Sept. 11, 2004, but the junior made several thrilling runs - including a 40-yard TD sprint - in his fi rst game as the one-man replacement for last season’s tailback tandem of Wendell Mathis and Bryson Sumlin.

Fresno State’s young offense relied on him heavily, with 26 carries - and Wright saved his best run for the fi nal moments. With roughly 7 minutes to play, Wright broke fi ve tackles and lunged across the goal line as the Bulldog Stadium crowd roared to its feet.

Tyler Clutts sacked Rowe at the Fresno State 25 with 20 seconds left to end it.

Brandstater’s fi rst appearance seemed to be worthy of the hype: Hitting receivers with precision and poise, he went 16-of-24 and led a scoring drive in every quarter. His 6-yard TD fade to Joe Fernandez in the fi rst quarter was perfectly placed.

Nevada fumbled a simple handoff on its opening drive of the second half, and Wright broke through the line for a 40-yard score on the Bulldogs’ next play.

But McCoy caught a 21-yard scoring pass late in the third quarter, and Nevada pulled within 21-19 on Luke Lippincott’s 1-yard TD plunge early in the fourth.

key play from a fi eld goal after Fresno State tied it at 17 on Dwayne Wright’s 1-yard run on the opening drive of the second half.

The Bulldogs appeared to seize the momentum when Bear Pascoe blocked Martinez’s 36-yard fi eld goal at-tempt. But instead of letting the ball roll dead and taking possession, a Fresno State player tried to recover the ball. The ball squirted loose and Matt Toeaina recovered at the 5 for the Ducks. Jeremiah Johnson ran it in on the next play to make it 24-17.

But Fresno State answered with a 74-yard drive to open the fourth quarter, started by a 40-yard run by Wright. Brandstater added a key 15-yard scramble on second-and-14 to set up his own 1-yard score that tied it at 24 with 10:57 remaining.

Johnson ran for 74 yards and two touchdowns and set up two scores with long punt returns as he starred in place of injured starter Jonathan Stewart.

This marked the 28th game the Bulldogs have played against BCS conference teams in Hill’s 10th season as coach, but it was just the fi fth at home.

Dennis Dixon was 33-for-36 for 240 yards for the Ducks, adding a few key scrambles as well. Jaison Wil-liams had six catches for 106 yards.

Dwayne Wright ran 29 times for 154 yards and a score for the Bulldogs.

FRESNO STATE 2007 FOOTBALL

GAME 3Sept. 16, 2006Washington 21, Fresno State 20

SEATTLE - Washington’s Caesar Rayford leaped above the Fresno State line and blocked a game-tying extra point with 4:30 remaining as the Huskies held on for a 21-20 win over the Bulldogs.

Fresno State had scored on Dwayne Wright’s second rushing touchdown, a 1-yard reach across the goal line. But Rayford’s right hand blocked Clint Stitser’s PAT to keep the Huskies on top by a point. Stitser had earlier missed badly on a 41-yard fi eld goal attempt.

The Bulldogs got the ball back a fi nal time. But Washington’s Mesphin Forrester intercepted Tom Brandstater’s pass and returned it to the Fresno State 1 with just over a minute left.

Wright, the nation’s third-leading rusher coming in, ran for 136 yards on 28 carries for the Bulldogs (1-2). He now has 448 yards this season, the highest total through three games in Fresno State history.

Washington took a 21-14 lead fi ve minutes into the fi nal quarter on Isaiah Stanback’s second touchdown pass. Sonny Shackleford made a leaping catch while grabbing an 8-yard pass off the arm of Bulldogs safety Vincent Mays.

Fresno State evened the game at 14 just three plays into the third quarter. Brandstater perfectly placed a soft pass onto the hands of Paul Williams, who was rubbing shoulders with Washington’s Matt Fountaine. Williams dragged Fountaine the fi nal 5 yards of a 38-yard touchdown pass..

Stanback gave Washington a 14-7 lead late in the fi rst half. His zigzagging 36-yard run off a scramble led to a 6-yard sprint into the end zone on a quarterback draw. Coach Tyrone Willingham extended that drive by going for a fourth-and-1 at his own 49. Stanback converted that with a 2-yard sneak, part of his 91-yard rushing day.

Wright rolled for 82 yards in the fi rst half, through 12 missed tackles by Washington’s fl ailing defenders.

Wright had 43 yards on the game’s opening drive. That ended with his fi fth touchdown run of the season, a 1-yard scoring dive.

Washington answered with the fi rst of its two, 13-play touchdown drives of the opening half. Stanback converted a third-and-20 with a 38-yard completion to Marcel Reece to the Bulldogs’ 16. A scrambling Stanback then found Johnie Kirton open in the back of the end zone from 5 yards out.

FRESNO, Calif. - Caleb Hanie passed for 248 yards and three touchdowns, and Damon Morton returned a punt 58 yards for a score in Colorado State’s 35-23 vic-tory over Fresno State.

Morton, Luke Roberts and tight end Kory Sperry caught TD passes as the Rams (3-1) rallied from a halftime defi cit with 21 straight points. Mor-ton had fi ve catches for 103 yards as Colorado State bounced back from a loss to Nevada two weeks prior.

Tom Brandstater was just 19-of-42 for 205 yards, throwing three interceptions as the Bulldogs got off to their fi rst 1-3 start since 1998 - Hill’s second year at Fresno State. That team fi nished 5-6, still Hill’s only los-ing campaign in a stellar decade.

Sperry had a 53-yard TD catch in the second quarter, and Roberts put Colorado State ahead for good with a 14-yard TD reception midway through the third quarter from Hanie, who went 15-of-23.

Morton added a 41-yard scoring catch with 9 1/2 minutes to play for the Rams.

Chastin West caught a TD pass for the Bulldogs, but the emotional fi re that drove Hill’s best teams still hasn’t emerged in his latest bunch. Even tailback Dwayne Wright struggled, managing just 77 yards after getting more than 100 in each of Fresno State’s fi rst three games.

Fresno State’s Josh Sherley returned a blocked punt y returned a blocked punt y15 yards for a score with 5:56 to play, but the extra-point attempt was blocked.

Wright scored on a 1-yard dive on Fresno State’s fi rst drive, but Colorado State replied with Gartrell Johnson’s 1-yard TD run. The Rams went ahead midway through the second quarter when Sperry caught a short pass from Hanie and rumbled through at least four potential tacklers on the way to the end zone.

Fresno State took a 17-14 halftime lead with a 66-yard scoring drive in the fi nal minute, capped by West’s 28-yard TD catch with 8 seconds left.

Fresno State’s Clifton Smith returned Colorado State’s fi rst punt 35 yards the fi rst time he touched the ball this season. The return specialist hadn’t played since tearing ligaments in his lef

FRESNO, Calif - Colt Brennan picked apart Fresno State’s defense, throwing for 409 yards, and matched a season-high fi ve touchdowns in Hawaii’s 68-37 victory over the Bulldogs.

Hawaii picked up its fi rst win over Fresno State in three years. Two seasons ago, Fresno State rolled to a 70-14 victory over Hawaii at Bulldog Stadium.

Hawaii’s defense stepped up in the fi rst quarter forc-ing two fumbles that later resulted in touchdowns. Ikaika Alama-Francis recovered Dwayne Wright’s fumble at the Bulldogs 24. Four plays later, Nate Illaoa scored his second TD on a 5-yarder.

Adam Leonard picked up Hawaii’s second fumble recovering at the Fresno State’s 42. Hawaii capitalized when Brennan connected on a 3-yard TD pass to Ian Sample in the second quarter for a 28-7 lead.

Sean Norton, who took over for Tom Brandstaterin the second quarter, threw a 20-yard touchown pass to Pascoe. Hawaii responded with a 7-play, 65-yard drive, capped by Illaoa’s 20-yard touchdown run that put Hawaii up for good 35-14.

Fresno State’s only lead came in the fi rst quarter when Tom Brandstater hit Bear Pascoe for a 75-yard touchdown pass. Norton was 14-of-24 for 225 yards and three touchdowns.

GAME 8Nov. 1, 2006No. 14 Boise State 45, Fresno State 21

BOISE, Idaho - Jared Zabransky threw with ef-fi ciency, Ian Johnson found the end zone twice and No. 14 Boise State beat Fresno State.

Zabransky passed for 180 yards and three touch-downs, Johnson rushed for 136 yards and the Broncos routed the Bulldogs 45-21.

Overshadowed much of the season by Johnson - the national leader in touch-downs - Zabransky directed the Broncos to scores on three consecutive possessions in the fi rst half. He also led scoring drives the fi rst two times Boise State had the ball in the second half.

Fresno State lost its seventh straight since opening the season with a 28-19 win over Nevada. It’s the fi rst time the Bulldogs have lost seven straight in one season since 1929.

Contained to mostly 5- and 6-yard gains, Johnson busted a 32-yard run down to the Fresno State 2 midway through the fourth quarter, carrying Bulldogs defenders the fi nal 10 yards. He capped the drive with a

BATON ROUGE, La.- Dwayne Bowe caught a 58-yard touchdown pass to ice the No. 14 Tigers’ 38-6 victory over Fresno State.

Craig Davis returned a punt 77 yards for a score and later caught a 30-yard touchdown pass for LSU. Running back Alley Broussard scored on a 21-yard touch-down run as well.

JaMarcus Russell was 15-of-19 passing for 210 yards and two touchdowns.

Fresno State kicker Clint Stitser made fi eld goals of 35 and 29 yards, the second one getting the Bulldogs (1-6) as close as 17-6 midway through the third quarter.

But the Tigers responded with a six-play, 67-yard scoring drive capped by Broussard’s score as the Tigers began to pull away. Bowe scored on LSU’s next drive, then Russell hit Davis to make it 38-6 with just under 10 minutes remaining.

Fresno State quarterback Sean Norton completed 13-of-20 passes for 134 yards against LSU. He was sacked four times, however, and did not lead a touch-down drive.

LSU also held running back Dwayne Wright, who came in averaging 113 yards, to 43 yards on 15 car-ries.

The opening kickoff was delayed about 19 minutes because of lightning that struck nearby during heavy rain in the hours leading up to the game and the stadium appeared to be less than half full. The rain had stopped by the time the game had gotten under way, but the fi eld was saturated and splashed as players were tackled.

On LSU’s opening drive, Trindon Holliday took a pitch and bolted through huge hole off tackle before bouncing outside for a 38-yard touchdown. Minutes later, Davis cleanly hauled in a punt, darted past a handful of tack-lers, then sprinted along the sideline to make it 14-0 before seven minutes had elapsed.

GAME 11Nov. 25, 2006Fresno State 34, Louisiana Tech 27

RUSTON, La. - Dwayne Wright’s 33-yard touchdown run with just 0:53 seconds on the clock propelled Fresno State to a 34-27 win over Louisiana Tech.

The win was sealed when Tech quarterback Zac Champion threw an intercep-tion to Damon Jenkins at the Fresno State 42 with 00:27 to play. It was Jenkins’ second pick of the night.

Wright rushed for a Fresno State school record 295 yards on 25 carries, his fi nal carry of the night proving to be the game-winner.

Wright’s heroics were set up when Louisiana Tech tied the game at 27-27 with just 2:20 to play on a three-yard Patrick Jackson touchdown run set up after a 60-yard Champion completion to Josh Wheeler.

The Bulldogs had an opportunity to take the lead but Danny Horwedel’s extra point hit the left upright and the game remained tied.

Fresno State took the ensuing kickoff and drove 75 yards on fi ve plays in 1:27 with the big play being a 15-yard completion from Tommy Brandstater to Joe Fernandez on third down and 10 immediately prior to Wright’s touchdown run.

After the two teams traded touchdowns early in the second quarter, Jackson put Louisiana Tech ahead on a 100-yard kickoff return, the fi rst by a Bulldog player since Eddie Brown accomplished the feat against Louisi-ana-Lafayette in 1989.

Brandstater completed 14-of-23 for 142 yards, one interception and three touchdowns.

Champion led Tech with 189 yards passing and one score while adding a career-high 77 yards rushing on 13 carries and one score.

Jackson set a career-high 277 all-purpose yards for

the Tech, including the school record-tying kickoff return.
