It's simple - in order to pressurise a DryRiser System with water, and simulateusage by the Fire and Rescue Service,you must have the right equipment!

Wet Risers

A Wet Riser System is kept permanentlycharged with water from a pressurised supply.

Utilising the town mains water supply, aseries of pumps maintain water levels inlarge storage tanks, normally located onthe uppermost level of the building.

Each floor is fitted with an outlet valve,gravity fed from the storage tanks, towhich a fire fighting hose can be connected.

Service - Two inspections per annum inaccordance with BS 9990: 2006.

Six Monthly - Visual and functional test-ing of all pipe work, brackets, valvesand cabinets.

Annually - In addition to the six monthinspection, the following checks shouldbe carried out:

Cleanliness of storage tanks.

Flow Test.

Thorough inspection of the boosterpumps and their associated mechanical& electrical equipment.

Dry Risers

Dry Risers are normally only chargedwith water when required by the fireand rescue service.

An inlet valve is provided at street levelallowing a fire service pump or engineto be connected. Each floor of thebuilding is fitted with an outlet valve onto which a fire fighting hose can beattached. Water is then pumpedthrough the riser for delivery at the relevant area of the building.

Service - It is imperative that a maintenance regime is adhered to on a six monthly basis.

Six Monthly - Visual and functional testing of all pipe work, brackets, valvesand cabinets.

Annually - In addition to the six monthinspection, the system is pressurised withwater to a pressure of 10bar andchecked for leaks.

Why maintain my dry/wet riser?

Risers can be prone to neglect andeven vandalism, so it is important tohave them regularly maintained andinspected. With the potential for penalties should they fail to function inthe event of a fire, the risers should bevisually inspected every 6 months andhydraulically pressure tested annually inaccordance with BS 9990.

Maintenance of measures provided for protection of fire-fighters

"Where necessary in order to safeguardthe safety of fire-fighters in the event of a fire, the responsible person mustensure that the premises and any facilities, equipment and devices provided in respect of the premises forthe use by or protection of fire-fightersunder this order or under any other enactment, including any enactmentrepealed or revoked by this order, are subject to a suitable system of maintenance and are maintained in anefficient state, in efficient working orderand in good repair"
