Model, Entrepreneur, Blogger, Musician, Make-up artist. You name it Doe Deere can do it. Pretty caught up with Doe to talk about her makeup line, Lime Crime, living in a homeless shelter and the controversy which set

    the blogosphere alight.

    Interview

You may not have heard of her yet but its only a matter of time before Doe Deere (real name Xenia Vorotova) and more importantly her fledgling makeup brand, Lime Crime begin to pop up on your radar. This New York fashionista has had her fingers in several creative pies for years but has now decided to try her hand at the hard to crack beauty biz. Her hard work is already proving fruitful with exposure on MTVs Buzzworthy, an article in Nylon and Nylon TV coming to video her home, The Unicorn House. A self confessed Unicorn Queen, it hasnt always been glitter and sparkle for Doe. A Russian immigrant who moved to the US with her mother and sister to live with her mothers abusive boyfriend, they eventually ended up in a homeless shelter. With the help of those around them, they overcame adversity and Doe is now a successful entrepreneur. Oh, and there were the accusations which sent the blogosphere on fire and caused Doe to threaten legal action and make a defensive YouTube Video. No questions were off limits when Pretty talked to the one and only Doe Deere...

    Interview

Unicorns and anything magical inspires me..Anything glittery sparkling, fantastical makes me oh so very happy!

  • Pretty

Hey Doe ! Youve talked in the past about coming to America from Russia, how hard was the transition?

Obviously it was a huge move, how do you feel your life

experience - from growing up in Russia, to living in a homeless shelter in the States affected

    your outlook and work ethic?

On your blog you call yourself

the Unicorn Queen! Why a Unicorn over another mythical

    creature?

But youve previously mentioned that you identify as a goth, how do you manage to fit this

in with the light and sweetness

of Candyfuture!? (Does current inspiration is a movement she

    calls Candy future)

    You just mentioned Glee and

    whether on your blogazine or

with Lime Crime, you cite Glee as something very important to

you - what is glee and why is it so special?

    As an entrepreneur who has

    followed many different paths

    - music, fashion etc why did you decide to make cosmetics your

    next challenge?

    Interview

  • Pretty

When youre feeling down, nothing can pick you up better than a touch of glitter or a stroke of bright blue lipstick.

  • Pretty

  • Pretty

Ive heard you created Lime Crime as you felt there was a

    niche in the market?

So how does Lime Crime differ

    from other makeup brands?

Whats the process like when youre coming up with ideas, be it for the colours or names

    of new products like the

    lipsticks?

In 2009, accusations started to appear on the internet that Lime

Crimes Eye Dusts were the same as wholesale mineral makeup

    companies and that Doe was

    simply repackaging and selling

them at a higher cost. Bloggers wrote long articles comparing

    swatches from Lime Crime and

    these other companies and

labelling Doe a scam artist,as well as listing other offences

    allegedly committed by Doe over

the years. In her defense she threatened legal action against

    those who were spreading

    defamatory comments and

    posted a controversial YouTube

video, defending Lime Crime and denouncing the haters.

Last year, there was some controversy about the line, which you decisively refuted,

    how did this affect you?

Why do you think some bloggers

    created such a frenzy about

    it?

    The most beautiful

    thing in the

    world is a

    peaceful

    and loving

    mind

  • Pretty Life can be pretty hectic and sometimes we all need to take a minute, sit down, cross our legs and chill out. We had a chat with Buddhist and ex Beauty PR Amy Lund about inner beauty and conflicts with her work in the beauty industry. So grab a cushion, take some deep

breaths and for the next few minutes, relax and reflect.

Ive been a Buddhist for almost 10 years. I took refuge which is a ceremony when you become Buddhist when I was 21. I wasnt born into the religion but my Mum discovered Buddhism when I was a child so I was familiar from a young age with the philosophy and with meditation. Its not an evangelical religion though so I found my own way to it. I was living in New York, working for a magazine having achieved so many of my dreams at a young age. Many people turn to religion at a low point in their lives but I turned to it at one of the best times of my life when I was seeking spiritual success, not just worldly

    success.

Ive worked in beauty since I was at school age 16 - my first job was behind the make-up counter in Boots. I continued to work in beauty retail through university. After university I worked for magazines before moving into health and beauty PR for five years, with clients including The Sanctuary Spa and The Sanctuary beauty range and GHD styling irons and haircare. A move back home to Yorkshire led to a return to journalism and I now specialise

    in health and beauty writing.

Buddhism is about individual choice and I choose to be vegetarian. I have turned down a PR job promoting a beauty brand which is known for conducting animal tests. However, this is a personal choice and my own interpretation of Buddhism which teaches us to

    respect animals.

Buddhism emphasises inner beauty through creating virtuous minds of love and patience. The teachings say that these positive minds karmically result in beauty (although this is not the main motivation for cultivating positive minds - the main motivation is more altrusitic!). Buddhists are encouraged to embrace beauty by making beautiful offerings and visualising beautiful things as offerings. Buddhism gives guidelines rather than strict rules and these

are more about what you do with your mind and your motivation.

Buddhism helps me to balance myself and Ive discovered that true peace comes within, rather than seeking it from material objects. However, beauty is not to be shunned but embraced and offered. The most beautiful thing in the world is a peaceful and loving

mind. This can radiate on anyones face.
