El Pretérito:*is a past tense (“-ed”) *talks about what happened

is a completed action *action repeated specific

number of times

*action that has a clear beginning

and/or ending

In order to conjugate in preterite tense, you will use the same system as present

tense:

Tomar—in present we keep the stem which is TOM

Then we add the appropriate endingEX Present: Tomar(yo)= TomoEX Preterite: Tomar(yo)= Tomé

Pretérito endings for -ar verbs are:

Yo—é Nosotros—amos

Tú—aste

Él—ó Ellos—aron

Pretérito endings for –er / -ir verbs are:

Yo—í Nosotros--imos

Tú—iste

Él—ió Ellos--ieron

REMEMBER:

In Preterite tense ER/IR verbs in the nostros form carry the same ending unlike present tense. Present tense er=emos & ir=imos, but in preterite

tense, both er & ir verbs=imos
