Vale - Stirling Moss 1929 - 2020. From my time as a small boy, Stirling Moss

was a motor racing hero. His inspiring successes with Mercedes-Benz, in the historic drive in the 1955 Mille Miglia, averaging 160 kmph for 1000 miles! - on public roads, his joint successes with Juan Manual Fangio, among others. He drove the following - Cooper, Jaguar, BRM, Maserati , Vanwall , Aston Martin, Lister Jaguar, Ferrari and Lotus, among others. I observed him at close quarters at the Goodwood Revival and Motor Classica in Melbourne. - a consummate driver and an articulate public relations performer and outstanding ambassador for motor racing. He was so well regarded by so many. We may not see his like again. Ed.

Remembering Stirling Moss (1929 – 2020) Photo: SPORTSCARDIGESTCOM

TRIBUTE - Sir Stirling Moss, Mr Goodwood April 21, 2020 VELOCE Story and photos by Jonathan Sharp. “Who do you think you are, Stirling Moss?”

was an oft-used phrase by British Bobbies when pulling over speeding motorists in the mid-

twentieth century. So well-known in fact, that Renault used the line during the 1970s for a Renault 20 television advertisement. If I recall correctly, the scene starts with the Renault stopped on a country road with a Bobby on a bicycle next to the car. The driver’s front window then comes down electrically, and the Bobby looks at the driver in the car whilst saying the immortal line. As the camera pulls away, we see Stirling Moss at the wheel.

Moss having the last laugh…

Moss Goodwood, 2012. Moss added his presence to Goodwood’s two vintage events, the Festival of Speed and the Revival, for many years. He was eventually known as “Mr Goodwood,” and there I got to meet and speak to Moss on many occasions. He was often called ‘Stig Mo’ by my friends, due to how he signed his autograph.

Moss at the wheel of the W196, Goodwood, 2014. A true gentleman, Moss was always approachable and happy to answer any questions you may have had about his career or the cars he drove. I am genuinely sad today, Easter Sunday, at the passing of such a legend and a British national treasure. Rest in peace ‘Stig Mo.’ I send my heartfelt condolences to his wife, family and friends.

Hi Brendan. Attached are some photos from a club run we had to Lake Wendoree where we met up with the Ballarat club. I think it was about 25 years ago, but not quite sure. Some of our older members may have a better idea of when. II hope you are well and enjoying these awkward times. Cheers, Graham Sharpley

An array of interesting makes in the Ballarat Autumn. - Thanks Graham.

..................................................................................................................... The following was kindly supplied by Ian Wilson - BSCCC member. I recall c.1962 visiting Pulfer Motors, Bendigo, to view this game-changing car. I also recall in 1974 having access to a FIAT 128 driving around Spain - which , like so many cars since have been inspired by this ground-breaking design and mechanical packaging by Alec Issigonis. Ian has a Mini, which he restored and uses often in club events.

Any colour, as long as it’s NOT black!

In 1929 the Ford Motor Company Down Under decided that the Model A colour schemes were a trifle dull and drab, and in order to get in line with modern trends, needed some “jazzing up.”

So the company approached three well-known Aussie artists to recommend some updated, modern colour schemes for the Model A range of passenger cars. Below are the six colour combinations that were finally accepted by Ford of Australia.

Note the Fordor sedan with Fallow Field Brown fenders, rather than the standard black! Whether or not Henry Ford’s approval was sought or given in this matter, is not known.

These colour combinations were unique to Australia. Model A aficionados will also note the hybrid model, the Sports Roadster – another unique (non-USA) version, introduced by Ford of Canada in August 1929.

Standard equipment included, folding windshield with nickel-plated brass brackets, dust cover for folded top, fender mount spare wheel and tyre, luggage rack, full bumper on rear in place of bumperettes, wind wings and dickey seat. Special colours included Mount Vernon Green, Nankeen Brown and Henna Red. Mouldings and rear deck were finished in black, with double striping of Cameo Cream.

VISIT to VOLKSWAGEN AUTOSTADT, WOLFSBURG

GERMANY. 19.4.2006 Wolfsburg, Germany - BRENDAN O'DONOGHUE.

Arrived Hanover from Madrid 10.30pm last night. Great hotel, everything spot on - fabulous breakfast everything A-Z. Only had what I needed. Great attention to detail in everything. Travelled by very quick electric train to Wolfsburg this morning. Another great hotel - spot on - owned by VW. They certainly, "have ways". So, I have arrived at the main part of my tour - Spain, Switzerland being bookends. Travel is by train from Northern Germany to Zwickau, Ingolstadt, Munich and Stuttgart, with stopovers to Switzerland - using a Eurail Pass - followed by a visit to the Schlumph Museum in Alsace, France, -visiting auto museums and factories.

Middle Europe is the cradle of the motor car, as this was where in Germany; Karl Benz built his first Patentwagen in 1886. Not far away, in isolation, Gottlieb Daimler was doing much the same thing. Many great engineers and makers hail from Germany, Austria and Bohemia. In 1900, Vienna could claim to be the cultural capital of the world, with the Austri0 - Hungarian Empire reflecting the wealth and sophistication accumulated over 660 years of European domination. The vast Austrian Empire led in the fields of education and science and had massive armaments factories (Steyr and Skoda), which formed the basis of an advanced industrial country.

Prior to WW1, Austria produced several high quality and mechanically advanced makes such as, Graf and Stift, Laurin and Klement, Nesselsdorf, Austro Daimler, Puch and Steryr Other Notables: Austrians / Bohemians: Edmund Rumpler, Robert Eberan-Eberhorst, Ferdinand Porsche, Hans Ledwinka Germans: Nicolaus Otto, Karl Benz, Gottleib / Paul Daimler, Wilhelm Maybach, Rudolf Diesel, August Horch.

Arrived at Autostadt Woflsburg (VW Group) at about 11am and am still here at 7.30pm. Everything is here - good food places and I am using free Internet. It's all done so well, but from a car enthusiast's perspective, it's an excellent theme park.

The Zeit Haus (Time House) deals with cars from the first Benz in 1886 to contemporary times, with fabulous representations by a number of subsequent makers. Some restorations and reproductions are exquisite. I nearly died and went to heaven, when I walked into this area and there displayed was a reproduction of a Porsche designed 1936 Type C Auto Union. There were heaps of other very interesting cars from the past.

This reproduction was built by Crosthwaithe and Gardiner in the UK.

Original Auto Union V16 - August Horch Museum Zwickau, Germany. (I was later to see an Auto Union C Type with original chassis, etc., but with reproduction body at the Deutsches Museum in Munich, along with an original at Audi in Ingolstadt).

Volkswagen Werk / Mittel Canal Wolfsburg. Wikipedia Photo. VW dominates the town - the factory area is said to exceed that of Monaco, they own the hotel I'm staying at and there is the Volkswagen Bank, a VW soccer stadium and a VW soccer team. Everyone I have come across today has been so helpful - I guess they are properly trained to be professional in whatever they do - all very impressive. Tomorrow, I will hit the proper VW Museum and am booked into a factory tour (English) at 12.45pm Prices so far don't seem too bad - after Spain - I’ll know more after a few days. Am travelling really well - must be the stimulation.

Autostadt Wolfsburg. 20.4.2006 Wolfsburg Enjoyed yesterday at Autostadt. There are individual pavilions for VW, Audi, SEAT, Skoda, Bentley and Lamborghini - all part of the VW Group. Each building has its own style and little cost has been spared to make a statement.

A highlight of the Volkswagen Pavilion was seeing and photographing the VW Eos, which is due for release in June 2006. The Eos is a convertible-coupe with a five-piece folding roof, largely based on VW Golf mechanicals. This is one of the few C/Cs that looks well proportioned and integrated in design. The first four brands share many components- engines, platforms, suspensions, etc. So except for a bit of finessing or extra equipment, a VW Golf, Skoda Octavia, Audi A3 or one of the lesser SEATs are essentially the same. Passat - Audi A4, etc. Smoke and mirrors! The Bentley uses a version of the W12 engine from the VW luxo Phaeton and possibly in some Lamborghinis - these two however, are substantially different than the rest. Today I visited the VW Museum in a non-descript building in a similar part of town - some very interesting stuff there. It really needs updating in presentation and location, in order to give VW the recognition it deserves - not only as a brand, but in the context of what the VW beetle and what the brand means not only to Wolfsburg, but to the "economic miracle" which occurred in Germany in the 1950s and 60s, largely on the back of the beetle and its derivatives.

VW Based Romtech 1959. I later took a factory tour about 50 minutes - very interesting - the automation is incredible - the infrastructure is just as amazing as what was happening on the production line. No photos unfortunately!

If you could dream up your ultimate ute, what would it look like? With the end of production for Ford and Holden now firmly in history, so too is our beloved ute. The team at Budget Direct Car Insurance have put together some computer-generated images so at least
