Fatim Mazmouz SUPER OUM Les Identités culturelles EXHIBITION > 25 MAY TO 25 JUNE 2016 OPENING Thursday 26 MAY 6pm “The body is a marvellous medium” Fatima Mazmouz was born in 1974 in Casablanca, Morocco, she lives and works in France and Morocco.

“My work is closely tied to my life. But it’s not only autobiographic; it’s an expression vector. I understand my body as being performative, The body speaks with its means, and I translate it into artistic projects that transcend my own experience, to try to reach the universal ; If some people consider my work provocative, “it’s because of the nudity” I think that provocation only makes sense if it sparks a debate “Some people see courage in showing up naked. For me, courage is to take the step of confronting oneself and bringing out what’s left.”

“Thebody is a marvellous medium,”Mazmouz performs as a political actor using her body as means to stimulate reactions, “especially in societies where belonging to a collective system doesn’t allow the enjoyment of our own body. Your body doesn’t belong to you anymore … It remains primarily locked in religious considerations.

Of multiple cultures and indentities, she portraits herself draped in three flags. “For my parents, I was too westernized. for the others, too folkloric, the Arab, the oriental…

In her series «Mères patries» and Behind the idea of the mother, there’s the idea of motherland, she says. «And it’s a suffering, because I’m Moroccan, Berber and French all at once. It’s a civil war inside of oneself .”

“It’s better to have ownership of the fantasies we are the objects, If I have to be the marionette of all that, and politics in particular, I can also take the square root of my body and exploit it to make it say my own truths. And the only thing left is the ability to distance yourself.” >Fatima Mazmouz She displayed her works in prestigious places : Roma, Madrid, Amsterdam, Anvers, Paris and Cairo, in 2005, 6ème Rencontres Africaines de la photographie de Bamako, in 2006, Festival International de la Photographie de Arles, in 2009 at Paris-Photo, In 2015 at the l’Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris and in 2016 at la biennale de Dakar.
