EARTH DAY IN THE PARK & ARBOR DAY TREE GIVEAWAY

TO PROVIDE AN ARRAY OF ACTIVITIES

WINTER PARK, Fla., an internationally recognized ICMA Excellence Award

winner with accredited fire, police and parks & recreation agencies (April 16, 2013) – The City of Winter Park and Rollins College present “Earth Day in the Park & Arbor Day Tree Giveaway” Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Central Park. Winter Park Mayor Kenneth W. Bradley will address attendees and Green School Grant winners at 10:30 a.m. from the main stage. Founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970, Earth Day is designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the earth’s environment. Winter Park’s celebration will showcase how the City of Winter Park and Rollins College are working to make Winter Park more sustainable. Attendees will learn how the city is working toward achieving the Florida Green Building Coalition’s Green Local Government Platinum certification; an effort spearheaded by the Keep Winter Park Beautiful & Sustainable Advisory Board. “Earth Day in the Park” will provide educational workshops focused on learning about native landscaping, how to fish, and grow organic food. Music will be provided by The Legendary JC’s. Additional music and a live broadcast will be provided by WPRK, the radio station of Rollins College. The city’s Urban Forestry Management Division will have certified arborists in attendance to answer questions and give away an assortment of 3-gallon containerized trees for city residents to plant at home (proof of city residency will be requested). A rope course will be available for anyone willing to try their hand at ascending and descending a tree. The event will feature large, interactive public art displays constructed with recycled materials and designed by organizations including “ArtReach Orlando” and “Misty Forest Academy.” A number of cardboard costume parades hosted by the extremely popular “Dog Powered Robot” will also be included. To promote creative and sustainable transportation modes KWPB will co-host a free bike valet service with the Pedestrian & Bicycle Advisory Board. Visitors to downtown Winter Park will be able to check their bike free of charge at Garfield Avenue behind the main stage in Central Park. A fleet of rickshaws will also be on hand to taxi people to the Winter Park Farmers’ Market and the 3rd annual Hannibal Square Heritage Center Folk Art and Craft Festival.
