Press release FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 11 February, 2019 DR. SCOTT HAMILTON OFFICIALLY NOMINATED AS NDP CANDIDATE IN CAMBRIDGE CAMBRIDGE – The Cambridge NDP have held their federal nomination meeting and chosen Dr. Scott Hamilton to be their candidate for next October's 2019 federal election. On Saturday 09 February, members of Cambridge's New Democratic Party packed Wesley United Church in Galt and elected Hamilton to represent the federal riding of Cambridge, North Dumfries, and North Brant. "This was one of the most exciting nomination contests we've seen in years," said Mike Farnan, President of the Cambridge NDP Riding Association. "The atmosphere was electric, standing-room only, with an unprecedented turnout of voting members. The candidates were outstanding. What a fantastic day." After speeches from candidates Hamilton, Jagtar Shergill, and Kemesha Alli, Hamilton was elected on the first ballot. "I'm honoured to have the trust of the New Democrats of Cambridge," Hamilton said. "There are so many new members here today, from all age groups, walks of life, and parts of the riding, it reminds me that the NDP is a party for everyone, and that we all want to make real progress. Cambridge is ready for something new, and we’re ready to take a stand in the House of Commons on the issues facing us. We’re going to develop a better national strategy on opioids, poverty, and housing. We’re going to heal our fracturing education and health systems, and we’re going to address precarious employment and climate change.” In his nomination speech, Hamilton spoke about his family history and the variety of jobs he worked before returning to university as a mature student. But it was his desire for a productive non-partisan political dialogue and a vision of a united Cambridge that electrified the crowd. "Let's be good to one another. In the end, we're all friends, neighbours, and Canadians," said Hamilton. Those who voted for Scott said that his warmth, his listening skills, his education at Oxford University and the London School of Economics (LSE), and his experience researching and teaching local and international politics, won them over. Cambridge City Councillor Pam Wolf (Ward 5) echoed this. "I was very proud to nominate Scott [as the NDP candidate]. His intelligence, values, passion, and charm make him the candidate who can win this riding," Wolf said. Lee Sperduti, who was also attending the event, summed up the day: "I believe Scott has the drive to change the political landscape in Cambridge North Dumfries for the better," Sperduti said. "I'm excited for what the future will bring."

The two other candidates, Jagtar Shergill and Kemesha Alli, both have longstanding ties to the region and social justice issues. Shergill’s speech stressed his experience in politics and his commitment to the NDP, as well as to fair and equitable business practices. Alli, a former Crown Ward who now runs PATCHES 360, an organization helping teens transition out of care, emphasized the need to bring together grassroots, faith-based, and other community groups to address issues facing the riding. "These three amazing candidates are a sign of things to come for the NDP," Farnan said. "Scott represents what Cambridge needs now: a young, local guy, with a young family and a good head on his shoulders. He'll fight to safeguard this community going forth." Hamilton will now prepare for his campaign’s official launch later in March.
