The easiest access to the Alpes-Maritimes ski resorts is from the coast. This is an important point in favour of the destination French Riviera!

Stylish clients will fi nd the most prestigious ski equipment brand (Moncler) in Cannes. Moncler opened its new shop last spring at 14, La Croise e. Transfers are arranged to allow clients to be on the snow-covered slopes of the Alpes-Maritimes ski resorts in less than 30 minutes. In the evening, everyone can be back in the most prestigious hotels on the coast – hotels that make the French Riviera famous.

Adult beginners can take advantage of free initiation off ers at Auron and Isola 2000 to learn about snow sports without charge thanks to the collaboration of the resorts and the ESF (French Ski School). They can then use around 100 blue and green runs to explore the resorts and their amazing scenery!

Family clients will fi nd options where classes and activities are organized especially for children in 15 ski resorts and Nordic areas.

"Adventurers" can experience the most extreme activities in the heart of the “Parc National du Mercantour” or the “Parc Naturel Régional desPré-Alpes d’Azur”: constructing igloos, ice falls, paragliding...

Sea view! Finally, the feature that sets the Alpes-Maritimes ski resorts apart is the fact that, on a fi ne day, skiers can see the sea from three of our resorts: Valberg – Isola 2000 and Gréolières-Les-Neiges!

Find out all about the Destination French Riviera -The Mountains in this press kit!

Have a good read!

Isola 2000 has 120 km of runs between 1800 and 2610 m above sea level; its skiable area is 80% covered by artifi cial snow.

A LITTLE HISTORY

Isola 2000 was inaugurated in 1972.The project was mooted in 1947, a er the Second World War, due to the existence of the Italian military route which linked Isola with Vinadio via the Col de la Lombarde on the new border. The adventure began when an Englishman discovered the beauties of Chastillon and decided to establish a winter sports’ resort there. The idea gained ground until 1964, when the local council adopted the idea of creating a winter sports’ resort.

SKI AREA

● 120 km of ski runs43 runs - 4 black, 11 red, 21 blue and 7 green.20 ski li s – 2 cable cars, 10 ski tows, 7 chairli s and 1 funicular.1 hillside dam: 150 000m3.430 snow cannons – area covered: 120 hectares.

SNOWPARK "TONY’S SNOWLAND" AT ISOLA 2000Named a er the bronze medallist at the Vancouver Olympic Games, this snowpark is entertaining and aesthetic. The area is unique in terms of identity and visibility as it has been moved to the centre of the ski area.Modules are available for all levels: half-pipe / Slopestyle / Big air / Zone de jib / Beginners area.On the Moufl on run, Boardercross is the focus for a great many National and European competitions and lends itself to intense and entertaining boarding moments.

"BIOPARK" – a natural snowparkA bio-park is a snowpark located in a natural environment, in the trees, with wooden obstacles. The course consists of 8 wooden modules hidden in the forest. Over 140 m long with 12 modules and 3500m².2 areas for beginners and experienced riders. In addition, information panels give riders technical advice and environmental information linked to totems in the form of large sculptures in wood of animals living on the site (chamois, marmots, wolves, tetras, frogs...).

BACK TO BACK: THE SNOW CLUB WITH THEMOST MEDALS IN FRANCE:Back to Back was set up in 1991, in Nice, by a group of friends who had a passion in common which, at the time, was more a way of life than a sport.Initially an association for board sports in general, it later specialized in snowboarding. Good riders appeared quickly and, thanks to the club, they were able to travel to competitions and win a great number of medals. The nucleus of the precursors of snowboarding met up at Isola 2000. It’s there that snowboarding started and the fi rst snowparks made their appearance.

In 1994, the Club set up an Alpine section, allowing it to become the largest snowboarding club in France. In the course of time, Back to Back has numbered snowboarding directors among its members as well as several of the early national and international champions including Tony Ramoin who fi nished 3rd in the fi nal at Vancouver 2010 (event: snowboardcross).

The organization has become more professional and members follow many training courses (Judges, Monitors, Technical Directors) allowing it to organize regional and national competitions, including the French Championships in 1995 and 1996, and to develop this new board sport. Isola 2000 is, today, a benchmark resort in the snowboarding world.> www.back-to-back.fr

AURONTECHNOLOGY AND AUTHENTICITY> www.auron.com

A village resort, Auron has the largest ski area in the department with 135 km of ski runs. It combines pleasure and technology. The central village square, with shops, boutiques and bars, is the meeting point for skiers.

A LITTLE HISTORY

In the Old Provencal language, Aura means air and wind. Without doubt, the name Auron comes from the light breeze which blows almost all the time on the plateau. For centuries, the Auron plateau was used for cultivation and grazing by the inhabitants of Saint-Étienne-de-Tinée.At the beginning of the 20th Century, the only "foreigners" to come here were soldiers on manoeuvres and a few skiers. It was not until 1931 that a road suitable for motor vehicles linked Saint-Étienne and Auron. At that time, two large resorts began to install cable cars - Megève, in France and Sestrières, in Italy.Inspired by this example, the Alpes-Maritimes "Conseil Général" decided to fi nance the same equipment in Beuil-Valberg and Auron. In 1934, Auron hosted its fi rst skiing competition. Its fi rst cable car (the third in France) was inaugurated on 30 January 1937. It transported 25 people at the amazing speed of 2 metres per second! In 1938, Auron was host for the 27th French Championships but the war put the resort into such a deep sleep that it did not really wake up until thirty years later. From 1960 onwards, the clientele tripled but the equipment did not keep pace. The opening of nearby Isola 2000 in 1971 led to Auron’s revival. This rebirth was so spectacular and well thought out that, since 1979, the resort has hosted the French men’s and women’s Alpine ski Championships three times. The resort has celebrated 70 years of skiing and today boasts 135 km of runs.

VALBERGFAMILY RESORT,KIDS PARADISE! > www.valberg.com

For a long time, Valberg has had two main development priorities: to put families fi rst and follow a sustainable development policy in the resort. This village, with its buildings of wood and stone, is located on the doorstep of the Mercantour, 1700 m above sea level. Its snow runs vary from 1500 to 2011 m in altitude.

A LITTLE HISTORY: THE CRADLE OF SKIING IN THE ALPES-MARITIMES

From 1909 onwards, le Chevalier Victor de Cessole began to discover the winter potential of Beuil. In 1910, the Alpes-Maritimes ski club held its fi rst sporting competition and the resort organized speed andcross-country races, jumping, freestyle and even tobogganing competitions. On 9 March 1930, Beuil inaugurated the ski jump at Launes. Competitors jumped from 30 to 50 m.In 1931 and 1932, the Chamonix-Beuil long-distance trek crossed the Alps by the high passes in just over 10 days.On 21 February 1937, a new Olympic ski-jumping record of 58 m was set.Today, the ski runs at Beuil form an entity with those of Valberg. The Beuil/Valberg ski area extends over more than 130 km of Alpine and Nordic ski runs. In parallel, Beuil groups together all its Nordic skiing activities at the Launes centre. Activities include cross-country skiing, orienteering, ski touring and snowshoeing. Organisers of the EuropeanSki-Jumping Championships in 1996 and equipped with a ski school, the resort organizes the annual "Grand Prix de ski de Beuil".

THE VALBERG PLANETARY TRAILExceptional and unique in Europe. From the heart of the village, walkers set off on the path of the planets and discover the solar system reproduced on a scale of 1/1,000,000 in the Valberg ski area(1 m = 1 million kilometres in space).Grandiose, monolithic works resembling Land Art are set out along a snowshoeing path and a snowy track for ramblers; several educational, contemplative or relaxing stopping places, still on the theme of astronomy.A multi-media GPS guide is available on request. The app. can be downloaded free on Appstore.Open all year.

SPECIAL HIKE LEAVING FROM THE RESORTFor experienced sportsmen and women.Leaving from the resort equipped with skis or snowshoes, it is possible to climb the breathtaking ridge of Mont Mounier following ancestral paths and contemplate the grandiose panoramic views.Mont Mounier is located in the Alpine chain in the Mercantour Massif. The name of the mountain literally means "Black Mountain".Made up of layers of black marl, the mountain can be recognized easily by its isolated position and long ridge. On the la er and a kilometre west of the summit, is a secondary summit, "Le Petit Mounier" (2,727 m). In 1893, an observatory was built there by Raphaël Bischoff sheim, founder of the Nice Observatory. Twice destroyed by fi re and rebuilt, it was also used as a CAF (French climbing club) refuge from 1927 to 1940 and then abandoned because of the climatic conditions.Only the ruins can still be seen.Because of rocky ridges, Mounier is only accessible by following the ridge from "Le Col de Crouse e" (2,480 m) on the GR 5 route. One fi rst reaches Le Petit Mounier, then the summit by an aerial path. The panoramic view of the region, and in clear weather of an area from Corsica to the Swiss Alps, is exceptional!

"You go into a church built around 1000 A.D. by the Benedictine monks from Pedona Abbey, Borgo San Dalmazzo".Constructed on a basilica plan, the church originally had only a central crypt. The crypts on the north and south were not added until around 1100-1150, when the priory received the distinguished Sainte-Croix relic. The church therefore took the name "église dédiée à l’Invention de la Sainte-Croix" (church dedicated to the fi nding of the true cross). At that time situated in the centre of the Saint-Dalmas priory, only one religious building remains today. It was restored Century. The building as we know it today, listed in 1943, is marked by two important architectural periods - First Romanesque and Baroque."

ALPHA, THE MERCANTOUR WOLF PARKAlpha, the Mercantour wolf park, came into being through a desire to acquaint the general public with all aspects of the age-old confrontation of wolves and Man. However, “Alpha” – the international name for the dominant couple in a wolf pack – is not just another reserve of wolves in captivity. It is an animal park in a grandiose se ing with staging which is so original that it is unlike any other in the world.First of all, the visitor watches three Scénovisions®, each lasting around 20 minutes. They are shown in the magnifi cent se ing of the renovated former cowsheds. These shows highlight various people, shepherds, scientists and forest wardens, whose work brings them into contact with wolves, albeit for very diff erent reasons.Accompanied by one of these people, an animal behaviour specialist, visitors are taken to an “initiation” area and then to meet the wolves in another part of the park.> www.alpha-loup.com

30 31HANDISKI, SKIING FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

Since 2001, the Alpes-Maritimes Conseil Général has been promoting the Handiski plan of action, allow people with disabilities to practice this sport in optimal conditions of safety and comfort.

The Conseil Général has acquired 8 tandem skis, at a cost of €42,000 (Auron, Isola 2000, La Colmiane and Valberg), a dual ski and a kart ski, intended for the use of people with disabilities, free of charge. On 25 February 2011, the Conseil Général bought a 9th tandem ski (€5590).

To handle them, an operator’s licence is essential and so the Department fi nances a 9-day training course each year, open to volunteers and professionals, who become qualifi ed operators (cost €10,000 per session of the training course).

Nearly 50 operators trained in 4 years and around 500 benefi ciaries in2009/2010.
