EDIToRIALHistoric, popular and poetic “Val” gets adopted by everyone using its unique character to unleash the most fabulous legends. Vincent Jay is the perfect example. The Vancouver Olympic biathlon champion talks to us about the instant feeling of well-being. He’s just settled in as the new manager of the prestigious Sports Club.

Here you are in Val d’Isère, Happy?Very happy indeed ! It is an amazing resort. I am touched and honoured by the warm welcome of the “Avalins”. My life is here now and my wife and I are signing up for a life project in this resort.

The legend of Val d’Isère, does it mean anything to you?I am the kind of person who likes to move forward. I am lucky to be accompanied by my team, several volunteers and locals full of energy and ready to raise the profile of our resort. I am open to all ideas and suggestions, and will listen to what they have to say. The door of our Sports Club is open. Together we will write the legend.

You put your skis on, where are you taking us? I don’t know the ski area perfectly yet but I had the chance to climb La Pointe du Gros Caval as part of my ski instructor diploma. So at least I know this off-piste run and will soon get to know the rest of one of the most beautiful skiing areas in the world.

The Face of Bellevarde, scary?Of course it is legendary. I wouldn’t dare tackling it with a pair of cross-country skis.

VAL D’ISèRE myThIcAL ALPS

1 850 m above sea level… Snow stretching to the horizon, mountains touching the sky, clean air, a sea of clouds, instant well-being. Val d’Isère guarantees sharing, excellence and emotions. The seemingly unreachable northern Alps and all their magic are within easy reach here. The majestic mountains of Val d’Isère attract holiday-makers from all over the world. All are charmed by this small but irresistible village nestled in the valley at an altitude of 1850 and covered in snow from November to May. Underneath its ancient aspect, stone walls and lauze roofs this typical destination of Savoy became modern very quickly

by promoting the art of living and hosting in the mountains until it was highly rated internationally. More high-end accommodation with six 5 star hotels, development of a wellness zone with the creation of an Aqua sports Centre in the heart of the resort, cocooning and treatments offered in all accommodation, gastronomy enhanced by Michelin-starred chefs, partnerships with top-level athletes… The latest one to have fallen under its spell is none other than Vincent Jay the Vancouver Biathlon Olympic champion, who recently took over the management of the resort’s prestigious Sports Club.

If the magic of the snow can cover all tracks, the champions’ achievements on the slopes of Val d’Isère have left their mark on the world of winter sports. A promising future for this young man from Val d’Isère. He left such a deep impression that the legendary ski area of Val d’Isère and Tignes is named after him. Finally, it is Val d’Isère which sets the pace at the start of every winter season. The “Critérium de la Première Neige” marks the beginning of the winter season with the world’s alpine skiing elite attending.

Le Yule*****, Val d’isère’s new 5 star hotel

Ski in-ski out is the main feature of this new design hotel ideally located at the foot of the slopes. Le Yule***** has 41 south-facing rooms with outstanding views across the pistes and a sun-kissed brasserie Le Schuss! We also like quiet evenings by the fireplace.Bar lounge, wellness zone (3 private treatment rooms, hammam and 2 saunas), ski shop, games room, cinema room and 2 conference rooms with flexible seating arrangements.

Hotel Le Samovar*** (being classified ****) gets a new look

Recently equipped with an amazing wellness centre (pool spa, jacuzzi, hammam, sauna and massage area) this charming hotel with 19 rooms located in La Daille at the foot of the slopes, gets upgraded this winter: a new mineral spa, a new bar lounge , a new huge terrace for all rooms on the 1st floor! Le Samovar also proposes six chalets for rent by the week.

Le Savoie***** plays with volume

The luxury rooms offer extra comfort with their own lounge area. The restaurant invites you to enjoy stunning views over the legendary Face de Bellevarde thanks to its veranda providing a pleasant hot-cold feeling...The bar has also expanded.

Le Kandahar***, Best for authenticity

Built in 1960, Le Kandahar was completely renovated in 1994, extended in 2001 and 2014. Located in the heart of the village it perpetuates the traditions of Savoy’s architecture, wood and stone being the dominant features. We like to relax in the spa, the hammam or sauna rooms after a day of skiing on the slopes of the Bellevarde or Solaise mountains nearby. The hotel welcomes you in its Tavern d’Alsace for festive and flavoured meals. This winter, Le Kandahar will add five new rooms, mainly family rooms for 3 or 4 people and is currently undertaking the renovation of all the communal areas (reception desk, fireside area, breakfast lounge, lounge bar, TV room and the 300m2 meeting room).

Les Chalets du Jardin Alpin, so traditional!

Comprising of three chalets built in the traditional style with stones and lauze roofs this residence is situated in the district of Legettaz at the foot of the Solaise Massif: ski-in and ski-out! The apartments as well as the communal areas have been rethought to offer more space and services such as a spa with sauna and hammam, bigger living-rooms, modern and functional kitchens, while keeping the cosy atmosphere of traditional mountain cottages...

Les Barmes de l’ours*****, prowess on the piano

This winter, this large authentic hotel/chalet has decided to celebrate French gastronomy with new Chef Alain Lamaison and his team, who will take you behind the scene of their kitchen with their cookery classes. Les Barmes de l’Ours has three restaurants that will satisfy all tastes: fine cuisine in Michelin-starred La Table de l’Ours boosting regional products, gourmet tradition in La Rôtisserie, local specialities in Le Coin Savoyard.

On the accommodation front the focus is on well-being and comfort. This winter, we will once more enjoy restorative sleep! With the new hotel Le Yule***** Val d’Isère now has 6 five star hotels, each of them combining design, colours and textures in line with their own personality.

VAL D’ISèRE ThE GREEN ERA

Carbon Footprint assessment, National Charter for sustainable development tourism, ISO 14 001 certification for the local ski lift company (STVI), Val d’Isère Cable Car Company and the Alpine World Skiing Championships Organising Committee, eco-friendly initiatives… For many years Val d’Isère has been actively participating in the protection of this exceptional environment, which provides a living for the resort the whole year around.

9

Page 10: PRESS KIT - at.media.france.frat.media.france.fr/sites/default/files/document... · at the start of every winter season. The “Critérium de la Première Neige” marks the beginning

In the last century one single donkey track winding dangerously through gorges was the only way for the residents of Val d’Isère to travel to Bourg Saint Maurice and sell their local specialities: lace and cheese. Huddled around its bell tower Val d’Isère enjoyed the typical life of the other Savoyard villages, shrouded in snow for eight months of the year. Its residents, known at that time as “Winter Swallows” gradually emigrated to the valley until winter sports holidays became fashionable.

From that moment, everything happened very quickly... From 1930, Val d’Isère was considered as one of the best destinations for skiing thanks to long months of snow and good slope exposure. Then, in 1937 French President Albert Lebrun opened the Iseran mountain pass.

Finally, it was the determination of Charles Diebold and Jacques Mouflier, who from 1929 invested all their time and effort to make Val d’Isère one of the top winter sports resorts in the world today. Charles

Diebold opened the first ski school in 1932 and at the same time Jacques Mouflier built the first ski lift the Rogoney, which is still used today by beginners. In 1932 there were 4 hotels, and more than 62 in 1966. Created in 1938, the Val d’Isère ski lift company (STVI) launched the first (illegal) construction of the Solaise cable car, which was completed two years later. Then work started on the Bellevarde cable car in 1945.

After this success all Val d’Isère needed was fame. Henri Oreiller, Jean-Claude Killy, Marielle and Christine Goitschel, Mathieu Bozzetto and Ingrid Jacquemod, all contributed to the international reputation enjoyed by Val d’Isère today.

Val d’Isère continues to evolve and expand to this day while protecting its cultural heritage and historical centre. The architecture remains firmly traditional, the services and hospitality improve every year and each generation strives to maintain Val d’Isère’s top position among the world winter sports resorts.

THE SPIRIT OF THE PIONEERS

The soul of Val d’Isère lies right here in its alleys. Wood, stone and lauze make up the decor. We’ve gone back to the olden days, we reenergize. In the Moris house (1662) we discover a life of the past, harsh and slower under the snow… This helps understand the strength and modesty of the mountain, inherited by the residents to make Val d’Isère what it is today: an open-minded resort, proud of its past and connected to the future.

Page 11: PRESS KIT - at.media.france.frat.media.france.fr/sites/default/files/document... · at the start of every winter season. The “Critérium de la Première Neige” marks the beginning

In Val d’Isère impressions abound and points of view succeed one another… Teenagers, seniors, stars or champions, we are all heros. Not surprising given that top-level competition is firmly engraved in Val d’Isère’s sporting genetics.

Generations of champions grew up and learnt to ski in Val d’Isère: Henri Oreiller, Jean-Claude Killy, Marielle and Christine Goitschel, etc. More recently, Patrice Bianchi, Mathieu Bozzetto and Ingrid Jacquemod represented Val d’Isère in top-level international racing. And the younger generation among which alpine skiers Anémone Marmottan, Hugo and Romane Geraci, Alexandre Bouillot but also freestyle riders Tom Lesuire, César Reversade, Léo Taillefer is ready to take over.

in the tracks of herosIf the Critérium de la 1ère neige rapidly became a key event on the great white racing circuit (it’s been organised since 1955), other major world skiing events organised in Val d’Isère have marked the history of skiing including the 1992 Winter Olympic Games and 2009 World Alpine Skiing Championships.

What to say about the Bellevarde Face, the Oreiller-Killy (known to friends as the OK) or the Rhône-Alpes slope on Solaise? These legendary racecourses, famous the world over, are breathtaking for both racers and spectators alike. Racers plunge at high speeds towards the village to the sound of the cheering crowds. And there is a good reason, spectators have a stunning view over the entire racecourse. It is a thrill which stretches much further than the mountains of Haute-Tarentaise.

artisans of the legendIf the catering industry is so prominent in Val d’Isère, it is certainly because the mountain is very inspriring and stimulates both the mind and the palate. From the teashop to the Michelin-starred restaurant, the chefs and pastry chefs promote the art of enjoying the mountain. And they even give you the opportunity to learn to cook; we could not be more satisfied!

Chef Benoit Vidal at the Atelier d’Ed-mond *

Originally from Perpignan, this Michelin-starred chef has moved up the ladder very quickly and his reputation is well established. His cuisine, a successful mix of modern and traditional, plays with flavours finding inspiration in the surrounding nature. The 3 Michelin-starred chef Régis Marcon, introduced Benoit Vidal to the Atelier d’Edmond. It was love at first sight: This restaurant situated in Le Fornet offers a unique and warm decor combining the style of a mountain refuge and a workshop in a chalet hand built by owner Jacques Leprivey. Shorlty after taking over the kitchen the talented chef was awarded a Michelin star. His exceptional and inventive menu, which blends high end gastronomy with traditional local cuisine, has stunned more than one. The Atelier d’Edmond is also open during the summer.

Cooking workshop

Every month in winter from January 2015 Benoit Vidal organises cooking classes followed by a tasting in the Gourmet Bistrot (located in the establishment) at lunch time! On Wednesdays: January 14th, February 11th, March 12th and April 15th. The shop offers jams, homemade pâtés and terrines.

12

Alain Lamaison at the Table de l’Ours*

The resort earned its first Michelin Star thanks to him! After collecting his stars in Paris then in Baux de Provence, this highly creative chef arrived in Val d’Isère in 2004 working for the Table de l’Ours at Les Barmes de l’Ours***** hotel. His cuisine is based on the product, which in Val d’Isère enhances savours of the Tarentaise valley. Les Barmes de l’Ours has three restaurants: fine cuisine in Michelin-starred La Table de l’Ours, gourmet traditions in La Rôtisserie, local specialities in Le Coin Savoyard.

Go behind the scenes with cookery classes

For the first time ever, Chef Alain Lamaison and his team will take you behind the scenes of the Barmes de l’Ours kitchen with their cookery classes and share with you the art of gastronomy.
