Every new-build captain will remember his or her first big project. For Captain Nick James, this came in the form of Benettis 37m Dyna-R. Captain James joined the project in 2013 for her final four months in the yard, and has been with the yacht and owner ever since a far step from his role as project manager of a 60ft sailing yacht eight years ago. Sitting on the bridge of Dyna-R, Captain James talks to me about the build with passion met with frustration a combination soon to be understood as he reveals the intricacies of joining the project four months prior to launch, a first charter 78 hours after delivery and finding the time to be a family man during a build.
Its been a tough two years, from joining the project to a good few seasons of back-to-back charters, but theres no doubt that Captain James loves this boat. It was great to be involved in the build. I built the boat and I have a lot of invested emotion in the boat. I properly love her. Its a year and
a half of my life that Ill never get back; being away from my family, driving back to Viareggio every Sunday night. If I didnt feel passionate about this boat, it would have been a waste of my life, he tells me.Building the boat has been the hardest thing Ive ever done. If somebody came to me tomorrow and offered me the position of build captain on a 55m dream boat, Id say no thank you. In two years time, yes. But I want to enjoy being a captain for a couple of years just doing what I know, driving the boat and having my team.
In the yard youre fighting every day and its really stressful, explains Captain James. It doesnt matter if its a Benetti or a Feadship. Kathleen Anns captain left
BUILDINGA LEGACYA new build can be a dream for some and a nightmare for others. Or, in this case, it can be both. Captain Nick James speaks to Lulu Trask on board M/Y Dyna-R and recollects the build, splitting his time between the build and his family, the shipyard politics and how each and every frustration made the whole process all the more worth it.

her he built the boat and was on it for four years; hes now in England having the summer off [at the time of the interview]. I dont know what the stats are, but the fall-out rate for build captains is something like 50 per cent. Its the general stress.
Anyone in charge of any aspect of a superyacht, whether a department on board or a department in the shipyard, will need a strong will and a voice that will be heard. The consequence, within a shipyard, can be an environment of frustrations and conflicts particularly when a captain joins who, in most cases, will have been used to being at the top of the ladder while on board. Captains are control freaks. We inherently control everything. Its the whole, This is my world and Im the lord of my world mentality, explains Captain James. In the shipyard you dont have the control you want. In my life there are only two people above me my boss and my wife. But in the shipyard youve got to manage all of these people. Im a people person and I dont like conflict. I want everybody to be happy, and to build a boat you have to have conflict every day, because you cant just accept things. Yes isnt the right answer it should be, No, we can do better.
Captain James has two children and one benefit of a family man taking on the role of a build captain is the chance to be land-based for some time. However, with this comes the acknowledgement that shipyards, in most cases, are in relatively industrial areas unlikely to be home for many a somewhat bittersweet aspect of the role of a build captain. Im a complete optimist, so every Sunday Id put my kids to bed, Id kiss them goodnight, then on Sunday night Id drive down in my car so I was at Viareggio for eight oclock Monday morning, saying, Its a new week, were going to achieve something. Then by 12 oclock on Monday Id be completely frustrated, wondering why I was even there. Every week it was the same thing.
These frustrations, which arent seemingly specific to this build but in many cases to the general new-build environment, only add to the satisfaction and pride of a completed project. My wife said shed never seen me so happy. Ive got opinions, Im vocal, Im animated. On Sunday nights it was never, I cant be bothered to go to work. I was going there and I was ready for the battle. I was going to achieve; we were going to launch a new boat and weve launched a wonderful boat. It was good and I enjoyed it, but it was really hard.
One factor that kept Captain James going was a commitment to the owner of Dyna-R, who hes been with for more than two years, and a shared passion between captain and owner. Im a family man, and this boat has been built for the owners family. His last boat was called Dyna [a combination of the owners, his wifes and childrens initials] and they had a third son so they added the R. The boat is for the kids and his wife, and my kids and wife are welcome on board too.
Captains are control freaks. In the shipyard
you dont have the control you want.

And, to answer the question of many, this is the reason behind the yachts iconic font a feature the captain speaks of with restrained admiration. Every day its Is this the Disney boat? Who owns it? But the whole thing was done for his kids. If the owner was a big party guy I couldnt do it, because I dont have a vested interest in it. But I have a vested interest in this concept. I have to live with the name and the font, but Im very proud. Everybody knows that I built this boat, so its nice to be associated with it.

LIFEAT THE TOPCollectively, Italy dominates the Global Order Book rankings in
terms of total meterage delivered last year. But can this momentum
be maintained in the future? During the Monaco Yacht Show,
TSR spoke with the directors of two of the countrys premier
shipyards, Benetti and Perini Navi, about their market strategies for
2015 and beyond.

The Superyacht REPORTBenetti and Perini Navi
Benetti has consistently claimed the top slot each year as the worlds leading superyacht builder in terms of total LOA delivered, while its standing in the future will only be reinforced if the recent announcement of two new 100m-plus projects (in addition to the 90m approaching completion) is a sign of things to come. Perini Navi can still claim to have more super sailing yachts over 40m on the water than any other brand and last year saw the deliveries of both 73m M/Y Grace E and 60m S/Y Perseus3.
In an effort to be more competitive within the international market, both brands have undergone recent changes in top management. Last March, Perini Navi announced a restructuring that promoted Burak Akgl to the comprehensive post of managing director of sales, marketing & design, and Vanni Marchini of Picchiotti to managing director of operations. At the start of this year, Enrico DellArtino was also appointed CEO of the Perini Navi Group following the resignation of Giancarlo Ragnetti for personal reasons. Most recently, Fabio Boschi, was appointed chairman of the board of directors after being CEO of Perini Navis holding company Faper Group since 2009.
Last September, Fabio Ermetto left his position as CEO of Fraser Yachts to take up a new role as CCO of Benetti. Previously director of sales & marketing at Heesen Yachts, Ermetto had returned to Azimut-Benetti, (where he began his career as a project manager) as president of the Groups Yachtique division. His former role at Fraser was filled by Roberto Giorgi, honorary president of V. Ships, which acquired the brokerage house in partnership with Azimut-Benetti in 2004.
Despite strong historic performances, Benetti and Perini have suffered their fair share of setbacks in the last 12 months. As part of its restructuring programme, Benetti made drastic
cuts to its marketing department in Viareggio and, bizarrely, reported two fires at its Livorno facility. Perini Navi has not had a new order since the third in its 60m series was commissioned last May, while delivery of the 73m Picchiotti-Vitruvius Grace E was delayed by several months due to setbacks during commissioning.
With these developments in mind, TSR sat down to talk with Benettis Fabio Ermetto and Vincenzo Poerio, CEO of its megayacht division, and Burak Akgl of Perini Navi.

Maintaining the Benetti identity while
introducing new customised solutions is
not an easy compromise, but we know our clients very well and the most important thing is to ensure they go away
satisfied. Vincenzo Poerio
FABIO ERMETTO & VINCENZO POERIO
Fabio, you spent just a year and a half as CEO of Fraser what did you achieve in that time?Fabio Ermetto: We established a mid-term strategy designed to take advantage of the fact that Fraser is a truly international brokerage house in terms of both culture and locations. It was born in San Diego, acquired by the French, then the Italians, and finally Benetti in partnership with V. Ship and further expanded into other strategic markets, such as Singapore and Sydney. I was also keen to develop our other services, such as charter, yacht and project management. These fall more under the skill-sets of our partner V. Ship and Alberto Giorgi is well placed to take the company forward. Last but not least, I wanted to expand the in-house culture with new brokers, such as Alex Krykanyuk, Filippo Rossi and Craig Erickson.
What is your remit as CCO of Benetti?Fabio Ermetto: There are various challenges ahead, all of them associated with the fact that the market is slowly recovering, while the two new contracts for 100m-plus projects call for a new product strategy. We are very experienced at building up to 70m and weve learned a lot with the 90m currently in build, but over 100m requires more in the way of process management and internal reorganisation. In the past with the 55 to 65m platforms, the focus was on rapid delivery times of what were effectively semi-custom yachts, but the market has developed with fewer orders and clients who expect more customisation, whatever the size of the yacht. This means that we have to work on what will be our future style in a branding exercise that started with 65m Nataly, which broke away from the traditional Benetti look. The challenge is to evolve our brand identity without
alienating existing clients, many of who come to us precisely because of the family feeling of our products. To determine what our yachts will look like in five or 10 years time, we have to start thinking about it now.
Does this mean you will be focusing future production at the larger end of the scale?Fabio Ermetto: We hope to build more yachts of 100m and beyond, but without shifting the companys centre of gravity. Our composite Class range, for example, is very stable and were working on new models. Moreover, we have to be careful not to leave a gap between 50m and 70m, as some of our clients upgrade from a Class to a custom yacht in steel and aluminium, while others may want to go down in size. I believe the market for yachts of around 50m and sub-500gt will continue to grow in the near future. Again, its not so much a question of growing in size as increasing in customisation.
-
ISSUE 160 53
The Superyacht REPORT Benetti and Perini Navi
Vincenzo Poerio: Were close to full capacity with 15 yachts currently in build or on the water, including the two 100m-plus projects that are about to start. All except one of these have been sold and we have also confirmed investment in two new sheds of 140m in Livorno. [Since Monaco, Benettis tally of yachts due to launch in 2015 has grown to 19: seven are custom projects over 50m and the remainder are semi-custom units in its Class range.] To maintain production cycles across the Benetti range, we aim to sell around 15 yachts each year, three or four of which are in steel and aluminium. At Benetti [as opposed to Azimut] sales have been fairly constant and we didnt have a disastrous period during the recession. Over the past five years, for example, 1,200 negotiations have resulted in the sale of 115 yachts. These include those that we might take in part exchange, but it still represents a success rate of 11 per cent.
Apart from the management restructuring, what other adjustments are being made to meet the new market conditions?Vincenzo Poerio: Like other yacht builders, we have to think globally. Roughly 20 per cent of our sales are still in Europe and North America, but 17 per cent is now in Central and South America; another 17 per cent in the Middle East, Turkey and Egypt; 10 per cent in the former Soviet Union; three per cent in Africa, and the rest in Asia. There is definitely demand for increased customisation, but most of our clients come to us because they know and like the Benetti brand and look. Maintaining that identity while introducing new customised solutions is not an easy compromise, but we know our clients very well and the most important thing is to ensure they go away satisfied.
BURAK AKGL
Burak, were here aboard Perseus3, a huge achievement for Perini in terms of sailing technology. How representative is this yacht of the companys future direction?Burak Akgl: Weve definitely concentrated a great deal on re-establishing our belief in innovation perhaps more so for ourselves than from the markets perspective with regard to control and the equipment itself, which allow the boat to perform safely and efficiently in all conditions. For example, weve really gone back to the drawing board with the captive reel
winches, furlers and electronics, which have undergone a lot of development. A year ago with Seahawk we thought wed made quite an important change, but Perseus3 represents the way forward with her electric variable speed sheet winches and sail furlers, which are faster and avoid the loss of efficiency in switching between electrical and hydraulic systems. These are being developed still further aboard the 70m ketch Sybaris and were also working on yet another new generation of winch for the sistership of P2, which will be ready for next summer. So theres a lot going on right now. >>
Were looking into hybrid management, not just with regard to generation but
also using battery packs for energy storage and peak/trough shaving to optimise
function and consumption. Burak Akgl
-
54 ISSUE 160
The Superyacht REPORTBenetti and Perini Navi
How does Grace E fit into this strategy?Burak Akgl: For us Grace E ticks a lot of boxes. She represents what we set out to do in the first place with the Vitruvius series, which was to build something different; we had no intention of competing with other yards producing more run-of-the-mill motoryachts. The whole concept began with Exuma and snowballed into two more orders before we even had the first in the water. Since then weve been penalised by the market in general, but also arguably because they were both niche products and Exuma and Galileo G disappeared over the horizon into the Pacific never to be seen again! Now Galileo G is back
in the Med, but Exuma is still in south-east Asia doing what she was designed to do. Grace E is a step beyond the explorer concept when you look at her superficially, but her design, naval architecture and function meet the same criteria. Her owner wanted to be closer to the water and I think in that sense the yacht does an incredible job. We could have made life much easier for ourselves by adding another 20cm to the deck heights for a more prominent profile, but we drew on our sailing yacht experience to hone down as much we could between deck heights. To be perfectly candid, we suffered enormously in order to execute the specifications required, especially with regard to installing the 8m-long Azipod control panels.
Whats next for Perini Navi?Burak Akgl: One of the most important elements from a technological perspective is the electrical systems. The generation, distribution and management of electrical power has enormous impact on a vessels function, both with regard to the amount and weight of cabling installed and from a user-friendly perspective. So with 70m Sybaris weve started a process whereby the cable routing has been rationalised with a different approach to electrical distribution. Upstream from that, were also looking into hybrid management, not just with regard to generation but also using battery packs for energy storage and
peak/trough shaving, along with permanent magnet electric motors and variable speed generators to optimise function and consumption.
Id like to think that Grace E illustrates to a certain clientele that they can do something different and it would be great if that brought them to Picchiotti, even for Vitruvius projects with more traditional propulsion systems. There are all manner of layout variations available and, coming down in size, we also have a 50m package that is an evolution of Exuma [the model was on display at MYS], which may appeal more than the original yacht. On the sailing side, Seahawk was a yacht that could perform in earnest, but Perseus3 represents another step as a 500gt vessel with lots of entertainment space that focuses even more on serious sailing with one of the largest and most complex rig and sail inventories ever assembled.
We like to build yachts that are different. That probably means were not as competitive as other yards when it comes to bidding on other projects, but we will continue to do things the Perini way. J

The Superyacht REPORTAzimut Benetti YachtMaster
0$67(5,1*7+(,668(67+$70$77(5
Will Mathieson reports on this years Azimut Benetti YachtMaster, which, despite being dampened by a sodden golf course, was not deterred from the
seriousness of the 10 workshop discussions.
The 15th edition of the Azimut Benetti YachtMaster event took place at the Terme di Saturnia Spa & Golf Resort in southern Tuscany during the first week of February, with the worlds most prolific yacht builder hosting a fleet of captains for its annual client homage.
This years edition was dogged by torrential rain, which curtailed the pursuit of captains traditional second love, golf. Unfortunately, the championship course was out of bounds and this meant the fun activities, which have traditionally comprised the lions share of any YachtMaster, had to be revised and moved indoors. However, the disappointing weather actually brought out the most in the hotels most distinctive feature: its naturally occurring thermal spa, which, despite the wind and rain, provided sanctuary for the captains who had filled the hotel to capacity.
While the faade of spa treatments and golf lessons is a very pleasant one, this annual convergence of captains serves a very important purpose for a group that has built its unrivalled market share on a solid platform of repeat business. The superyacht industry as a whole places captains on a pedestal, knowing that they are a rare breed within our sphere that owners happily defer to; they are seen as the most direct route to the end user. Azimut Benetti courts its clients to ensure that the yard-captain relationship remains a long and happy one. This year was no different, and it is clear from the number of individuals who return year after year, schedule permitting, that the builder holds a special place in their bosses affections.
What was a departure from previous editions, though, was the heavy emphasis placed on education. Rather than running riot, captains were subject to a busy schedule, comprising interviews conducted by attendant journalists and a series of workshops. It appears that this slant towards seriousness was a shrewd move because the educational element was very well attended. While there has always been a platform for sponsors to present their products and services, this years event was distinct in that the subjects for discussion were driven by demand.

The Superyacht REPORT Azimut Benetti YachtMaster
It seems this years YachtMaster reflected the ongoing evolution of an industry that is aware of the challenges that lie ahead. It is fair to say the superyacht business has been sluggish in adjusting to constrained market conditions, but in the last 12 months there has been a palpable change, which weve noted at The Superyacht Groups own events, and must have been felt by Azimut Benettis own organisation. The industry is feeling the pressure and the savvy professionals are keen to equip themselves with as much knowledge and expertise as possible to insulate themselves from the worst of the market contraction.
Ten workshops were staged over two days to discuss five topics, all of which were impeccably attended. The subjects had been chosen based on popularity prior to the event and consisted of MLC 2006, the impact of ever-larger yachts on management, Paris MoU and its impact on port state control, fiscal issues, and current regulatory developments at the IMO.
It is a credit to Azimut Benetti for forcing the issue, and to the captains who spent two afternoons debating, discussing and dissecting these pertinent topics. The series of interviews that supplemented the workshops brought four current Benetti client representatives to the stage to discuss the unique elements of their relationship with the group.
The Superyacht Report had the opportunity to interview Captain Luca Mosca, who skippers 56m Annaeva. As TSR discovered, Mosca is a second-generation Benetti captain who grew up on board 47m Ilham (now Gulnev) and earned his sea legs under the tutelage of his father.

The Superyacht REPORTAzimut Benetti YachtMaster
Although Mosca acknowledged that yacht captaincy had changed significantly over the years, with the role far more challenging today, he feels Azimut Benetti stands apart in its provision of support and after-sales service. We all know how demanding it is to be a captain of a superyacht, he explained. New problems arise every day, both from the management and the operational side, and ISM, planned maintenance and human resources management are all activities that require time and commitment.
I have to say that in Benetti I have always found a reliable partner [and] this service has been improved in [recent] years Even years after the delivery of a boat, with warranties clearly expired, they have been ready to offer their precious support at short notice.
Perhaps the highlight of the interview series was a comprehensive overview of the progress of Benettis largest ever project, FB 272, from owners representative and project manager Andy North. At over 100m, and being built
to PYC specifications, this eagerly anticipated project represents a new era for the Italian builder and, as such, North had the crowd on tenterhooks for the duration of his talk.
Benettis CEO Vincenzo Poerio has himself said the vessel is worth four 60m superyachts and, in line with Moscas comments about after-sales care, North revealed the yard has guaranteed a five-year warranty on the vessel, which drew murmurs of impressed surprise from the crowd. The 4,500gt vessel is, he confirmed, still on course to hit the water in 2018.
While the YachtMaster event has long been an astute tactical ploy to curry favour with captains, this years event married enjoyment with insight and education, a coupling that should be welcomed by an industry that is coming to terms with its need to professionalise.
If todays captains are happy to learn about the esoteric rules and regulations that govern their vessels, while at the same time providing the rest of the industry with vital analysis of its performance, everyone stands to be better off. From the evidence of the workshops staged at YachtMaster, the demand is undoubtedly there from all sides, which ultimately bodes well. J

The Superyacht REPORTBrokerage News
The close of 2014 has been widely reported as one of the most successful since pre-2008. As a result, brokers are maintaining a healthy dose of optimism and the market is hoping that this trend continues as we make headway into 2015. With the global-economy levelling out and providing a more stable footing for buyers, new clients are able to take their time when it comes to purchasing their yacht, with the days of fire sales behind us. The more stable economy and available inventory meant clients remained active and willing to buy as soon as they found a yacht to suit their requirements, commented Harry Bristow-Holmes, brokerage director at Sunseeker.
As more inventory is picked up off the market, shipyards are beginning to see new orders being placed as clients are unable to find what theyre looking for in the re-sale market. Thom Conboy, broker at BYS, said that Brokerage in 2014 was one of our best years since 2007, but were starting to see a lack of good
quality inventory. As a result, I think new build will start to see a major up-tick. Good news surely for the shipyards as they were some of the hardest hit in the industry during the GFC as orders fell by the wayside. Following some impressive sales last year, including 88m Illusion, and working more with the Asian market, Jan Jaap Minnema of Fraser Yachts is careful not to get too ahead of the market. While 2014 exceeded all my expectations, at the end of the day, it is still a conservative market, with displacement yachts remaining the most popular, he said.
However, many brokers are still confident that the new build market will see the greatest growth this year. There was an overwhelming consensus at the close of 2014 that clients were struggling to find their perfect yacht: Sales will continue to steadily increase and new construction will take a leading role as buyers struggle to find the yacht they are looking for, commented Kevin Merrigan, CEO at Northrop & Johnson.
Chris Cecil-Wright of the eponymously named firm was seeing similar activity from his clients. In fact, most of the designers I know are frantically busy, mostly drawing yachts over 70m for some of the top shipyards, he commented. J

YOU KNOW THE SAYINGTHE ROAD IS LONG, WITH MANY A WINDING TURN. Oh, and lets not forget the bumps, too. But when said road culminates at the doors of the Spa Boutique Terme di Saturnia in Tuscany, famous for its thermal springs, it just might be worth the two-hour trek from Rome. While the hot springs sulfurous eau de parfum might be slightly overwhelming when you first step inside the hotel, the nose grows accustomed to it soon enough and we had ample evidence that the captains found the waters rejuvenating.
The Azimut-Benetti Yachtmaster kicked off this years event in Saturnia, Tuscany, from February 46. For its 15th year, it took a slightly new turn with its mix of entertain-ment and education, adding two new events to the roster. One put the media, including Dockwalk, in the interviewers seat to shine the spotlight on the captains perspective, or
in my case, on the owners representative, for insight into their experiences during all project phases. Andrew North discussed Benettis Project Zaza, its Passenger Yacht Code vessel scheduled for delivery in 2018, including the challenges of his role and the build during the interactive session. After-ward, the attending captains dispersed for
their choice of six workshops, the second new concept. Each workshop was led by a moderator with a deeper focus on various topics, including upcoming IMO regula-tions, port state control, the MLC, VAT in Europe, hiring crew and more, in a smaller, more hands-on setting.
But before the serious stuff started each day, there was fun to be had, as the par-ticipating captains were divided into three teams (red, white and green) for the morn-ings activities: building the perfect marina (with Lego), crafting a (floating) vessel from cardboard and testing out their (almost non-existent) golf skills at the driving range.

enjoyed playing with Lego. We crafted a fan-tastic marina with all the amenities a captain could dream of: marina office with helipad, fuel dock, Travelift, mobile crane, ISPS secu-rity, paint shed, bar, crew gym, high-speed Internet access, airport shuttle, P&M semi-submersible vessel, tennis court with covered stand, pool and environmental waste dis-posal with 10-meters depth throughout (and yes, there were berths). But, alas, ours was not the winning design, and the Red team ultimately was crowned the victor.
Our next attempt at a win was at the driving range. You know what they say about captains and golf that they have all that time on their hands to hone their
golf games? Well, that really wasnt evi-dent. Shockingly, the White teams fortu-itously landed all the talented golfers, and both White team A and B claimed victory.
From the golf, it was all down to the captains design and building skills in the cardboard boat-building contest. While cardboard might not be coming to a yard near you anytime soon as a prized mate-rial, all teams designs managed to stay afloat until they were unceremoniously ripped apart by their opponents. Even so, it was an impressive show of design skills (and tape) all round.
Apart from the fun and games, any Ital-ian event is known for its fabulous food
and drink. This was no exception. From the themed Roma Caput Mundi dinner under the stars alongside the thermal spa yes, that was a Roman Centurion in line for the buffet to the choreographed per-fection of the last supper that ended with the bang of fireworks, the food left noth-ing to be desired. The fireworks were spec-tacular, as were the synchronized swim-mers who put on quite a show in the hot springs. Before the evening was lost to the dance party, partygoers set paper lanterns off to blaze in the night sky for quite the spectacular scene. Were looking forward to seeing how Azimut-Benetti manages to top this event next year. DW

Illusion V is a young family's relaxed and stylish home at sea
13 March 2015 by Risa Merl
Pitted travertine walls, coconut furniture, leather roses, even a stingray staircase feature inthe unique aesthetic of the 58 metre Benetti superyacht Illusion V. Yet thanks to designersTina Green and Pietro Mingarelli, she is a relaxed home for a young family as well as astatement of style.
When we first step aboard Illusion V, Lady Tina Green is about to burst with excitement: Imlike a child. I just want to jump up and down, she says, ushering us proudly around theyacht. Illusion V was designed inside and out by Tina Green and her business partner PietroMingarelli and the pair had spent the last two weeks camped in a chase boat at BenettisLivorno facility, urging the build along to make sure everything was completed in time for theshow.
Illusion V is designed for comfortable living at sea
You should have seen her two weeks ago there was still so much work to do, Tina Greensays, buzzing. Everyone said it couldnt be done. Im tempted to suggest we sit for a whileand take it easy in one of the comfortable lounges on board, but this is Monaco and we haveto hustle. And anyway, Lady G, as shes affectionately known, is in no mood for sitting. Letsgo, she says. You have to see this!
Illusion Vs experienced owner has an enviable track record, having started out with a coupleof Mangustas a 72 and 92 before he switched yards with an ISA 120. So far, so sporty. But when he started a family, he thought about going bigger because space on board hadbecome a priority. He found it on his last boat, also called Illusion, a half-built 45.6 metreBenetti that Green & Mingarelli Design (G&M) adapted before its launch in 2010. He boughtthat boat halfway through its build, so it wasnt 100 per cent us, Tina Green says. This, sheadds, sweeping an arm around the spacious main deck saloon, is 100 per cent us.
Illusion V's rose theme and details
The exterior style is a fusion. Theres some Bali in there, as seen with the use of coconut andmother of pearl on the external furniture, a hint of ancient Rome in the copious use oftravertine and even some Thai, evident in the pen shell ornaments and wooden Buddhas. Butthe central theme the symbol most prevalent is the simple rose. Whether embossed, engraved or embroidered the motif is unavoidable, with details of the flower evident ineverything from cushions to carpets, walls to windows.

The rose is a central theme seen in myriad details in Illusion V
The owner saw what Pietro and I have done with Lalique Maison, and how we had used therose motif, explains Lady Tina Green, and he liked it so much he wanted us to make it themajor theme on his boat. As well as working on yachts and houses, Green and Mingarellialso design and produce a collection of furniture and accessories that make up the lifestylearm of Lalique, most famous for its glass and crystals. No fewer than 480 crystals are usedon Illusion V, in the floor, ceilings and walls all carrying the rose.
Youd think the design might become repetitive but the duo have cleverly avoided monotonyby playing with the shape as much as possible. For example, cushions are covered inscattered petals, while the staircase features leather walls embossed with the full three-dimensional beaded flowers. Its like this on all Lady Tina Greens yachts: they start with asingle theme, whether a flower or, in the case of a 65 metre she designed recently, anantique woodcarving picked off the floor of a market in northern Thailand.
Comfortable living at sea
The other thing that strikes you about her designs, particularly Illusion V, is how comfortablethey are, probably a consequence of Tina Green living on a yacht up to six months a year. Thanks to this lifestyle, she knows what works and what doesnt. Small wonder clients trusther judgement.

The comfortable saloon aboard Benetti superyacht Illusion V
Its a measure of this clients confidence in Green and Mingarelli that he didnt visit the yardonce during the build. I saw the boat for the first time this weekend, he tells me. They didan amazing job. When my wife and I met with the designers originally, we told them how wewanted the yacht to feel. I didnt want lounges where you were too scared to sit on the sofa,I wanted to feel at home. They managed to pull it all together plus our requests for certaincolours and a certain vibe casual and relaxed.
Its a superyacht and supposed to be luxury and high-end, but were quite young with ayoung family and dont want anyone to feel like they cant go anywhere [on board].
A great example of this comfort max ethos is the TV area leading into the main-deck mastersuite. Usually this would be a study or an office, but that would just be wasted space, theowner felt. Nowadays youve got laptops, iPads, your phone. The world we live in doesntrequire you to sit for hours on end behind a desk with a computer on it. So we turned it into aroom we might actually use; where the kids can come in in the morning and jump on the sofaand watch TV. So theyre in the owners area, but, you know, not on your bed!

The cinema on Illusion V
Guests get treated well, too, since it was important that Illusion V had a successful chartercareer. The big VIP cabin is on the lower deck, occupying the full beam of the boat and hasthe only bathroom outside the owners with the full white-onyx treatment. Four roomy guestcabins sit in front of it: two doubles and two twins (the twins could almost be doubles, sowide are the beds). Discreet but voluminous storage is in all cabins: One thing were veryknown for is our hidden cupboards, Tina Green says.
All the requisite A/V is tucked neatly away in the guest suites. You need your big media, youwant your remotes to do everything, you want enough plugs to charge your phones, youwant your Apple TV, the owner tells me. Its all got to be there but you dont want it in yourface. Unless, that is, you do. The spiral staircase leads to another area that will have thecharter market frothing: a cinema room with sofas so deep theyre writing poetry.
Designed for entertaining
The upper deck is where the after-dinner action will take place. Theres an option to turn thearea into another large cinema space, with a big screen that rises out of a sideboard, although people are more likely to cluster around the bar one of five on board.
The upper deck on Illusion V is designed for entertaining
There are a lot of bars, the owner admits. That doesnt make me an alcoholic it tells astory. Bars are a focal point and on my last Illusion we didnt have as many. You know, this ismy house when Im on it and I love to mix my own drinks. I dont want to be waited onconstantly and its great to be able to go behind the bar and just grab a drink.
If the party ends in the upper deck lounge, it starts up top. The sundeck of Illusion V isspectacular, offering clear uninterrupted views from the rear sunloungers to the raisedforedeck spa pool. Better still, its all on a single level and incredibly versatile. In the middleof the deck is a dining area that seats 12. Clear doors fore and aft can be opened or closeddepending on the wind, making this a year-round, all-weather dining space. Forward isanother bar, panelled in matt coconut and embellished with travertine while the chairs infront of it, also made from coconut, are highly lacquered with mother of pearl inlays, for thatfeeling of luxury, explains Tina Green. As with all the external spaces, the plants up hereoffer a contrast to the warm beige palette and give life to the decks.

The spa tub on the upper deck of Illusion V surrounded by comfortable sun pads
However, none of this cosmetic detail makes it onto the foredeck, which has been left clear.Ive never understood why people use that space right in front of the bridge for sunbathing. Why do you want to lie in front of the crew? the owner asks. Its also nice for the crew tohave a spot to go and grab fresh air. But if we wanted to use it for a barbecue in the eveningswe can do that, or put some mats, even equipment, out for morning exercise, or set up apaddling pool for the kids. Its a massive, open, transformable area, not a fixed space thatbecomes totally non-versatile.
Attention to materials
The textures and materials throughout the yacht are something of a G&M speciality. All theexterior dining chairs are made of coconut and mother of pearl, with chenille fabrics, forinstance. No one else is doing this, she says. We made coconut sophisticated! All theloose exterior furniture was made in Bali, and Green and Mingarelli posted their own expertsthere to lacquer it. Elsewhere, parchment goat skin to the uninitiated is used to givedepth and texture to coffee tables, including the enormous one in the main deck saloon whileshagreen (stingray skin) is used on the upper deck side tables, coffee table and panellings onsome of the fixed furniture.

The master on Illusion V
Tina and Pietro have been all over the world finding this stuff, the owner says. The skill isthat they dont go and buy out of a catalogue. I go on some boats and I can tell you wheremost of the furniture comes from: the same catalogues, the same places. [G&M] build, buyand create specific products that youll never see anywhere other than on the yacht theyreworking on. Its nice to be unique.
Stable and quiet performance
This focus on design is fine so long as the boat works. The owner admits he is highly sensitiveto movement and noise: Honestly, Id rather be on land! So its important the boat isincredibly stable and quiet. When I got on board yesterday, I said to the captain the boat waslisting two degrees to the right. He came back and said, Yep, its listing two degrees to theright. Weve had lots of people working with Benetti to make sure the boat runs smoothly, quietly and with no vibrations. All these technical things have been completed to a differentstandard than before.

And I dont want to hear generators. We can sit at anchor in Greece for two months withoutgoing into a port, with the generators running constantly. So any vibration or noise, or smokeor smell was something that I wanted Benetti to concentrate on specifically. We managed toget the generators built on special blocks, so that we shouldnt be able to hear or feel them atall.
With the boat sitting at the show, its hard for me to gauge how successful Benetti has beenin this regard, but following successful sea trials, it obviously went well, and she is nowheading off to the Caribbean, where the owner will join the boat with his family forThanksgiving. After that, shell head back to Europe for the Monaco Grand Prix. Thats theplan, anyway, the owner says, estimating he spends about three months a year on board.
Given that amount of boat-time, its understandable that he wants something supremelyquiet and supremely comfortable. We can confirm that at least the latter has been achieved and with aplomb. Love, passion and comfort is how Lady Tina Green sums up the boatwhen we ask her to provide a neat soundbite. When I tell this to the owner the next day, helaughs and confirms: Yeah, love lots of love. Its our home.
