Presidents’ Message On behalf of the York County and Lancaster Bar Associations and our charitable Bar Foundations, welcome to the inaugural War of the Roses Charity Softball Game. Thank you for stepping up to the plate and supporting this fun and family friendly event. Proceeds from today’s activities will support law-related programs that help the most vulnerablesuch as providing free legal services for the poor and programs to help people move from the criminal justice system to independence, saving lives and community dollars. We would also like to thank all of the players on the YCBA Batting Barristers and LBA Lancaster Lions, and especially our team Captains and Managers. There is a great deal of work that had to happen on the practice field and we are grateful for the time and energy you have devoted to making this event a success on the playing field today. No matter which team is ultimately victorious, today everyone is truly a winner!!

The mission of the Pennsylvania Bar Foundation, the charitable arm of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, is to increase the public’s understanding of the law and its appreciation of democracy and strive to ensure that citizens, particularly Pennsylvania ‘s most vulnerable, have full access to our legal system.

We believe in justice for all.

We accomplish our mission by making grants, thanks to the financial support from individuals and organizations both within and outside of the legal community, and encouraging bar members to donate their time, talent and expertise in service to the public.

We strive to level the playing field.

Funding from the PBF supports civic and educational programs designed to increase the public’s understanding of the law including Law Day and Minority Bar Law Day school programs, Celebrate the Constitution events, the annual High School Mock Trial competition, national “We the People” competition, as well as a variety of grants, scholarships and awards that promote equal access to justice.

Help us hit a home run.

Meet the 2017 Batting Barristers Meredith R. “Flash” Allie #0078 When Meredith is not in the courtroom displaying her full and complete knowledge of hearsay (despite that being a really stupid rule),

she spends her time learning about the hearsay rule. Meredith is also co-inventor, with Attorney Alexis Sipe, of the Objection Spinny Wheel which is perfect for those instances when she doesn’t feel it is best to object and then ask the court for his or her thought on the basis of same. Her softball career started in the mid-1980s, which is hard to believe given her extremely young appearance, and continued for approximately four years. She was a heck of a player despite being more concerned about whether the baby blue uniform matched her banana clip and layered tube socks. She is surely going to marginally contribute to bringing home the gold for the Batting Barristers. Kurt A. Blake #21 Manager Self-appointed manager and outstanding criminal defense attorney. Now no one can oppose his playing in the game, even though his client’s breathalyzer scores are higher than his batting average. Alissa C. Cardenas #4 Her first comment to Kurt (manager) after being told she made first cuts to be on the team was, “But I don’t know why we sing ‘Take me out to the ball game’ when we are already here.” Karen E. Comery #11 Karen "The Comet" Comery. She bats left-handed but thinks she's always right. She's a newlywed and this marriage will last...as long as her husband doesn't taste her cooking. Best known for her "take out" slide into a restaurant. She used to umpire but had to quit because she kept calling the batter "guilty" instead of "out." Angela A. “Angie” Edris #00 If her golf game is any indication, this is not going to be pretty. Evan M. Gabel #7 The team is hoping his batting skills are better than his Bar Stools singing! If not, the fans will be singing, “Take him out of the ball game.” Bernard Ilkhanoff #24 A real foodie, Bernie first tried out to be home plate umpire since he heard they got to “clean the plate.” After breaking his arm while playing tennis, he hopes his luck on the court won’t follow him to the softball diamond. Teresa K. Jauregui #17 Teresa “The Hulk” Jauregui (of Mexican/Basque heritage her last name is pronounced How-duh-guee) is a newcomer to the Batting Barristers scene. Teresa is an amateur Strongman athlete and holds the Pennsylvania state record for overhead log press. As with all strength-based athletes, she hates cardio. A lot. Having not touched a bat or engaged in team sports since she was in grade school, her inclusion on this team seems like a recipe for disaster, but who knows? Maybe running the bases will be easier than running with a 500 lb. yoke on her back. When she isn’t deadlifting cars, Teresa is a prosecutor with the Special Case Unit in the York County District Attorney’s Office. Scott E. Lineberry #18 As a hockey player, Scott received honorable mentions every year from 2004 to 2012 for being the worst wing in his league – a streak that was finally broken by forced retirement. He’s thrilled to trade in his hockey stick for a bat and bring that same frighteningly bad talent to the softball diamond. And as a public service, Scott will be offering free consultations after the game. Just kidding. Bring money.

Stephanie E. Lombardo # 3 Supremely confident because as an appellate attorney in the DA’s office she never loses cases, she was last heard saying “Let’s put the women and children of Lancaster to bed and go look for dinner.” Gregory E. “Greg” Martin #16 This old man of 58 thinks he still has the skills he had when he was in his 20s. This game should be a day of sad awakenings. Greg was a member of the original Batting Barristers in the mid 80s when current Judge Jeff Wright of Lancaster was known for making calls in the field even though his back was to the play. He is hoping that Judge Wright is on the Lancaster team again. The Honorable N. Christopher Menges #5 Captain Family law attorney of 39 years and judge since January 2016, Captain Menges is a ringer for the White Roseshe plays softball for his church team (in fact, is the oldest player in that league) and thinks that he is a great slow pitch pitcher (only in his own mind). He also played in the barristers vs doctors games in the 1990s and enjoys hiking, raising fruits and nuts on his 14 acres, hunting, his 6 grandchildren and, in general, doing all kinds of nerdy things including chasing the solar eclipse last month. We hope his eyesight wasn’t affected. Matthew Menges #42 You will notice that his father, the Honorable Christopher Menges, is also playing in today’s game. Matt attributes all of his talent to his father’s wise advice, including, “If at FIRST you don’t succeed, try second base.” Craig R. Milsten #20 Craig Milsten’s ball-playing career peaked in 1977 as an 8-year-old Little League All-Star and he’s basically been living off the fame ever since. Having last swung a bat in anger during the Lawyer-Doctor softball wars of the late-90s, Milsten’s primary goal in this contest is to not end the day at an Urgent Care facility. When he’s not knocking in runs or flashing the leather, Milsten is usually either riding his bike or representing plaintiffs as a personal injury lawyer at Katherman, Briggs & Greenberg. Charles R. “Chuck” Murphy #2 Chuck heads up the Special Case Unit of the District Attorney’s office which involves sex offenses. He will be the fellow in the stands handing out nude pictures of the Lancaster team obtained from seized computers. The Honorable Richard K. Renn #94 Judge Renn practiced and practiced to make the team. He even purchased a new pitching machine. Unfortunately, it beat him 5-1. Jennifer L. Russell #15 Trying to throw a fast pitch by Jen is like trying to sneak the sun past a rooster. Her concern is that Lancaster will be so bad, by the fifth inning the concession stand will be selling hot dogs to go. Patrick J. Schaeffer #23 Patrick Schaeffer is an avid baseball and softball player, having played baseball for about 10 years while growing up and softball for about the last 10 years as well. Patrick currently plays softball in a local church league and practices family and tax law at Trinity Law. Patrick’s primary goal for the game today is to avoid pulling a hamstring.

David C. Schanbacher #57 Dave is wearing his high school football jersey number and attempting to relive his glory days. We’re not saying that his knowledge and talent for the game is lacking, but when the manager told him he sucked, he actually grabbed a straw.

Alexis K. Sipe #13 Lady Luck…lucky 13! Lucky that her ever changing hair color and vibrant tattoo collection sets her apart from the rest of the bar because it certainly isn’t her knowledge or experience. Member of the Young Lawyers Section with her own kids born years before she was admitted to the bar, Alexis has been lucky enough to pick up a few practice tips from her brood with the record reflecting “hold on a sec” being one of the finest moments of her career. At the top of her list of luck is having found her best friend Meredith "Flash" AllieBatting Barristers teammate, confidante, and co-inventor of the Objection Spinny Wheel (patent pending). They're quite the pair and equally witty so as to mask their professional shortcomings. Suzanne S. Smith #8 Suzanne, aka “Thing 2”, is one of the members of the original Batting Barristers, when she was a lot younger. She is hoping to take home another trophy after winning the prestigious Women in the Law Killer Badminton tournament earlier this summer, despite suffering from an injury. Of course, Suzanne wanted to remind everyone that she is doing this for the camaraderie and because this is a great fundraising event NOT because she is competitive. Glenn J. Smith #9 For years, Glenn has been known to have bats in his belfry. He’s hoping that translates well to swinging one on the diamond. Otherwise, it’ll make for a long day, as softball is 90% mental and the other half is physical. Justin M. Talarowski #28 Justin got confused as to what a designated hitter was when he tried out for the team. He thought that after the seventh inning, he would get to drive all the drunk fans home. Justin A. Tomevi #10 Justin aspires to one day be the Managing Associate at Barley Snyder . . . for now, aspires to not be the Batting Barrister’s bat boy. Justin practices in the area of commercial litigation. Jeremy D. Williams #32 Jeremy has graced us with his presence. Did you know Jeremy likes to look at himself? Even Narcissus thinks he’s a bit much. After the game he wants his number retired. That’s like putting a vice president on Mount Rushmore. God help us if his uniform gets dirty.

Thank You Fans!

Meet the 2017 Lancaster Lions Grace Nguyen Bond #007 Grace is a late blooming prospect for the LBA squad. After collecting her first ever hit last month, she is adjusting to having a career batting average. A lifelong resident of Lancaster County, she has agreed to extend her season this year to defend her native turf’s honor the only way she knows how…through sport. Grace is currently juggling the ever increasing demands on her softball talent with the demands of her career as a litigation and business attorney with Blakinger Thomas, and of course, her work with Her Majesty’s secret service.

The Honorable Leonard G. Brown III #7 Len's fondest memories of playing softball are from the early 90s when midnight summer games in Alaska allowed him to easily see the ball because of the abundant sunshine. Since then, the ball has become less easy to see regardless of the amount of light. Len is participating in the contest with hopes that he will not run into the outfield fence and break his glasses as he did in the last game he played in an LBA sanctioned league. But if that does happen again, he hopes to catch the ball. Mark Fetterman #88 Mark ‘The Rooster’ Fetterman is a prosecutor with the Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office. As evidenced by his nickname, Mark is aggressive both in the courtroom and on the field. He has been coaxed out of retirement by an empty promise of recapturing his late-1980’s glory days. Mark began his career in the York County Public Defender’s Office and is looking forward to battling old friends and colleagues. David Freedman #30 Seth Hiller #9 Seth is a business and real estate attorney at Blakinger Thomas, PC and the captain of their softball team. Formerly known for his gazelle-like running ability chasing down fly balls in the outfield, years of an American diet and a sedentary lifestyle have since limited his physical abilities. Tony Hopkins #77 Josh Knapp #20 Only twenty-five years ago, Josh was an all-star catcher for American Legion Post 250 (Kane, PA) who traded his MLB (pipe) dreams for the chance to jump out of planes and carry large ruck sacks over long distances for little pay with the U.S. Army. More recently, he has helped Barley Snyder become the first two-time champion of the Lancaster “Professionals” League, inspiring his team before big games with rousing emails quoting the likes of the legendary Col. William O. Darby, William Shakespeare and (of course) Metallica. Todd Kriner #44 Greg Latimer #1 Greg “the Shark” Latimer jumped at the opportunity to lower the roster’s average age. Not without respect for his elders, he hopes to show the other “seasoned” competitors that even twenty-somethings can be “aged” and out of shape. With over twenty years of experience playing lacrosse, he’s looking forward to having a blunt object back in hand in case of any disagreements. Greg hopes his on-the-field play pays homage to the greatest baseball team, and sports city, in the union–the Baltimore Orioles! The Honorable Joseph C. Madenspacher #32 John H. May #4 John May is the President of the Lancaster Bar Association and is the third generation of his family since 1929 to promote inter-county bar association collegiality by attempting to mercilessly pummel the hapless members of an adjoining county's bar. When he isn't volunteering his time training the country's elite softball players at the IMG Sports Academy, John is a partner at May, May & Zimmerman, LLP. Randy Moyer #13 David Natan #6 David “the Mouth” Natan is best known for the puffery surrounding his athleticism. His is most proud of getting a cardboard star in 2nd grade for hitting a home run during gym class. That was also the last time he ran anything but his mouth. Best described, in appearance only, as the Babe Ruth of the Lancaster County Solicitor’s Office, his only goals are to neither sweat nor pull a muscle in his jaw. Sheila O’Rourke #51 Sheila O’Rourke began her illustrious softball career playing for a little league team whose very name instilled fear in all of its rivals: the Sea Chants. Hailing from a long line of catchers, Sheila continued the tradition,

and accordingly, please do not expect much from her if she is playing a position that involves depth perception or moving quickly. Sheila’s favorite aspects of the game include chewing on sunflower seeds and weird softball cheers. Sheila is an associate at Gibbel Kraybill and Hess, focusing on land use and civil rights, and is also proud mom to a 9-month old, focusing on Pat[ting] the Bunny and peek-a-boo. Alex Puskar #11 Alex is still a relatively new player for the Lancaster Bar Association, as he is currently going into his last year of his rookie contract. Although his playing career has been relatively short, it has certainly not been without triumph. In just his first season as captain of the Barley Snyder softball team, he led the team to a league championship in the Lancaster Professionals League. Alex hopes this success can carry over to the Lancaster Bar Association and looks forward to contributing to a good cause. CJ Restemayer #17 CJ Restemayer hails (pun intended) from the land of apple pie, dogwood flowers, baseball, and tornados. Since electricity didn’t come to the Midwest until the mid-1990s, stick ball was a regular pastime for all local youths in the Show Me State. Nowadays, she has traded in her old ways for suits and court hearings. While she hasn't played softball since graduating law school (a whole three years ago), she excels at walking quickly and carrying heavy court files. CJ hopes that her appearance brings some pride to the Solicitor's office, or at the very least, brings no shame. Angela F. Rieck #23 Angela is looking forward to her return to “professional” softball after a years-long hiatus due in large part to a broken rib sustained during a game in the now defunct LBA softball league. Angela is hoping that the skills she honed as a member of the Franklin & Marshall Diplomats and Manheim Township High School softball teams are still buried deep within her and will allow her to not embarrass herself and, better, to outshine her husband and teammate, Charles Rieck. Mostly, however, Angela is excited to be a part of this event to aid in the fundraising efforts of the LBA, YCBA and PBF foundations. Charles Rieck #24 Charles Rieck is a grizzled veteran of 14 years of softball against other similarly sedentary professionals, having played in the Lancaster Bar Association’s softball league until its dissolution and then the Lancaster Professionals League composed primarily of lawyers, accountants, and bankers, where he has served with distinction as the commissioner for the past 3 years. When he’s not praying against rain and its resulting scheduling issues, he is a business and estate planning attorney with Blakinger Thomas, husband to #23 in your program, and father to two small children. The Honorable Bruce Roth #33 Bruce Roth gave up his dream of playing professional softball to serve his community as an Assistant District Attorney in the Office of the District Attorney of Lancaster County. After his career as an ADA, Bruce walked away from a career as a professional jazz guitarist to serve as a Magisterial District Judge. Bruce is playing to make his Boston Terrier, Scrappy, proud of him. Eric Schelin Rothermel #-8 Eric was critical to the success of the 2004, 2007 and 2013 Boston Red Sox World Series Championships. His ability to yell at his television and influence the decision making of both Terry Francona and John Farrell to ensure that the Sox were ultimately successful is indicative of his metaphysical abilities. When not transcending laws of physics, Eric appreciates a diversified practice of the law that touches upon almost every conceivable area. Except criminal law. Because crime doesn’t pay. The Honorable Lawrence Stengel #3 Jill S. Welch #48 Aka “Jillbaby,” some of you may remember Jill from her historic fame as catcher for the Manheim Township High School softball team crowned LL-League Champs nearly 35 years ago. Since then, Jill played catcher and third base for the Wittenberg University Tigers. Fast forward to this century, Jill is a veteran of Barley Snyder’s softball team, playing Whatever Position Happens to Be Vacant. Looking to support the good work of the Foundation, hopefully without pulling a hamstring (like others on Barley Snyder’s team who shall remain nameless), Jill is excited to join the War of the Roses. Jill does not intend to quit her day job, though, practicing in Barley Snyder’s Labor and Employment Law Practice Group. Adrian E. Young #36 Adrian “Six Million Dollar” Young was brought out of cryostasis to make his LBA Lions debut this year. Boasting more orthopedic surgical procedures than common sense, Adrian hopes to be completely thawed in time for the first inning. Presuming full functionality, Adrian should bring some additional range in the field and power to the LBA lineup. Following the game, Adrian will be shipped back to the Office of Scientific Intelligence for immediate refreeze until his country (or the LBA) needs him again. Jennifer Zuidema #55
