How You and Your Members Can Influence Public Policy this Summer

Page 20: Presidents Assembly Monthly Webinar June 28, 2012

Making your voice heard

• There are a number of ways to convey your message to your elected officials, including visiting their office, attending a town hall meeting, inviting them to a NAWBO meeting or event and sending a letter or email.

Page 21: Presidents Assembly Monthly Webinar June 28, 2012

Setting up a meeting or event with your Congressman

• It is best to request the appointment in writing four to six weeks in advance whether you’re meeting in Washington, D.C., in their local district office or at your place of business.

• Provide as many specifics as possible with regard to time and place, number of employees, etc.

Page 22: Presidents Assembly Monthly Webinar June 28, 2012

During Your Meeting or Event

• Select two or three issues to discuss. Review and rehearse the key points you want to make. Lastly, make a definite request for action.

• Be concise and think local. Establish a connection to the issue you plan to discuss by using personal and local examples and relate situations to the member’s home state or district to emphasize the need for his or her support.

Page 23: Presidents Assembly Monthly Webinar June 28, 2012

During Your Meeting or Event

• Be political. The most important issue right now is the economy/jobs. If possible, frame your issue in terms of economic growth and job creation.

• Follow up by sending a thank you letter and reiterate the points made during your meeting. If you said you would provide more information—provide it. This is your opportunity to prove that you are a resource and to establish an importantrelationship.
