March 2019
I trust that everyone stayed safe through last month's snow temper tantrum. Thank you to all who helped spread the info that the meeting was cancelled. There were a few moments during the day that I wondered if we had made the right decision, but then it started to snow and snow and....Just like when as kids we got a snow day to do unex-pected things at home, I hope you were able to find special quilting projects to accomplish.
Speaking of accomplishments, it has been a busy year thus far for the Guild. Great workshops, excellent retreats, inspiring speak-ers, charity quilts and peaceful Sew Days, not to mention mystery quilts, fat quarter draws, shops of the month and excellent prizes have populated our agendas in the last eight months.
It has been a terrific year and it is not over yet. More speakers, more workshops, more retreats and a Shop Hop extraordinaire will fill our time until end June. But (here comes the paid political announcement), as Vicki, our vice president, indicated last month, we need to turn our energy and our 'thinking caps' to next year's Guild operation. Many, many volunteer hours go into making our Guild so successful.
As we look to find members to replace those who are leaving the executive and non executive positions, we hear similar refrains: "I am not certain what the job entails"; "I don't know if I have the time"'; "I go away a lot"; "It is just the same people who do every-thing anyway".
But....I have a few responses:
• As an executive, we are working hard to
provide better handovers to new people and
we all have agreed to spend enough 'one on
one' time to get a new member up to speed
in his/her job.
• Time can be an issue for all of us. Fortu-
nately, our constitution allows JOB SHARING.
Each position only gets one vote, but the work
or doing the job can be split between two or a
small team. Only one person is required at
the executive meeting each month. The ma-
jority of the work is done outside ofeither the
Guild or Exec meetings and often planned
well in advance. If you go away for a few
months, please consider sharing a job.
• Lastly, to respond to---its always the same
people. It is often the same people because
they are handy, available and know how im-
portant it is to fill positions. But consider be-
longing and going to the Guild like going to
campfire at summer camp. The first night of

camp, there are those who choose seats
close to the fire--they may get cold easily
but more likely their personality drives
them to be in the thick of the action. Then
there are those who choose the back row,
really wanting to size things up, not certain
what the campfire and singing might be
about; they have a hasty exit planned if
they don't like it. Lastly there are those in
the middle, not wanting to get too close to
the fire but yet not wanting to miss any-
thing.
There is a good chance that most of us
are comfortable in the middle or the back
row. However, time comes to stoke the fire.
Those in the front row can grow weary of
carrying the logs, getting up from their
seats to do the work and maybe even get a
little warm.
As we approach the election time in
the Guild, it is time to think about changing
our seats. Some people are hot and tired of
being in the front row and need to step
back and maybe others need to get a little
warmer.
Please consider seriously moving to
a warmer seat. I know we all prefer to be
asked to do a job. Unfortunately, with the
size of our Guild, as an executive, we do
not know everyone. We need you to
say...'I can be the secretary' or
'community projects always has interested
me'..
In other news...the executive has been
working hard on many things behind the
scenes--fixing the website, planning the
shop hop, looking for speakers for next year,
keeping track of whether or not MIFO will
be available two years hence, updating doc-
uments and having some fun along the way.
Looking forward to seeing everyone in
March. L

PROGRAMME GWENN BECK-POTTIER
Irene LaFleche -TucanQuilt Quilts
From Raggs to Stitches
Showcasing some of her favourite quilts, follow Irene’s transition from a 35-year career in the Government and being owner of a home-based knitting business to her creative passion as teacher, designer and crea-tor of quilts, large and small. Under the company name of The Woolen Bear, started in the late 1980’s, she produced and sold winter-weight knitwear… on commis-sion as well as at local craft shows across Ontario. Knitting needles were replaced by quilting needles in the early 2000’s. In the fifteen years that she has been quilting she has produced over 300 quilts, ranging in size from miniatures, wall-hangings to King sized bed quilts. Initially a few were made for personal use with the majori-ty being given away as gifts and charitable donations to church and lo-
cal organizations. She has had membership in four Ottawa Quilt Guilds and currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Quilters Association. Irene looks forward to what lies ahead with new challenges, and continuing to learn and grow in this crea-tive field. She recently launched a website called TuCan Quilt, to further support sales, teaching and shar-ing ideas. Check out www.tucanquilt.com as well as her blog entitled The Falstaff Chronicles.

COMMUNITY PROJECT NEWS Cuddle Quilts
In November we received 73 cuddle quilts
from our members. Our total for this year
(from September) is 260! Great work, thank
you!
Non-skid Soles for CHEO Slippers
Volunteer Services of CHEO is asking if any
of our Guild members would be interested in
sewing non-skid fabric onto the soles of
slippers that are donated to CHEO. These
slippers are hand knit and are very slippery
on the hospital floors so they would like
volunteers to provide and sew on non-skid
soles. If anyone is interested, please come
and see us at the Community Projects
table at the next Guild meeting and we can
provide you with the contact information.
YM/YWCA TRY Supportive Housing for
Women.
The TRY program provides low cost housing
with support for women who are homeless
or at risk of being homeless. The women
have a private room but share common
washrooms and kitchen facilities. Rooms
come furnished with a closet, bed frame and
small fridge. Clients provide their own
mattress, bed sheets, towels, cooking
utensils, and groceries. Often these women
arrive with only a blanket for their bed. By
giving these women quilts we can help keep
them warm and hopefully provide some
comfort.
Summer Contest Panel Panache
The Summer Contest is now over. Thank
you to everyone who participated. At the
November meeting we had the draw and
two lucky people each won $50.
For those members who still have a panel
that they signed out, it’s not too late to bring
us a quilt. We still have a need for quilts.

Victoria’s Quilts Canada is a charitable organization of volunteers that provides quilts to people living with cancer in Canada – as a gift. To make the quilt tops, we rely on donations of 100% cotton fabric. We can’t use Christmas, baby or novelty fabrics, but we take just about anything else – as long as it’s unused and at least ¼ metre in size. Why not trim down your unruly stash by do-nating part of it so that we can continue providing comfort to those dealing with this dreaded disease.
