Beauty in Strokes

As much as I struggle with basic strokes, Onya has proven to be a master at guiding all levels of skills, and thank goodness, my piece actually looks good! Thank you Onya for a great class, we are so lucky to have painters willing to share their talents with us. I want to thank all those who volunteered to decorate a table for our Christmas party, we now only need raffle prizes and name tags. NEWS from 1st Vice Presidents (Programs) June Class: Everyone enjoyed painting the Os flower designs on their pencil box or surface of their choice. The boxes were so darling and now we find out there is a companion piece. Onya’s step by step instruction made the flower pedals and leaves go on with ease. The members had a wonderful time because Onya made it such an enjoyable painting day. How about our Candy setting up an old fashion ‘red, white and blue’ lunch with hot dogs, beans and salads, not to mention the root beer floats for dessert. Way to kick off the summer months! We also had a very active raffle with many members donating summered themed items. Thanks to all the members who purchased tickets to support our chapter- very generous. Marilyn set up the garage sale tables to give us many items and patterns to add to our stash at home.

July 20 class: Rosemary West Watering Can For those of you who attended the June class we had the Rosemary West watering can on display for you to view. You can adapt this pattern to use on the surface of your choice or pick up a watering can. The original was done on a table. Paints used are Jo Sonja acrylic. Don’t forget this class is the 3rd Saturday in July. Patterns available

August 10 class: Sunflower We are so excited to have Janet Mitchell coming from Hesperia to teach our class. She has taught at many of our sur-rounding chapters, so we look forward to having her visit ours. This project is painted using acrylic paint but done on watercolor paper. Sign up for the class- get the watercolor paper free. We have a notebook showing illustrations of the prep work and the project piece is on display for you to view at the monthly paint ins. Part of the background is stamped on (all done in class). The teacher has a limited number of stamps so if you have one in your stash that you would like to use, please bring it to class. Patterns available

September 14 class: Provence Café Get your canvases out. Jack is ready to teach you a ‘Café’ scene reminiscent of Europe. Last year’s class Jack offered a lot of individual attention to each member so if you are a little shy in painting on canvas you will get a lot of one-on-one help. Choose any size canvas with the littlest size being 8x10 inches. Paint can be oils or convert colors to Jo Sonja Acrylics. Patterns available.

San Diego County Fair- Make & Take Session

PHP had a great Make and Take session at the fair on Sunday the 30th, with both children and adults paint-ing on water color paper fans, paper-mache stars, wood cutouts, and our little wooden boxes. Our “Fab Five” team of Jean Cooke, Charlotte Hicks, Lorene P, Susan Schoeppner, and Linda Silvasy helped as many as 14 fair patrons at a time with their mini painted masterpieces. Our three and a half hour session was very well attended and we all had a wonderful time sharing our knowledge and promoting art. We hope to ex-pand out session times for next year. Please think about joining us.

People born between June 21 and July 22 are born under the Cancer sign. These people are so loving, you can almost consider them emotional. Cancers make up the greater part of caring folks on this earth. They cherish family and friends dearly and are usually doting pet owners too. They are also highly creative and make gifted artists or design-ers. Cancers have a wonderful imagination and tend to gravitate to artistic environments where they can express their talents. People born between July 23 and August 22 are Leo’s. The Leo is giving, willing to help those in need. Very cheerful and uplifting, they will be the first to help you through a hard time. The Leo’s personality is full of charm and excite-ment, and they are very giving and kind. Exciting and alluring, people are drawn to them. They are persevering and committed to hard work while at the same time drawn to the luxuries of life, making them good friends or mates.

Lucinda Aranda, one of our new members, celebrates her birthday on July 3. She shares her birthday with Tom

Cruise (56 years old!), Oliva Munn and a bunch of YouTube stars.

Ina Shaefer-Chavez, also new, shares her July 6 birthday with Sylvester Stallone, George W. Bush, Kevin Hart, Nan-cy Reagan and The Dali Lama.

Sharon Carlen shares her July 7 birthday with Ringo Starr. Also born that day are Matthew Espinosa, Ashton Irwin, Dylan Sprayberry and many more people I’ve never heard of!

Tina Burlason has her day on July 13 with Harrison Ford, Patrick Stewart, Bob Crane (Hogan’s Heroes) and even Julius Caesar.

Renee Molloy shares her July 17 birthday with Lucie Arnaz, Donald Sutherland, David Hasselhoff, Diahann Carroll and Phyllis Diller.

Shirley McDonald shares her July 18 birthday with Priyanka Chopra (tv star), Kristen Bell, Ricky Skaggs (singer/songwriter, fabulous banjo player), James Brolin and Richard Branson.

Carol Dombrosky, another new member, celebrates her July 21 birthday with Robin Williams, Don Knotts, Ernest Hemingway, Jon Dorenbos (former football player and amazing magi-cian), Cat Stevens and a bunch of young upcoming stars in all mediums.

Kenna Perrin shares her July 27 birthday with Alex Rodriguez (baseball player and current fiancé of Jennifer Lopez), Bobbie Gentry and Maureen McGovern (singer).

Cheryl Powell shares her July 31 birthday with J.K. Rowling, Dean Cain, Wesley Snipes, and Geraldine Chaplin.

July brings us the Dog Days of Summer, National Blueberry Month, National Anti-Boredom Month, the Unlucky Month for Weddings, Na-tional Cell Phone Courtesy Month, National Hot Dog Month, National Picnic Month and National Ice Cream Month

Of course there is also Independence Day celebrated on July 4 as is Na-tional Country Music Day and Sidewalk Egg Frying Day. July 10 brings us National Teddy Bear Picnic Day. Do you know where your teddy bear is? And July 20 we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Neil Armstrong’s “one small step for a man, one giant leap for man-kind”. I watched it on tv, did you?

Let’s hope we have many wonderful sunny days this July.

Ways and Means 2019

Only four more paint-ins until we have the annual Ways and Means drawing at the October paint-in. Winner need not be present to win although it’s always more fun that way. To date I have received money from 21 members.

My apologies to the members who were at the June paint-in that the actual items were not there for you to see. Hope-fully we will see them at the remaining paint-ins so you can see how wonderful the three entries are. Ziplock bags will be provided for you to put your tickets in. Extra tickets will be available at each paint-in or you may call me if you wish to receive more tickets.

Thank you for your participation!

Here are the three submissions:

1. Watercolor painted by Alden Avery. Donated by Merle Avery.

This beautiful scene would look wonderful with all décor. The finished

piece is approximately 11” x 14” and is beautifully framed.

2. Ornament box painted and donated by Sandy Garcia.

This round box is approximately 18” across. Chapter members are donating ornaments to place inside the box and will be included.

3. Four Season Ottoman and Storage Chest painted and donated by Cynthia Megill.

This design is by Heidi England and measures approximately 2’ x 2’ x 2’. This ois a wonderful pice that is

beautiful and useful. There is a pillow on the top that turns it from storage to extra seating.
