President’s Message Hello All, Wow! What a month! You know that saying, “Time flies when you are having fun!” That cliché definitely applies to the month of April! This past month we had our Annual Student Night at St. Arnold’s. Our Student Activities Chair and Committee evaluated a number of scholarship applications and provided five $1,000 scholarships to individuals. At our Board of Governor’s Meeting, we nominated your candidates to serve on next year’s (2013-2014) cabinet. Voting for the candidates will occur at the May meeting. April 19 th thru 20 th , we attended the CRC in Austin (more on that later). And this past Monday, we held our Annual Spring Golf Tournament where we had our largest attendance ever, literally selling out the entire golf course! So take note in the Fall when registration opens up for the Golf Tournament … register early! The Houston ASHRAE Chapter was represented well at the Chapter Regional Conference (CRC) in Austin at the end of April. We won top honors and awards in nearly every category! I am proud to report that we had more folks from Houston attend than usual. We were involved in the typical business meetings, technical seminars, committee workshops, and the annual awards ceremony. Most of the awards were recognition for last year’s efforts. Mike Donovan brought home the High Five Certificate, Challenge Award, Pinnacle and the Full Circle Chevron, for his service as our RP last year. In addition our Chapter attained another Gold Treasury Ribbon – Chapter Investor award. Chad Wiginton received the Round’em up Award, given to the best MP Chair within the region. Ken Shifflett was also awarded a medallion for the best effort in Student Activities. John Walik won Best Newsletter and Webmaster. Steve Roche won Best Refrigeration Chair. The Historian guys (Bruce Flaniken and Chase Williamson) won the Historian Golf Ribbon Award. Mike Donovan also brought home a CTTC Best Chair Award. A total of three Regional VIII Technology Awards were presented by our chapter. I received the Jack Thompson Award which is given to the Best Chapter President in Region VIII.

AND NOW LADIES AND GENTLEMEN… It gives me great pleasure to announce something that our membership has never heard announced before since 1972 (for people who are slow like me … that’s over 40 years). Without any further ado, I would like to state that THE HOUSTON ASHRAE CHAPTER HAS BROUGHT HOME THE GOLDEN GAVEL AWARD!!!

Our chapter is very fortunate to have a very active membership in all areas of our industry. Our members serve on related boards such as the Energy Engineers, Mechanical Contractors, USGBC, and the City of Houston to name a few. ASHRAE is represented throughout our city by our members. All of our officers and committee chairs are dedicated to serve. I couldn’t be more proud of everyone’s efforts and accomplishments! Finally, please make plans to join us for our May meeting which will be a presentation on Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) Systems. I look forward to seeing you there!

Student Activities

We are winding down another fantastic year for student activities. April 17th, the ASHRAE Houston chapter held our student night/YEA/refrigeration tour/membership night at St. Arnold's Brewery and was a great time by all. Five scholarships for $1000 each were awarded to Texas A&M students: Sebastian Eluvathingal, Hala Nemer, Oleksandr Tanskyi, Vasiliy Khmelenko, and Sukjoon Oh. There were 15 total in attendance from the TAMU student branch and they all were quite impressed with the refrigeration tour.

Ken Shifflett (r) / Student Activities Chair with TAMU ASHRAE Students At St. Arnolds Pub

It has been a great year for the TAMU chapter and membership levels continue to increase each year. The monthly student branch meetings average over 40 students. They had 20 + students attend both the ASHREA summer and winter conferences this past year. I should note that the Houston ASHRAE chapter

Page 10: President’s Message - ASHRAE Houston · Twin City Fan & Blower is an industry leading designer and manufacturer of high quality fans and blowers for all fan applications from heavy

generously supported a portion of their travel costs for both of the conferences. The TAMU student branch is extremely thankful for all that ASHRAE Houston does to support them and I want to make sure that everyone knows that. As this year comes to a close, we will take a short break over summer, but it will be time to refocus the goals for next year. Primarily those will be our ongoing efforts to grow student interest in ASHRAE within the local colleges (University of Houston, Rice, LoneStar college, etc..) and increase chapter participation of K-12 activities and involvement in Engineers Week. If anyone has contact information for potential interest or involvement, please email me at [email protected] Submitted by Kenneth Shifflett, P.E. / Student Activities Chair

Young Engineers in ASHRAE

YEA HOUSTON

We are proud to say that the Houston Young Engineer’s in ASHRAE Chapter is the largest YEA chapter in the U.S. and continues to grow daily.

Just 3 years ago Houston created a YEA chapter, and since then we have grown significantly and more than we could’ve imagined.

We have grown not only in the number of members, but in the development and progress of the group and chapter as a whole.

Our goal is for everyone 35 and younger to get the full experience of being a young engineer and worker in this industry and in ASHRAE. Being a member of YEA is a great way to expand your knowledge, get involved, meet fellow young engineers and workers in the industry, and have fun along the way!

We welcome all those who are 35 and younger in the industry to join us for the monthly meetings and happy hours. The events will be posted monthly in the HAR.

Please let Christine Porterfield or Brennan Vierra know if you would like more information on becoming a member: [email protected] / [email protected]

Keith Reihl Past ASHRAE Houston Chapter President 2010-2011

Houston Chapter ASHRAE Page 1

As a past Houston Chapter President in 1986-87 and a Houston Chapter ASHRAE Historian 1989 through 1996 and Historian Emeritus in 2011-12, I have had the pleasure to serve alongside many Chapter Presidents. The Houston Chapter ASHRAE President’s position is a demanding one and should be recognized for the several years of endurance and hard work that is actually required, not just for the one year as president, but the years leading up to this position typically one to two years of committee chair work, five years of riding the Chapter officers Train and a year as Past President. I have had the opportunity to work with Keith Reihl, in the role of CIC ASHRAE Energy Committee Delegate and want to bring you a little background on this committed ASHRAE member. Keith grew up in Hutchinson Kansas, a town of about 40,000 with lots of farms around it. Hutchinson has the State Fair, Kansas Cosmo-sphere and Space Center which is a Smithsonian affiliated space museum and an Underground (600 feet down) Salt Museum. He worked many jobs from mowing lawns to harvest crews as well as put his self thru school at Kansas State University where he earned his degree in Architectural Engineering in 1991. When asked about entering into the business world and making his way to Houston Texas, Keith responded: “After the winter of 1991 in Kansas and walking across campus with a -56F wind chill I decided to move south and moved down to Houston after a job in Hawaii fell thru. My first job was with at RH George and Associates designing mechanical systems. While working there I earned my MBA at the University of Houston in 1995. I had several jobs as opportunities to grow presented themselves before starting my own firm in 2005 to focus on more energy efficient strategies”. It is always interesting to hear how the industry has grown and changed during the years and Keith brought up that “In college I learned to draw by both hand and on CAD but hardly touched a mechanical pencil professionally and watched the offices move from drafting boards to workstations and desks. The amount of information that is available now is astonishing, and we are challenged to keep up with it on a daily basis. The biggest opportunity I believe is in making our buildings more energy efficient and so far we have seen the Energy Use Intensity of buildings drop by nearly half of those that were designed when I started in 1991.” In regard to the Chapter work, I asked what he enjoyed and his favorite memories about being an officer for ASHRAE; “By far the people are the best! I’ve made some good friends and enjoy networking at meetings with everyone. We have a great

community here where everyone really does try to help out. There is no way any of the officers could do their job without the support of many people in the chapter. I am truly grateful to everyone and the awesome work they do for ASHRAE and beyond. These are challenging times we live in and we can all make it together easier than apart, ASHRAE is a great place to make it together and share ideas”. Keith also added: “One of the more challenging things the chapter did was to put on the Chapters Regional Conference under President Kevin Murphy with only a month’s notice; most times it is planned 2 years in advance. The members of the board and many others came forward to help do this and we had lots of compliments about how well planned everything was……if they only knew it was planned on a napkin just a few days before”. Keith Reihl served in many capacities over the years; Past President 2011-2012, President: 2010-2011; President–Elect: 2009-2010 (also Chapter Technology Transfer/Programs Chairman); Vice-President: 2008-2009 (also Research and Promotion Chairman); Treasurer: 2007-2008 and Sustainability Chairman: 2005-2007. Keith made the following statement regarding his tenure as President: “Prior to becoming President I served as programs chair and challenged the status quo by planning a year of programs about green building which was received well by the chapter members, although initially the board wondered about it. The chapter received the Chapter Star and Dan Mills awards for the work we did that year in programs. As president the chapter was able to receive the Pinnacle award for the most money contributed to ASHRAE Research by any chapter. Many folks in the chapter contributed to this success including the RP Chair Alan Neely. Paul led the challenge of completely overhauling our website as I had many years ago when I started on the board. Instead of having to email out the newsletter in 4 separate emails, we put together 3 Evites for meetings, updated PayPal for online payment and then updated the website like we had been doing and did when I was President. We now have a totally integrated website that does all of this; but It was not without its challenges as I’m sure Paul Alexander will attest to”. Keith has long been an over achiever winning the following:2009-2009 Full Circle Chevron for Research Promotion, 2008-2009 Gold Treasury Ribbon, 2008-2009 BackPack ($/Member, Goal), the Region VIII Chapter Technology Transfer Award – Programs 2009-2010 for the Sustainability Series, the 2008-2009 Chapter Programs Star Award, the Society Dan Mills Award for 2009-2010 recognizing a Chapter Technology Transfer Committee Chair who excels in meeting CTTC goals in Technical, Energy and Government Activities, The Chapter Programs Star Award 2009-2010 for excellence in Chapter Program Endeavors and The Region VIII Jack Thompson Award for Best Region VIII Chapter president 2010-11. What would our AHSRAE members not know about you that they would be surprised to learn about you? “Well, several folks know I collect Hot Wheels Car’s and have quite a few of them. I’m also the Den 9 leader for my sons Cub Scouts and enjoy taking my telescope out to look at the stars when I can. I’ve been involved with USGBC (Currently the regional chair and past chapter chair), Construction Industry Council (Currently Treasurer) and I’m the Energy Code chair for the City of Houston. Although most folks know I’m focused on sustainability efforts my dad was an auto mechanic

and I tend not to drive fuel efficient cars, most of which have had V8’s in them including my current one”. We all thank and salute you for your commitment of time, energy and service to the Houston Chapter of ASHRAE and City of Houston. Thank you for sharing a bit of your history with us. Refrigeration

The La Belle Part 2 / Submitted By Steve Roche Last month, we talked about the events that lead to the decision to use the freeze drying process. Now we discuss the process itself. In order to preserve wood that has been submerged in water for a long period of time, the free water must be removed from the wood. The freeze drying technique sublimates this water by a combinationof low temperature refrigeration and vaccuum. The system at the Texas A&M conservation lab uilizes an 8 foot diameter by 40 foot long vacuum chamber.

Vacuum Chamber

Page 23: President’s Message - ASHRAE Houston · Twin City Fan & Blower is an industry leading designer and manufacturer of high quality fans and blowers for all fan applications from heavy

The refrigeration system employs a Carlyle compound 40 H.P. 6 cylinder compressor using R 404A capable of -60 degree suction. Condensing is done thru use of a shell and tube condenser piped in to a cooling tower.

Carlyle Compressor The ingenious part of the design was the evaporators. There are three evaporators. There is a coil that is wrapped around the outside of the vacuum chamber. Refrigerant is pumped thru this coil. Pumping refrigerant is common on large industrial systems but rarely seen on a system this size. However, the volume of the chamber cooling coil requires it. There is an auxiliary heater as well as solenoid valves to control chamber temperature. The other two evaporators are called the primary and secondary condensers. Yes, I thought they were miss-labeled until I understood the function. As the moisture is sublimated out if the wood, it has to go somewhere. The primary vacuum connection is tied in to the primary condenser. This water vapor is sucked out of the freeze drying chamber where it freezes onto a series of plates in the condenser. Periodically this condenser chamber is isolated from the freeze drying chamber and the

plates are heated up using discharge gas from the compressor. The melted condensate is then drained outside the chamber.

Primary Condenser The secondary condenser is used when the primary condenser is defrosting. The first batch of planks should be finished within the next two weeks. This represents approximately 25% of the hull. Over the next year the rest of the hull will be treated and assembled at the Bob Bullock museum in Austin. In addition to the hull, there are countless other artifacts from the La Belle that are being restored. This includes a variety of muskets and knives. My thanks go out to Peter Fix, Assistant Director, Center for Maritime Archaeology and Conservation for his help. The Texas A&M Center for Maritime Archaeology and Conservation is recognized as the tops in its field, Upcoming projects include restoration of a revolutionary war vessel discovered at the New York World Trade Center construction site and the rarest of WW2 U.S. airplanes, a Douglas TBD Devastator. The only known TBD aircraft that survived are underwater.

In Memoriam

It is with sadness that we announce that Richard “Dick” Cooper, past Treasurer of the Houston Chapter of ASHRAE and current member,

passed away on 4/20/13. Dick will be remembered as a dedicated professional committed to the industry, a great friend and mentor.

Coop (as he was affectionately called by his close friends) was born August 27, 1941 in Neptune, New Jersey, attended Brown University, was on the swim team and graduated in 1964 with honors with a Mechanical Engineering degree. He joined the Trane New York City office in 1965, working for RO Hunton as a sales engineer dedicated to assisting MEP engineers and became Engineering Sales Manager in 1980.

In 1982, he moved to Houston to become the Hunton Trane New Equipment Sales Manager and in 1990 was promoted to Vice President of the Hunton Group and General Manager of Hunton Trane. He retired (or as he called it “graduated”) in December of 2008 to pursue traveling and tennis. Dick always took time to help others in their career and contributed consistently to this industry working with contractors, owners and engineers to provide the best solutions to problems and issues. He will be sorely missed. We are asking all who want to honor him to contribute to ASHRAE Research in his name and to mail contributions to:

ASHRAE RESEARCH C/O Michael Langton

Treasurer, Houston Chapter of ASHRAE 3350 Yale St

Houston, TX 77018-7741
