PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
The year 2019 started out with some very sad news. As most of you have heard by now, we lost some very dear friends once more. On the 29 of January that Mr. Sid Braaksma passed away at the age of 75. I knew Sid for 43 years through my work at E Construction and got to know him as a business man with a big heart. Sid has supported the DCC in many ways; a big sponsor of the Silver Skate Festival at Hawrelak Park, setting us up with a double diner attached to our kitchen, complete with generators, water tanks and disposal tanks. Setting up our kitchen for the Spring Market again with a generator, and transferring our kitchen back and forth again to Hawrelak Park for the Heritage Days Festival. I recall a phone call a few years ago at my desk that went like this - Frank? Sid! Do you have a piano at the club? Yes, we do, actually we have 2 upright pianos. But you don’t have a Baby Grand, do you? No, we don’t. Well open the doors at the Hall the moving van is on the way to drop one off. How did this come to pass? Was at an auction last night and Danny Hooper asked me to open the bid on this piano, I told him I have one already at the Mansion, Danny said don’t worry it’s just the opening bid to get things going, guess what? It was the only bid, so open the doors and let those guys in. That was Sid - a generous man! I will miss his friendship and for sure the DCC lost one of a kind! The sad news did not stop as that same week we lost a good friend of the club Tony Man in ‘t Veld passed away in the Netherlands at the age of 66 after a long battle with cancer. Tony was a member of the executive for several years but most of you remember him as one of the DJ’s of the Dutch Language Program at CKER Radio on Saturday mornings from 10 am to noon together with Yvonne Johan and Dolf and Toni Hantelmann. Tony was a man with a smile and a big heart that would melt the polar ice cap, his sense of humor was fantastic. Again, some one that has left a lasting impression in the Dutch Community,

Presidents’ Message continued: We also lost Fronie Logtens, a women that always saw what some people did to keep the DCC up and running; she would put a small memento together with some things from the Thrift Store and presented it to you with a warm smile and a hug and you walked away with this small token of appreciation like you just received the Order of Canada. And, last, but not least, we received the news that Aloysius “Louie” Damen passed away at the age of 91. His nephew phoned me a few weeks ago that he wanted to have a special afternoon at the Club to have a celebration of life for his Uncle so they picked March 14th being a Thursday so they will bring a cake and you can share a story with the family. Louie’s brother will come from Holland. Louie was a kind and friendly man, always a smile and a handshake for any who wanted to talk to him. Lastly, the litany of sad news was the weather at the Silver Skate Festival this year - double digit temperatures which meant low turnouts and a skeleton crew to help out the NextGen - Daniel, Stephanie and Sietske with the help from parents and some of our diehard volunteers. Well, my friends, the good news for February was the surprise visit from my Sister Anneke for my birthday! I did not know that she was a Klaverjas player extra ordinaie and she saved the Tuesday afternoon tournaments two times with her presence; otherwise 3 players had to sit out Thanks Zus we had a blast having you here!

WINDMILLS The month of February is gone, but not winter. Well, March 20th is the official first day of Spring, we have three weeks for the weather to make up its mind, it is time for the snow to fall elsewhere. Spring will be here before we know it. Valentine’s Day was enjoyed by everyone present. I am sure that the ladies liked the baskets with fruit and candies. Boerenkool luncheon is scheduled for Thursday March 14, 2019. We are sure that the Boerenkool will be enjoyed by everyone. In Drenthe and in some areas in Overijsel, Boerenkool is enjoyed with vinegar, to give it more flavor. Not my cup of tea, but to each its own. Easter falls late this year; the Windmills will be celebrating Easter on April 18th. Ladies, now might be a good time to look at your Easter hat, may be make a new one for this year. As always, we will have the Easter Hat parade. Who knows who will win this time? A Happy Birthday goes out to everyone celebrating a birthday in March. We wish you health and happiness in the coming year. Our thoughts are as always with the sick and shut-ins. We hope to see you soon!

Concordia University’s International Days 2019: On January 23, 2019 the Dutch Canadian Club represented The Netherlands at Concordia University’s Intercultural Days. This University offers their students international experience by being affiliated with more than 70 universities all over the world through their International Partner Program and as a result many students from other countries enrol for a semester in C.U.E (Concordia University Edmonton). Two Universities in the Netherlands are International Partner Universities: Fontis University International Business School in Venlo and Avans University of Applied Sciences in Breda. On this Intercultural Day the students get the opportunity to learn something about some of the countries through food, displays and entertainment. The Dutch Canadian Club has participated in this event for six years now and it is always great to talk to the students and get them to try some of our food. And our Polonaise is very popular with many of the young people participating. This year we brought the sjoelbak for some hands-on experience. It was a hit too! We received the following Thank You note from C.U.E.: A huge thank you from the Concordia Edmonton family for your participation in our 2019 Intercultural Day! NextGen Soccer Team (submitted by Rinske ter Heide) The season for the DCC FC soccer club is well on the way. The games are played Sunday evenings in the new Scotties dome on the Southside. They play in a mixed team 6 against 6, including goalies, having to always have at least 2 women on the field. Leading for the most part of the game last week, it looked like they could pull off a win, but in the end they lost with a very respectable score of 3-2.
Boerenkool (Stamppot) As winter continues, and since the Windmills will be enjoying this meal this month; I thought it would be fitting to include one of the many recipes for this dish that you can find on the internet – this one is from https://www.holland.com/global/tourism/information/traditional-dutch-food/recipe-boerenkool-kale.htm As soon as there is a frosty chill in the air, the Netherlanders appear to have a sudden increased appetite for cruciferous vegetables, particularly Brussels sprouts and kale, known in Dutch as boerenkool. The country has a very solid and versatile repertoire of winter dishes. Although there may be regional variations, the main dishes are solid in the sense that many consist of the culinary trinity (meat, vegetables and potatoes) and versatile because well..because there is scarcely a thing the Dutch don't add to their famous "stamppot". Literally meaning ‘stomped pot’, stamppot is a dish that consists of boiled potatoes mashed with a raw or cooked vegetable: raw spinach, turnip greens or, in this case kale. When carrots and onions are used instead, the dish is called hutspot. Boerenkool (stamppot) is possibly the country’s favorite stamppot, often served with smoked sausage on the side. Besides being a traditional winter dish, boerenkool is also quickly becoming the dinner of choice for New Year’s Eve. Not surprising if one surveys the rest of the traditional items for that festive night: sugary oliebollen and appelbeignets! Boerenkool 500 grams (1.1 lb) kale 1 kg (2.2 lb) potatoes 25 grams (9 oz) unsalted butter 50ml (1.7 fl oz) milk, warm 1 smoked sausage (275 grams, 9.7 oz) Pinch of salt Wash the kale. Rip the leaves off the stems and slice the leaves into narrow strips. Peel the potatoes, quarter them and place them in a Dutch oven. Add water to barely cover the potatoes, add the kale on top. Place the smoked sausage on top of the kale. Cover the pot with a lid and bring to a boil. Boil on a slow flame for about 20 minutes or until the potatoes are done. Remove the sausage, pour off any cooking liquid that may remain and mash the vegetables with a fork or a potato masher. Add the butter and the milk (or use some of the cooking liquid for a lighter option) and stir into the purée. Taste and adjust the salt if needed. Slice the smoked sausage and serve with the stamppot. Serve with mustard if desired.

Silver Skate 2019 (submitted by Rinske ter Heide) This year’s Silver skate was probably one of the coldest in recent memory! Both weekends were extremely cold. Hats off to all the volunteers and also to the public who braved the sub-zero temperatures along with the wind-chill. The festival was very well organized and they had a great layout and schedule of events with something for everyone. In addition to the traditional skating events, there were cross country ski races, snow shoe races, winter triathlon, fat bike races and lots of fun activities like the popular ice slide for the kids, Frisbee on ice, fire sculptures, horse drawn sleigh rides, the Cree winter camp, cooking bannock on an open fire, the wonderful creative ice sculptures and even helicopter tours. A real shame that some of the activities had to be cancelled due to the cold weather. We had a quick walk around on our break from volunteering in the trailer, but boy was it cold!!. We enjoyed the life entertainment next door in the Spirits on Ice tent while having a “cold” craft beer on tap. The organizers did tell us they had a great turn out the night before at the annual “Downtown Defrost” electronic music party. It was held this year as part of Silver skate since Churchill square is under construction. We had fun Sunday while helping out at the trailer for a few hours. Frank came out to deal with some issues with the fryers but it all got resolved. Everything was running very smoothly under the capable guidance of Daniel Bok. . Thanks Daniel for organizing and running this whole operation along with the Next Gen group and the volunteers helping with food preparation back at the club. It’s a big job and the same amount of work to put it on, whether it’s busy or not. This year’s public turnout was dismal, but since people missed coming out this year they may be more interested in coming out next year, if the weather cooperates.

The DCBC did not have a meeting in February. Next meeting is March 19th. We are sad about the passing of Sid Braaksma. We will dearly miss him at the Dutch Club and also at Silver Skate. He has meant so much for so many people! Silver Skate was again a great event! Despite the cold and cancellations of sport events the first weekend it was great to visit Hawrelak Park this time of the year and enjoy the music, fire sculpture, heritage village and snow garden attractions and have a cup of snert or hot chocolate with stroopwafels from Costco 😊😊 at the Dutch Trailer. Next year the Festival will be 30 years young! Thank you for your donation in support of Light Horse Park All, I hope this finds you well and I would like to thank you very much for your previous donation in support of our saving the Cenotaph within Light Horse Park. I wanted to give you an update on our progress and let you know we are working had to get the project completed. It is through the efforts of fine folks like yourself, that we will be successful. Phase 1 of the project is complete and the Cenotaph has been moved to a more safe and secure location. It now resides on a new concrete base supported by a paving stone walkway. Our first Nov 11th service in this new location was conducted with the Premier of the Province in attendance in 2018. A special shout-out to the superstar efforts of Becky our City of Edmonton Project Manager to allow us to make that deadline! Phase 2 will put our Alberta Shield in place, will develop the plaza, add memorial walls and will see us be able to offer Memorial Markers for purchase. Note that we are working with our overseas supporters to seed Tulips and Poppies from Holland and Flanders and have all the items for the time capsule which will be placed in the base of the Cenotaph this year. In addition, Catherine Saffron has joined the team and she will head the design and build of the educational panels. All this work should be completed late in 2019. Phase 3 will see the obelisk built and will see the final touches to the landscaping. We are hoping for 2020 for that work. I have included our design package as part of this update so you can get a better feel for the scope and scale of the project you are making possible. Spring comes early as temperatures climb towards 20 degrees
Spring has arrived in the last
days of February with temperatures nudging 20
degrees, according to online weather forecasters. Weeronline reported conditions would stay
sunny and dry across the country until Wednesday, when
the maximum temperature is expected to be between 15 and 18 degrees. A few hotspots in
North Brabant and Limburg could get up to 19 – the kind of conditions usually seen in late
April. The contrast with 12 months ago could hardly be
greater, when freezing conditions gripped the country
and a temperature of minus 10.5 degrees was recorded in
Woensdrecht. Nights will remain cool, as low as 2 degrees on
higher ground in the south, and the Wadden islands will also be
less warm, though still a relatively mild 11 to 14 degrees.
Low cloud or mist may hang over parts of Groningen on
Tuesday morning, while coastal areas will be a few degrees
cooler on Wednesday as a slight south-westerly breeze begins to
pick up. Clouds will start to gather from Thursday afternoon, bringing the temperature back down below 15 degrees, with the chance of rain increasing
through to Sunday.
