I wanted to thank Dane Redinger PEPresident of the Central Ohio ACI section forhis grouprsquos effort planning the Decemberdinner meeting that was held at the ArlingtonCafeacute The presentation discussed thereplacement of the I-71 Jeremiah MorrowBridge project that is being built by KokosingConstruction and designed by HNTBCleveland Both Ryan Cocco of KokosingConstruction and Murat Aydemir PE SE ofHNTB did an excellent job explaining thedesign and current construction sequence andgave us an in depth view of the scale andcomplexity of this massive project in SouthernOhio

Javits Convention Center and the Georgia Domein Atlanta and a cable-stayed pedestrian bridgeat Rockefeller University He is the inventor of theTenstar Dome structure a unique tensegrity ca-ble dome used to cover large spaces with minimalobstruction Mr Levy has served as an expert inforensic investigations including the World TradeCenter Collapses in New York He was elected tothe National Academy of Engineering in 1996
Ever since the late nineteenth century structureshave been built higher and bridges have spannedfurther In 1939 when I arrived in the UnitedStates New York could boast having the worldrsquostallest skyscraper the Empire State Building andSan Francisco the worldrsquos longest suspensionbridge the Golden Gate Bridge After the SecondWorld War these records would soon tumble aslonger and taller structures would be planned andbuilt until here we are in the twenty-first centurywith Dubairsquos Burj Khalifa tower scraping theclouds at 828 m high and the planned Stretto diMessina Bridge jumping 5070 m across the straitseparating Sicily from the Italian mainland Havewe reached too high and too far in our quest forsheer size Have we reached the technologicallimit of how high we can build or how far we canspan What about Frank Lloyd Wrightrsquos mile hightower and the tempting Strait of Gibraltar waitingto join Europe to Africa I propose to explore thelimits that technology presents us in this questand whether there are socio-economic con-straints that may outweigh mere physical limits
