THE NEWSLETTER FOR ALUMNI AND FRIENDS OF THE OMEGA ZETA OF LAMBDA CHI ALPHA AT AUBURN UNIVERSITY SPRING 2014 The Omega Opuscule 1 President Colton McKinney, Ω 2586 Speaks Out Over the past three years our chapter has gone through many changes. The previous leadership had to make tough decisions that changed a negative culture within the brotherhood at Auburn. These decisions have saved, strengthened, and have now begun to rebuild the chapter to a level that Lambda Chi expects. Last year’s officers ensured that the chapter continued to move forward; improving relationships with sororities, increasing our presence on campus and continuing our traditional philanthropy activities. I am thankful for the efforts of everyone in the chapter that have led us to where we are today. As we enter our 99th consecutive year as a chapter, our new officers hope to continue this growth and reach our ultimate goal of leaving the chapter in a better, more stable place than it was when we took office. Morale in the chapter is at its highest since I associated in 2011. We are all looking forward to what the future in the chapter might bring. Thanks again for your continued support and War Eagle! President Colton McKinney, Ω 2586 Speaks OutOver the past three

years our chapter has gone through many changes. The previous leadership had to make tough decisions that changed a negative culture within the brotherhood at

Auburn. These decisions have saved, strengthened, and have now begun to rebuild the chapter to a level that

9th Annual Michael Allphin Memorial Golf Classic

3

The chapter’s annual golf tournament honors Brother Michael Allphin, Ω 2207, who lost his battle with cancer in 2005 at the age of 24. Over the past eight years, more than $40,000 has been donated to charity.

This year, proceeds from the tournament will benefit Eagle Ranch. Eagle Ranch is a Christian-based children’s home in rural north Georgia. The Ranch houses 66 boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 18. It is a multi-faceted center – a home, a school and a counseling center – where children live for a season of their lives while their families learn to put their lives back together again.

Eagle Ranch was founded in 1985 by Brother Eddie Staub, Ω 1330. Staub played varsity baseball at Auburn University and graduated in 1977 with a bachelor’s degree in science education. He obtained his master’s degree in physiology from Auburn University in 1981.

Richard Wood graduated from Eagle Ranch in 1997 and stated, “The Ranch takes kids dealing with a multitude of issues and gives them a stable, loving and spiritual environment where they can focus on themselves. The Ranch taught me how to set goals and accomplish them.”

If you are unable to attend this year’s tournament but would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to Eagle Ranch, please mail a check, made payable to Eagle Ranch, to Barry Allphin, Ω 1215 (6035 Bluebird Lane, Leeds, AL 35094). Donations can also be made online by visiting www.EagleRanch.org/donate. Once there,

• Select “General Gift”• Complete the donation information

section.• Type “For Michael Allphin

Tournament” or “Lambda Chi Tournament” in the “Comments or Special Instructions” box.

• Click the submit button to confirm your donation.

• When: The 4-person scramble tournament will be on Saturday, April 5, 2014. The schedule of events is on page four.

• Where: Auburn Links at Mill Creek, 826 Shell Toomer Parkway, Auburn, AL 36830, (334) 887-5151. Golf Digest recently presented Auburn Links with the Four Star award and Links Magazine ranked the course 3rd best among public courses in the Southeast. Additional information is available at www.auburnlinks.com.

The tournament will provide a unique opportunity to bring alumni, parents, friends, brothers and associates together for an exciting day on the course followed by a casual dinner. A registration form, which includes sponsorship opportunities, is provided on page four.

The deadline for receiving registration forms and checks is Friday, March 28. Make plans now to join Lambda Chi for a great event. Together we can make a difference!

Proceeds from the 9th Annual Michael Allphin Memorial Golf Classic will benefit Eagle Ranch, a Christian-based children’s home in rural north Georgia. Richard Wood graduated from Eagle Ranch in 1997. He is pictured above standing in front of a house at Eagle Ranch holding a picture from his childhood.

Lt. General Ronald Burgess Addresses Chapter Lt. General Ronald Burgess, a 38-year

U.S. Army veteran who spent much of his career in the upper levels of military intelligence and security, addressed Omega Zeta during chapter held on October 9, 2013.

“It was a moving speech on leadership and becoming a man,” said John LeMaster, Ω 2619. “The chapter was honored to have him at the house.”

Burgess served as director of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency from 2009 until July 2012. He recently joined Auburn University as senior counsel for national security programs, cyber programs and military affairs. Lt. General Burgess

Alumni Support Needed for New Recruitment Plan

In order to comply with Interfraternity Council recruitment policies and the directives of Lambda Chi Alpha’s Cole Recruitment Institute, Omega Zeta is developing a new recruitment plan. Alumni support and input is vital for the new plan to be successful. To get involved, host a recruitment event or obtain more information, please contact Andrew Bergen, Ω 2625 at (817)-909-3666 or [email protected].

Former High Phi Chase Horton, Ω 2579 received the 2013 Bill “Scrooge” Lee Senior Leadership Award.

The award is named after Brother Bill Lee, Ω 1119 for his years of hard work and dedication to the chapter, The Omega Club and as an advisor to the Alumni Advisory Board. The award is presented annually to the most distinguished senior leader in the chapter.

Horton was selected to receive the award based on to his dedication and outstanding work to the initiation ritual.

House Goes Double Occupancy

The vote has been passed, starting fall 2014 there will be two brothers living in each dorm room of the house. This will increase live in numbers from 20 to 38 brothers. This will strengthen brotherhood among those living in the house and make the chapter a tighter knit unit. When brothers pledge their associate membership and become an initiated brother, the following fall semester they will be required to live in the house to fulfill their duty to the chapter. “I really look forward to living with the majority of my associate membership class next semester; it will be a lot of fun and a good way to really develop great friendships that we will have for a lifetime,” says Graham Davis, Ω 2652.

RESERVE YOUR PARKING SPOT

TODAY!

Questions? Contact Jim Smith, Ω 1425 at [email protected] or (334) 233-8267.

The Auburn Tigers kick off the 2014 Football season on

AUGUST 30, 2014 against the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Where are you going to park before the game? Reserve your parking spot today!

Started in 2003 as an idea of Brother Steve McKinney, Ω 1339, the alumni parking program is designed to provide Lambda Chi alumni and friends a convenient place to park during home football games. Chapter members park in other parking lots on game day to make the fraternity parking lot available for the program.

Money collected from the parking fees goes into a fund to pay for major chapter house repairs and maintenance projects including landscaping, televisions, furniture, security cameras, door locks, washers and dryers and repairs including floor tile and the heat exchanger. Since the program began, more than $200,000 has been raised and if the lot sells out this fall, another $20,000 will be added to the fund.

For $400 per season, you get a reserved parking space for all of the home football games. You park in the same space every game, in a secure lot. Arrive whenever you want on Game Day, and “your spot” is waiting for you. There’s usually a meal served at the house before each game. If it’s raining or too hot, you can enjoy visiting with

friends inside the house. The living room or social room is a great place to watch other football games before going to

Jordan-Hare.
