VICE PRESIDENTAL WORDS OF WISDOM

It's that time of year where we turn the page and look forward to another great year. And 2018 is

a BIG year for ACT2.

At our Annual Meeting (check out new day - a MONDAY - later in this Newsletter), we will have

the opportunity to vote for our new board, where you collectively begin to decide how we as an

organization move forward. Only with your ongoing support do our activities continue to evolve -

or not. The ACT2 board is always looking for new ways to keep you engaged and active in our

community. One major way you can get engaged immediately is to join the board. Each year we

vote on the President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary. This year, as it stands right now

when writing this, there is NO VP candidate. Plus every activity has a chair person who leads it,

or it doesn't happen. In many cases that individual has been doing their part for a number of

years, and might welcome some added support to carry the load, so your involvement is crucial

for our success. Therefore, please get engaged by contacting any one of us and joining in now.

As I stated earlier, this year, in particular is a BIG year, and we have a lot ahead

of us. 2018 is a Celebration of 30 years of ACT2. We, as a board, are already

discussing what this means and how we celebrate it in style. Several

dinners/activities are already in the discussion and pre-planning stages, but we

need more support. As you read this think about what you would like to see

us celebrate this year as it relates to your time in ACT2. I personally would like

to see 30 different celebrations - starting with the Annual Meeting - going throughout the year -

and ending with the biggest Christmas/Holiday Event in ACT2 history. I sometimes dream big,

but with your support, engagement and involvement it will happen.

Wth that said, see you at the Annual Meeting MONDAY, February 26th, if not sooner.

ORIGINAL ACT2 BOOK CLUB

On Monday, February the 26th, we meet at 12:30 at Susan Newsome’s apartment # 504, 590 Central Dr., in Southern Pines, 725-2025. The book for February will be Last Hope Island: Britain, Occupied Europe, and the Brotherhood That Helped Turn the Tide of War by Lynne Olson. The paperback version will be available on February 6 A

groundbreaking account of how Britain became the base of operations for the exiled leaders of Europe in their desperate struggle to reclaim their continent from Hitler, from the New York Times bestselling author of Citizens of London and Those Angry Days When the Nazi blitzkrieg rolled over continental Europe in the early days of World War II, the city of London became a refuge for the governments and armed forces of six occupied nations who escaped there to continue the fight. So, too, did General Charles de Gaulle, the self-appointed representative of free France.

As the only European democracy still holding out against Hitler, Britain became known to

occupied countries as “Last Hope Island.” Getting there, one young emigré declared, was “like

getting to heaven.”

In this epic, character-driven narrative, acclaimed historian Lynne Olson takes us back to those

perilous days when the British and their European guests joined forces to combat the mightiest

military force in history. Here we meet the courageous King Haakon of Norway, whose distinctive

“H7” monogram became a symbol of his country’s resistance to Nazi rule, and his fiery Dutch

counterpart, Queen Wilhelmina, whose antifascist radio broadcasts rallied the spirits of her

defeated people. Here, too, is the Earl of Suffolk, a swashbuckling British aristocrat whose rescue

of two nuclear physicists from France helped make the Manhattan Project possible.

Last Hope Island also recounts some of the Europeans’ heretofore unsung exploits that helped

tilt the balance against the Axis: the crucial efforts of Polish pilots during the Battle of Britain; the

vital role played by French and Polish code breakers in cracking the Germans’ reputedly

indecipherable Enigma code; and the flood of top-secret intelligence about German operations—

gathered by spies throughout occupied Europe—that helped ensure the success of the 1944

Allied Invasion.

Discussion Leader: Dot Greenwood. Refreshments: Jeanne Casinella and Jan Carey. The March reading will be short stories of O. Henry. Please call Susie Roeder for any questions, 295-1747.

SATIATING STORIES

We will meet on Wednesday, February 28th at 11:30 a.m. at Table on the Green in Southern Pines. Our book this month is 'Strapless: John Singer Sargent and the Fall of Madame X' by Deborah Davis. The subject of John Singer Sargent's most famous painting was 23-year-old New Orleans Creole Virginie Gautreau, who moved to Paris and quickly became the "it girl" of her day. A relative unknown at the time, Sargent won the commission to paint her; the two must have recognized in each other a like-minded hunger for fame.

Unveiled at the 1884 Paris Salon, Gautreau's portrait generated the attention

she craved-but it led to infamy rather than stardom.

Sargent had painted one strap of Gautreau's dress dangling from her shoulder, suggesting either

the prelude to or the aftermath of sex. Her reputation irreparably damaged, Gautreau retired from

public life, destroying all the mirrors in her home

Drawing on documents from private collections and other previously unexamined materials, and

featuring a cast of characters including Oscar Wilde and Richard Wagner, Strapless is a tale of

art and celebrity, obsession and betrayal.
