Welcome

Presents

The Tabard TheaTre company

From Cathy Spielberger Cassetta, Producing Artistic DirectorHappy 2015! I’m excited to be kicking off the 2015 portion of our 14th season with Tuesdays with Morrie, especially with James Creer and Kurt Gravenhorst bringing this story to life under Doug Baird’s direction. Also in February we are bringing back the excellent Nineteen Jazz Ensemble (Feb. 7th) and the amazing Juanita Harris for a special concert on Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14th). Give yourself a gift and attend these outstanding concerts. Then in April, we close our 2014-2015 season with the rousing, inspiring, and exciting musical Violet. At that time, we will also be announcing our 15th season and offering our special Early Bird subscription opportunity. Lots to look forward to!

From Doug Baird, Director of Tuesdays with MorrieI have loved directing James and Kurt. They’ve inspired me. They’re clever, intuitive, willing to try new things, really willing to go out on a limb. It’s been fun watching them grow into their characters and develop the Mitch/Morrie relationship. This play is so beautifully put together; you see how Morrie’s situation affects Mitch and how Morrie even sets up his questions to help Mitch get through his troubled life and find his path. It’s a path we’re all on, really.

About Tuesdays with MorrieIn 1995, Mitch Albom re-encountered Morrie Schwartz, a former college professor who was dying of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). His visits with Morrie would lead to the book Tuesdays with Morrie, which Mitch wrote as a labor of love to help pay for Morrie’s medical bills. This chronicle of their time together moved Mitch away from sports and began his career as an internationally recognized author. The book spent four years on the New York Times Bestseller list and is the most successful memoir ever published. Oprah Winfrey produced the television film version of Tuesdays With Morrie in December 1999, starring Jack Lemmon and Hank Azaria. The film garnered four Emmy awards, including best TV film, director, actor, and supporting actor.

From Nick Nichols, Executive DirectorThank you for joining us for this wonderful production of Tuesdays with Morrie. This play is a beautiful homage to the life lessons a teacher can give to a pupil and, here at Tabard, we have always believed in the educational benefits and life lessons that young people can derive from theatre. Over the years our Conservatory @ Tabard youth programs have helped young people between the ages of 6 and 16 develop their imagination, self-confidence, public speaking skills, and sense of teamwork. This spring and summer we will, once again, be offering a number of programs for youth. April 13 through 17 we will be holding our Spring Break Camp doing Cinderella for Kids. June 1 rehearsals start for our spring mentor production Once on This Island, where young performers get to work with and learn from adult mentor performers. Once on This Island will perform July 17 through 19. And, finally, we will be holding six summer theatre camp sessions between June 15 and August 6. For more information, please see the page in this program as well as go to our website at TabardTheatre.org. Thank you for being with us and enjoy the show.

Mitch Albom (Playwright) is an internationally renowned and best-selling author, journalist, screenwriter, playwright, radio and television broadcaster, and musician. His books have collectively sold more than 35 million copies worldwide and have been made into Emmy Award-winning and critically-acclaimed television movies. His books include The Five People You Meet in Heaven, For One More Day, Have a Little Faith, and First Phone Call from Heaven. Prior to writing novels, Mitch worked as a freelance sports journalist in New York for publications such as Sports Illustrated, GEO, and The Philadelphia Inquirer. He moved to Detroit in 1985, where he became a nationally-acclaimed sports journalist at the Detroit Free Press and one of the best-known media figures in that city’s history, working in newspapers, radio and television.

Doug Baird (Director), a Tabard associate artistic director, previously directed Starting Here, Starting Now; Making God Laugh; Looking Over the President’s Shoulder; Driving Miss Daisy; and Hold On to Love, and co-directed Love, Laughter & Linguine. Other recent directing credits include Bells Are Ringing, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, and My Fair Lady at WVLO Musical Theatre. This summer, Doug will be directing Irene for WVLO.

Cathy Spielberger Cassetta (Producer) is a theatre/television veteran and entrepreneur who created/produced/co-hosted the weekly TV program Theater This Week in the 1990s before founding Tabard in 2001. For Tabard she’s directed Scapin, Dames at Sea, The Gifts of the Magi, The Dog Sitters, Sabrina Fair, A Taffeta Wedding, It’s a Wonderful Life, Crossing Delancey, Babes in Hollywood, and the award-winning production of Trying; she created and co-wrote More Than Petticoats; and she both directed and wrote Stompin’ at the Savoy; Bandstand Beat; The Duke, The Count, and Me; Love, Laughter & Linguine; and two plays in Tabard’s recent 10 in 10: Perspective.

Joe Cassetta (Technical Director) continues to lead Tabard’s technical team, which he has done since the company was founded in 2001. With a B.S. in mechanical engineering and an M.B.A. from Santa Clara University, Joe’s steady and skilled leadership has led to Tabard’s increased ability to explore and expand what we do technically.

Lucy Haab (Properties) has worked in theatre for forty years, both on stage and behind the scenes as a producer and as a props coordinator. She has loved being a part of all of the productions in which she has been involved and her favorites have included producing Ragtime, Ain’t Misbehavin’, She Loves Me, and Mack and Mabel. Being props coordinator is an area that always brings her lots of joy, and she is thrilled to be working in this capacity on her first Tabard production.

Jeffrey Hatcher (Playwright) is a playwright and screenwriter. In addition to co-writing Tuesdays with Morrie, he wrote the stage play Compleat Female Stage Beauty, which he later adapted into a screenplay shortened to just Stage Beauty. He also wrote Three Viewings, a comedy consisting of three monologues, each of which takes place in a funeral home. He wrote the screenplay Casanova for director Lasse Hallström, as well as the screenplay for The Duchess (2008). He has also written for the Peter Falk TV series Columbo and E! Entertainment Television.

Robert Lewis (Sound Designer) returns to Tabard after doing sound design for The Immigrant and running the sound board for 10 in 10: Perspective and Starting Here, Starting Now, as well as working in technical roles for most of the shows last season. A New Jersey native and electrical engineer by education, Robert is now a 27-year resident of the Bay Area (with stops in Dallas, Boston, and Tokyo along the way) and software consultant. Happily married for 35 years, he enjoys singing and playing mandolin with his church music group.

Hayley Lovgren (Costume Designer) received her B.A. in acting and design from Santa Clara University and her M.F.A. in musical theatre from The Boston Conservatory. Technical credits include Hair (costumes) and Les Liaisons Dangereuses (design assistant) both at SCU; The Importance of Being Earnest (costumes) with the Cardboard Box Theatre Company; and The Magician’s Nephew (makeup) and The World Goes ‘Round (stage manager) both with Tabard. Tabard audiences will remember her from A Taffeta Wedding and her strong performance in last season’s 1776.

Migi Oey (Scenic Artist) has been part of Tabard’s technical team since Bandstand Beat in 2011. She designed the set for the award-winning Trying. Her knowledge of the performing arts stems from photographing musicians to working with local theatres, schools, and corporate events. She is skilled at drawing, painting large-scaled murals and faux finishes, photography, floral design, textiles, and graphics.

Joan Rubin (Stage Manager) is managing her fourth show for Tabard, following Starting Here, Starting Now; Making God Laugh; and Looking Over the President’s Shoulder. She has stage-managed a dozen shows for Woodside Players and Woodside Community Theatre, as well many for Saratoga Drama Group / South Bay Musical Theatre. She notes it has been a most pleasurable and rewarding experience working with the serendipitous actors and staff of Tabard.

His musical works include Gypsy at Sunnyvale Theater; 1776 at Tabard; Seussical, Beauty and the Beast and The Wiz at the Heritage Theater; Into the Woods and The Sound of Music for Scotts Valley Performing Arts; and Rent for Kids on Broadway.
