We needed a fun song that would sup-port a wide range of voices and emo-tions for the audition scene in Pitch Per-fect, and this song fit the bill perfectly.

There seem to be two kinds of people:those who love Dirty Dancing, andthose who roll their eyes as soon as theyhear the opening of this song. I was in

the latter category until I arranged thisfor The Sing-Off at which point mydefenses were breeched and I join theranks of the happily swept away.


Born in San Francisco, California, DekeSharon has been performing profession-ally since the age of 8, and as a childtoured North America and shared thestage in operas with the likes of Pavarotti.Heralded as “The Father of Contempo-rary A Cappella,” he is responsible for thecurrent sound of modern a cappella, hav-ing created the dense vocal-instrumentalsound in college, and subsequentlyspreading it around the world. Deke pro-duces The Sing-Off worldwide (USA, theNetherlands, China, South Africa), whichhad the highest ratings of any new,unscripted television show in the U.S. in2009, and was the third highest ratedshow on NBC in 2010. In addition, Dekeserved as arranger, on-site music directorand vocal producer for Universal’s PitchPerfect, Pitch Perfect 2, and Pitch Perfect3 starring Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wil-son. Deke founded the Contemporary ACappella Society while in college, and isresponsible for many seminal a cappellaprograms, including the CARAs (Contemporary A Cappella RecordingAwards, ICCAs (International Champi-

onship of College A Cappella), BOCA(Best of College A Cappella Compila-tion), the first contemporary a cappellaconferences (the A Cappella Summit), theContemporary A Cappella League, andthe professional ensembles Voasis andVocalosity.
