  • Notes ON THE PROGRAMby Deke Sharon

Under Pressure (from The Sing-Off)Bowie, Mercury, May, Taylor, & Deacon

NBC originally only wanted one open-ing number for the first episode of TheSing-Off, but they liked this arrange-ment and performance (which you can

find on YouTube) so much that theydecided to make a big group openingnumber the signature opening for everyepisode.

Since U Been Gone (from Pitch Perfect)Max Martin & Luke Gottwald

We needed a fun song that would sup-port a wide range of voices and emo-tions for the audition scene in Pitch Per-fect, and this song fit the bill perfectly.

Luckily Id already arranged it and hadbeen singing it with the House Jacks, sowith a couple of tweaks, voil!

Getting There (from In Transit)Kristen Anderson-Lopez

On December 11, Broadways first all acappella show opened to a standingovation, and the audiences have beenleaping to their feet ever since. The all-star cast will be returning to the Broad-

way Stage at the end of todays 3 pmshow, which is why we have the entirecast opening todays Carnegie Hallconcert, as they need to rush back tothe Circle in the Square.

Thinking Out Loud (from Vocalosity)Ed Sheeran & Amy Wadge

Vocalosity joined us a year ago atCarnegie Hall, and since then have per-formed a hundred shows across America.

This was one of the audiences favorites:a traditional streetcorner rendition of theEd Sheeran Grammy winner.

Man in the MirrorSiedah Garrett & Glen Ballard

Hundreds of years from now, if only afew songs survive from our lifetimes, Ifirmly believe this will be one of them. Itsalmost like a modern-day hymn about

the need for us to be the change wed liketo see in the world, and its especiallypowerful to hear it sung by the next gen-eration (in this case: Northwood).

  • Campfire Cups (from Pitch Perfect 2)Carter, Tunstall-Behrens, & Gerstein

We had to somehow include the Cupssong in Pitch Perfect 2, and yet weknew we just couldnt do it again, sothis was our answer: transform it into a

song of reconciliation with a tinge ofmelancholy as the Barden Bellas singaround a campfire shortly before theircollege graduation.

You Dont Own MeJohn Medora & David White

Originally performed by a 17-year-oldLeslie Gore, this classic song of femaleempowerment is back on the pop charts

thanks to Grace and G-Easy. Now itwill be performed by a new generationof teenagers: Chamber Bravura.

    Uptown GirlBilly Joel

This was the first song I ever performedwith the Tufts Beelzebubs, during myaudition. Billy Joel might be the bestliving writer of male vocal harmonies in

pop songs (e.g. For the Longest Time),and there is no better than his love songto future wife, Christie Brinkley.

Tomorrow Never DiesSheryl Crow & Mitchell Froom

Not all Bond films are great, and no onewould argue that Tomorrow Never Diesis one of the finest. However, the themesong, written and originally performed

by Sheryl Crow, is one of the best fromrecent years, perfectly capturing that late-60s Shirley Bassey swagger.

Uptown Funk (from Vocalosity)Ronson, Mars, Bhasker, Lawrence, Williams, & Gallspy

Every decade there are one or two songsyou know youll hear played by DJs andparty bands for the rest of your life,

because theyre simply perfect dancesongs. This Bruno Mars smash hit willoutlive us all.

Sing a SongMaurice White & Al McKay

Earth, Wind & Fire seems to have onlygrown in stature and relevance sincetheir heyday in the 1970s, as peoplerecognize the deep artistry, complex

orchestrations, and impossibly tightgrooves that make our hearts swellwhen we hear them.

  • Put On a Happy FaceCharles Strouse

When people think of Dick Van Dyke, they usually imagine him in Mary Pop-pins or in his own black and white TVshow opposite Mary Tyler Moore, for-

getting that he was the original star ofBye Bye Birdie on Broadway, where heinimitably crooned this classic.

    Fields of GoldSting

There was always a poetry in Stingslyrics, but it wasnt until he began hissolo career and slowed down that hismusic writing fully aligned. This songremains one of his finest, and may in

many generations find its way to folksong status: the songwriter forgotten, but the melody and lyrics known andbeloved.

    Lifes So LyricalChris Jobe

Lifes So Lyrical - its not often Imasked to arrange an original song, espe-cially one written by a teenager, butForte is not your average high school acappella group. Theyre the reigningInternational Championship of High

School A Cappella champs, they makevideos with celebrities, and they releasealbums full of original songs by theirmembers. This song is the title trackfrom their first all-original CD.

    Youre My Best FriendJohn Deacon

A great song off one of my favoritealbums (Queens A Night At TheOpera), it was originally arranged for

Straight No Chaser as a gift to theirmothers on Mothers Day.

    Potpourr Mexicano/Mexican Medleyarr. Deke Sharon

Mexico and Latin America has been inthe news a great deal lately, and yetrarely is there mention of the tremen-dous cultural contribution they have

and continue to make to the US and theworld. You may not know these time-less songs by name, but you undoubt-edly know them all.
