THEATRE BY THE SEA, which is onthe National Register of HistoricPlaces, has had many incarnationsover the years. The Tyler family pur-chased the property in the early ‘20s.After Alice Tyler was left a widowwith three young children, she ranthe property as a summer camp forgirls. When the depression hit, shedecided to create jobs and provide afuture for her children by turning thebarn into a theatre. The 300-seat the-atre opened on August 7, 1933 with aproduction called Strictly Dynamite. That initial season lasted four weeksand featured four different plays, oneof which was taken to New York. In1938, a Yale Cooperative took over. Then, on September 2, a hurricanehit. The back wall of the theatre

WHO’S WHO IN THE CASTcaved in and the stage roof wasblown off. During the repairs, thetheater was expanded to include abalcony. The newly enlarged theatreoperated through 1941 and thenwent dark during the war. In 1946,the theatre’s most glamorous andstar-filled period began. The theatrebecame what is referred to as a “star-system” house opening with a showcalled Dream Girl which starred JudyHolliday. Other headliners who werebrought in included TallulahBankhead, Mae West, Groucho Marx, and Marlon Brando. Following the1958 season, the property was sold tothe Bontecou family, who leased itsporadically for several years, and by1966 there were plans to tear downthe theatre. Upon hearing that thetheatre was to be destroyed, TommyBrent, who had previously worked asa publicist for the theatre, returnedand saved the theater from demoli-tion. His first show opened on June23, 1967 and he ran the theatre suc-cessfully for twenty-two years. In1988, FourQuest Entertainment, which consisted of Laura Harris, (whohad previously worked at the theatrefor eleven summers), Renny Serreand Richard Ericson, came on board.Following extensive renovations,FourQuest reopened the theater inthe spring of 1989 and continuedproducing high quality summer the-ater in Matunuck until the fall of2003. The theatre went dark onceagain until 2007, when entrepreneurBill Hanney purchased the propertyand, with producing partners, suc-cessfully mounted a production of AFunny Thing Happened on the Wayto the Forum, just six weeks later, re-opening the historic theatre on Au-gust 8, 2007.
