THE HydraGEN™ FUTURE
FOR DIESEL TRUCKS:
LOWER FUEL CONSUMPTION / COST
LOWER EMISSIONS
Diesel goes green!
American Intermodal is the Exclusive US Dealer/Distributor of HydraGEN™
What Is HydraGEN ™ ?
HydraGEN utilizes a highly efficient
hydrolysis system, to convert distilled water
into Hydrogen and Oxygen Gas. This gas is
added to the air-intake of a Diesel Engine as
a combustion additive – enabling a more
complete and cleaner burn of diesel -
resulting in reduced fuel consumption and
lower greenhouse gas emissions.
The on-board condition monitoring
provides the user real-time data on vehicle
location, fuel consumption, and
performance – transmitted right to your
cell phone or tablet.
What Does HydraGEN ™ Do?
• HydraGEN ™ reduces both Fuel Consumption and Harmful Emissions in diesel engines …
… without any modification to the engine itself
• HydraGEN™ REDUCES YOUR OPERATING COSTS MORE THAN 18%
• Reduce Diesel Consumption - AVERAGE 15% on Class 8 Trucks / 23% on Reefers
• Reduce Overall Maintenance Cost
• Reduce Emissions (NOX - CO2 - CO) - Greater Than 44% / Particulates - Greater Than 65%*
• Increase: Torque / Oil & Engine Life/ Range
• Proven by 3 Independent Test Programs at U of Ontario, PIT Group, and Transport Canada
• Reduced Particulates = Fewer Particulate Filter Cleanings or Replacements / Fewer Regen Cycles
• Reduced Fuel Consumption = Extended Range Between Fuel Stops
• Reduced Emissions = Reduced Consumption of DEF = Reduced Operating Cost
HOW DOES HydraGEN™ WORK?• The revolutionary HydraGEN™ System produces up to 4L/min of gaseous hydrogen and 2L/min of
oxygen (ambient air contains approximately 21% oxygen, and 78% Nitrogen).
• Pure Hydrogen (H2) and Oxygen (O2) are produced through electrolysis of distilled water. These
gases are then separately dosed – and injected into the air intake of a diesel engine – on demand –
as a combustion additive to produce a more complete fuel burn. This reduces UHC (unburned
hydrocarbons), reducing greenhouse gases, and reducing overall fuel consumption.
• The Hydrogen gas does not replace/displace the fuel in the engine. It acts as a combustion catalyst
or enhancer to increase the burn rate and efficiency of the combustion cycle. The presence of
hydrogen in the combustion chamber increases the “flame speed” of the entire air/fuel mix by a
factor of ten (10). This ensures that all of the diesel in the fuel-air mix is combusted before the
internal compression goes below that required for the combustion of diesel. The Result: More Energy Output from the same amount of fuel as before !
• HydraGEN™ draws a max of 15 amps on a 12VDC diesel engine. The power consumed for
electrolysis is a maximum of 180 Watts or 0.24 horsepower. The additional power captured from the
better burn rate – vastly exceeds HydraGEN’s energy consumption.
• GPRS capability allows the Smart ECU to be accessed by the company and licensed end users for
tracking, condition monitoring, and data collection of increased fuel economy and Carbon Credits.
PROOF OF CONCEPT
• Technology Validation:
• Using Hydrogen gas as a combustion catalyst has been validated to improve the
thermodynamic performance of internal combustion engines by numerous scientific research bodies including – but not limited to – the following:
• NASA and JPL (Jet Propulsion Laboratories)
• California Institute of Technology• Argonne National Laboratory
• ETH Swiss Federal Institute of Technology – Zurich• University of Calgary
• American Hydrogen Association• Fisita World Automotive Congress – Barcelona
• University of Ontario – Institute of Technology – Automotive Center of Excellence• PIT Group – Montreal, Quebec, Canada
THE HydraGEN™ WORK FLOW• Reservoir is filled with Distilled Water
• The system is powered by the engine alternator
• HydraGEN™ produces gas only in proportion to the engine power demand
• There is no unsafe, onboard storage of Gaseous Hydrogen or Oxygen
• H2 and O2 gas are injected into the air-intake
• HydraGEN™’s ECU transmits real-time condition monitoring, location, and performance
data via its built-in SIM card – to your android or iOS device
• HydraGEN™ will send you a text alert, when it’s time to refill the Distilled Water.
THE HydraGEN™ BRAIN
Smart ECU
• Electronically optimizes H2 & O2 gas flow to the engine air intake
• Reports Operating Data and Performance to driver on In-cab tablet display
• Stabilizes signal from vehicle power output for consistent gas production
• Communicates performance and provides reports to Fleet Management through both the mobile app and through online reporting to your iPhone, iPad, tablet device, PC, or Mac.
• Carbon Credits will be earned and reported automatically
WHAT HAPPENS TO MY ENGINE? – 1Diesel engines typically do not combust all of the diesel injected due to the slow flame speed. Diesel fuel is
auto-ignited several degrees before the beginning of the power stroke upon reaching combustion pressure.
By the time the power stroke passes 13 degrees – the pressure drops too low to support continued diesel
combustion. The remaining, unburnt fuel (UHC) is jettisoned through the exhaust system in the form of
hydrocarbon emissions (particulates, NOx, and THC). By installing a HydraGEN ™ unit, the addition of the
higher flame rate hydrogen acts as a combustion catalyst, to burn most of the available diesel fuel earlier in the power stroke.
This results in increased power, increased torque, reduced fuel consumption, lower emissions, increased
oil life, a smoother, quieter, and cleaner running engine, and ultimately longer engine life!
WHAT HAPPENS TO MY ENGINE? – 2• Burning the available fuel faster at the top of the power stroke, generates more heat in less time. More
heat in less time means more pressure. Increased pressure pushes harder on the piston head, therefore
there’s an increase in TORQUE, or work produced by the piston. An increase (shift) in the TORQUE curve
means you get the same work out of the engine with fewer RPMs. The result: less fuel consumption and
greater power output per stroke!
• It may seem counter-intuitive, but in spite of the greater instantaneous heat generated, the overall
operating temperature of the engine is actually lower. This is because this heat energy is created in a
shorter time and is converted immediately into mechanical energy, before being exhausted. With less time
for the heat to conduct into the engine block and parts – the engine ultimately runs slightly cooler –
substantially increasing oil life.
• With the HIGHER INSTANTANEOUS COMBUSTION TEMPERATURE - the HydraGEN ™ equipped
engine will more completely consume the hydrocarbons in the fuel, reducing overall hydrocarbon
emissions (particulates).
• With HydraGEN ™ enabling FASTER and MORE COMPLETE COMBUSTION - the higher combustion
temperature is of such short duration that through the remainder of the power stroke and the entire
exhaust stroke, the engine will, on average, be much cooler. This means less NOx gases are produced.
• With a COOLER engine the mechanical efficiency of the overall combustion process is increased.
EMISSIONS REDUCTION• There are many different opinions about hydrogen-on-
demand systems. Some say it “can’t work” or that it violates
the first law of thermodynamics which states that “you can’t
get something from nothing” (conservation of energy). In fact,
the system is most certainly compliant with the Laws of
Physics and Nature. The additional energy captured from the
system’s use, comes primarily from the diesel fuel that would
have otherwise remained unburned, and not from burning the
hydrogen gas itself.
• Emission reductions exceed 44% for greenhouse gases and
greater than 65% reduction in particulates.
• By Continually altering the flow rates of hydrogen & oxygen in
response to engine load, HydraGEN™ results in an average
15.8% reduction in fuel consumption for actual open-road
load-hauling operations .
• These reductions have been validated thru both On-Road
and accredited 3rd party testing.
FUEL CONSUMPTION REDUCTION:INDEPENDENT TRACK AND OPEN ROAD TESTING
• HydraGEN spent more than 5 years in development and pre-production testing,
followed by 2 more years of track and open road testing by 3 independent bodies.
• Fuel Economy – Actual Open Road Tests: Several fleets of HydraGEN
equipped trucks were run over a period of 2 years by large operators
including Pepsi Co. These operators reported reductions in fuel
consumption of between 12% and 19.2%, with an overall average fuel
consumption reduction of 15.8%, on actual open road load-hauling
conditions.
• Fuel Economy – Laboratory Track Tests: The improvement in fuel economy
on an operational tractor-trailer will vary depending upon the average duty
cycle of the truck. Fuel economy is affected by load, terrain, weather, driver
habits, and other variables. To determine the absolute minimum
improvement in fuel economy possible, track tests were conducted by PIT
group (www.thepitgroup.com) under ideal conditions (operating tractor on a
dry, flat 4km oval track with no grades, no banked turns, and no wind, while
eliminating driver behavior variables). After numerous test cycles at the
most fuel-efficient speed of 105kph for a 100 km run, the minimum
reduction in fuel consumption achieved on an unloaded tractor by the
HydraGEN system was 5.9%.
Tractor-Trailers: 12% to 19%
reduction in fuel consumption
Reefers: More than 23%
reduction in fuel consumption
Refrigerated Reefer – HG-2
• The HydraGEN HG-2 unit designed for reefers and other small diesel engines (up to
2.5L displacement) completed performance validation testing in December, 2017.
The HG-2 unit is appropriate for installation on Refrigerated Reefers, Class 4 - 7 fixed-body
delivery trucks, city transit buses, and School Buses, and a broad range of other applications
for diesel engines with displacements of up to 5 liters.
• Fuel Consumption from 4.6 lb/hr to 3.5 lb/hr 24% reduction
