A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTORBig thanks to our class instructors: Abi Mason, Amber Ferguson, Elea Pulliam, Cari

Pulliam, Kaylee Bailey, and Maranda Nichols. Without their expertise and willingness,

the beautiful choreography in this show wouldn’t have been possible.

I would like to off er a special thanks to my friend, band director, and guitar player

Doug Maglothin. This idea was hatched back in May and since then and has taken

much collaboration and communication during the work day, late nights and

weekends. While we are on the subject, Doug and I both would like to thank our

beautiful wives for allowing us to “get the band back together” and revisit the glory

days that is making beautiful music and art. It is only through their contribution in

pulling up the slack at home that allows us to take part in this project.

While I am on the subject, my wife Stephanie and daughter Alexandra volunteered to

take on the costuming of the show. I don’t think they knew what they were signing up

for. It has been a monumental task. But they have delivered in style. From the dance

costumes to the Grinch attire and the special eff ects of our pint-sized elf, many

of these pieces had to be original creations. Alexandra along with Eva Barret have

rounded off the task by learning how to apply the special grinch make-up that looked

so amazing.

Kenny Fields and JR Lawrence always deserve a thanks for all these FOA

shows. You can’t take the stage without a technical crew. When you see something or

hear something, a technician made it happen with lights and sound. With 35 vocalists,

8 instrumentalists, and 30 dancers, there was a ton of technical work required.

These two men were driven and diligent in creating the tech for this show. They were

helpful and patient in their guidance to educate me about what could and couldn’t be

accomplished. They are deeply appreciated.

Another big thanks goes out to the band. This show is a monster when it comes to

music. Doug, JR, Justin, Randy, Garrick, Drew and Emily have all worked hard to make

this happen. Their show run started a full month prior to the rest of the cast. Thank

you band!

I didn’t forget the violinist. Her name is Marsha and she is my mother. She hasn’t

played since high school and spent many, many hours practicing to get ready for

this show. What an amazing thing! It takes a lot of courage to dust off an instrument

that has been in a case for even a few years and get ready for a professional quality

performance. And that violin has been in the case for a few years. And thanks to my

father who spent hours helping to build the set and transporting all of the Christmas

decorations….as well as listening to my mom practice her violin. They have both

modeled a ‘can do’ attitude and work ethic. Even when we are learning and applying

something new…’can do’ gets it done.

To my assistant director Ed Salo, thank you for your tireless work and assistance in

getting this done. You remembered things I forgot. You helped me think of things

I didn’t think of. And you kept me sane and cheerful with your positive attitude and

sense of humor. Thank you.

To my students (you know who you are): Words fail me. I am so proud of you. You were

so little when we started this together. I don’t think you can understand what a

pleasure it is to have worked with you over the last fi ve years and arrive at point

where we are performing together. I would say performing together as equals, but

many of you are passing me by. This is a beautiful thing as well. If I have given you

the love and joy of blending your voices together with another soul, I am happy. I look

forward to singing with you again.

The collaboration of all of the above is the fi nest examples of what community theater

is and why it needs to be valued, cherished, and protected. Do you want to learn a new

art, talent, or skill? Do you want to have a reason to pick up an old instrument again?

Did you perform, play, sing or create in high school or college and wish you could

again? Do you want to create something? Do you want to meet new people and build

something together that you can be proud of? Then show up and invest your time and

money into local community theater at the Foundation of Arts.

A HEART FOR THE ARTSOn behalf of the over 500 volunteers who have worked this year to make the FOA mission happen...

And on behalf of the over 20,000 patrons this year who attended the programming and rentals available to the community...

And on behalf of the 125 fi nancial stakeholders who support the mission and outreach programming for those who may not be able to aff ord quality arts programming on their own...

I want to take this opportunity to tell you a short version of a long and of course dramatic story featuring what I believe to be a jewel in the crown of Northeast Arkansas.

33 years ago some visionary and hardworking community leaders envisioned an organization that would be foundational to all of the arts in the area. Th ey wanted the FOA to be a welcoming home for artists to teach and learn, to perform and create visual art, and to work professionally and as volunteers. Th ey envisioned the FOA to be a front porch for our community — a place where we can laugh and consider new ideas together as people who understand the social, cultural, and economic value of the arts as a pillar for every quality community.

Over the past 33 years, the FOA’s dramatic story has experienced growing pains and growth spurts. It has been my privilege to witness growing numbers of people — more than ever of late— who believe in the mission and heart of the FOA’s message: that the arts should be excellent and also accessible. Th at vision for all artists and citizens who value “excellence and accessibility of the arts” to unify us in a welcoming home is still strong and fl ourishing today with growing numbers of people and interest. Th e future is bright for the arts and mission of the FOA!

In fact, this crown jewel of the arts in Northeast Arkansas has served 52000 patrons, 7200 students and 6900 volunteers since 1986.

All along, the City of Jonesboro has recognized the vision of thosefounders over 33 years ago by supporting this old, wonderful theater as one place where the FOA serves the community. But now, even more than ever, the City of Jonesboro and Mayor Perrin share the vision with the FOA that our community not only deserves, but requires, a greater focus on quality of life that only arts programming that is excellent and accessible can deliver. Research and our own lives attest to how the arts change entire communities, one person and one experience at a time. Both culturally and economically, the FOA stands as the unifying bond of all artists and art lovers – young and old, amateur or professional, every race, color, and creed. Because on some level, we are all artists, created to create.

And the perfect partnership to support each other in serving thiscommunity through the arts is the collaboration between the FOAand the City of Jonesboro.

But the Foundation of Arts and the City of Jonesboro are not fi nished with this lovely and historic building. In fact, the Auditorium Commission, chosen by Mayor Perrin, has just begun to plan for bigger things to come in the future. Many vital discussions have taken place lately by the Commissioners and also by the FOA Board of Directors. Questions like, “What is the experience of every person who walks through these doors?” and “What is most important for the arts here in Jonesboro?” and more are explored frequently here. You see, there are also visionaries in Jonesboro, today, planning and working toward a better future for our children and the thousands who will surely visit and even live in Jonesboro in years to come because of the work in these times.

Th ank you, FOA Board of Directors and Auditorium Commissionand all other FOA committee members for working and planningfor the future of our community. Th is beautiful old theater thatlinks our past, present, and future through the lustrouscommunity jewel, the Foundation of Arts, thanks you, too.

• Serve at least 500 families per week through arts education, theatre, and outreach activities

• Off er community theatre with ten diff erent productions per year including The Nutcracker Ballet, musical theatre, and children’s theatre

• Stand alone as an arts organization in Northeast Arkansas that provides live theatre at relatively low ticket prices for thousands of patrons each year—and a Pay What You Can performance for each show so that everyone can grow from live theatre

• Work with adults and children with disabilities through the arts, allowing them the opportunity to perform annually on stage

• Bring an annual count of 55,000 trips into downtown Jonesboro for our community

• Need your support—ticket sales and class tuition support only about half of what it takes to serve Northeast Arkansas and the more than 20,000 people we positively aff ect annually
