Notes ON THE PROGRAM

GREG GILPIN All My Heart Shall Sing with Joy! Born in 1964(3 minutes)

This premiere original work is dedi-cated to Crowley ISD Honor Choir anddirector and friend Kathy Chiles, whoall are a significant part of this evening’sconcert. One of the composer’s goalswhen working with choirs of all ages is

to sing with joy! The celebratory text isset to energetic accompaniment. Thecontrasting middle section expresses,“There is music in each one of us. Hearit all around. Every color, every hue, alla part of you. We’re a work of art!”

GILPIN Dance, Love, Sing, Live! (3 minutes)

Our theme for this evening’s concertsings the well-loved words, “Dance asthough no one is watching you. Loveas though no one has hurt you. Sing asthough no one can hear you. Live asthough heaven’s on earth.” Beginning

with the gentle request of “open youreyes,” this inspirational setting bloomsand grows into the second sectionwhich dances with percussion andflute leading to the full sonorities ofthe ending.

Notes by Greg Gilpin

arr. GILPIN Shut De Do (2 minutes)

Randy Stonehill’s familiar and well-known song sounds and feels as if it hasalways been a part of the folk song orspiritual genre. This a cappella settinguses percussion to create the mysterious

yet inviting call to “shut de do, keepout the devil.” Within the repetitionthere are solos, key changes, and a cre-ative B section, building to a soaringfinish of “shut de do.”

arr. GILPIN Tongo (2 minutes)

“Tongo” is a traditional Polynesian folksong depicting people in different longboats communicating over water as theytravel between islands. Tongo means“mangrove” in Polynesian. This arrange-ment respects the original echo-style

performance of the piece or “back andforth” between boats. The percussionadds the energy found in the rowingand sound of water with the choiradding movement to mimic the move-ment of rowing.

arr. GILPIN Tafta Hindi (2 minutes)

Fun, bright, and flirtatious is this Mid-dle Eastern folk song! The text, in clas-sic Arabic, tells the story of a travelingsalesman selling Indian muslin, taffeta,

and other pretty material and wares forwomen to purchase as he uses hischarms to convince pretty young ladiesto buy, buy, buy.

GILPIN The Beginning of Love (3 minutes)

Selected quotes of Mother Theresa arewoven together to create a stunning lyricof love and compassion. With melodyand harmony weaving above the flow-ing piano accompaniment and simple

and emotional violin, Mother Theresa’swords, “Let us always greet each otherwith a smile for a smile is the beginningof love,” teaches us the simplicity of livingand the impact it can have on our world.

GILPIN Why We Sing (3 minutes)

“A sound of hope, a sound of peace, asound that celebrates and speaks whatwe believe. A sound of love, a sound sostrong. It’s amazing what is given whenwe share a song. This is why wesing….” This inspirational choral work

has been sung by thousands around theworld. Its inspirational message contin-ues to ring true and strong, bringinghearts together celebrating how musiccan build bridges and tear down walls.Music truly “speaks to one and all.”

arr. GILPIN Y’All Come (2 minutes)

From the early country radio stations toI Love Lucy to even now! This littlegem is our encore for you tonight. “Whenyou live in the country everybody isyour neighbor on this one thing you can

rely….” A salute from the folks downour way, wishing you all the best and tocome see us soon. Just a little Southernhospitality to our New York City friends!“Y’all come back now, ya hear?”

ANDRÉ THOMAS I Hear America Singing Born in 1952(3 minutes)

The opening number of this evening’sconcert was the very first commission

conducted by Dr. Anton Armstrong, theconductor of the St. Olaf Choir. In thissetting Thomas uses the initial line oftext from Walt Whitman’s poem “I

Hear America Singing.” Thomas thenincorporates the spiritual Walk TogetherChildren. Walt Whitman is indeed oneof Thomas’ favorite poets.

THOMAS Keep Your Lamps (2 minutes)

The earliest choral work on thisevening’s concert is Keep Your Lamps—first published in 1982. Audiences andchoirs never tire of this very simple set-ting of the Afro-American slave song, which represents the slaves’ impressionof this version of the parable of thewise and foolish found in the book of

Matthew, chapter 25. For the slave, the expectation of the bridegroom(the Savior) also represented theirhope for a savior to help them toescape slavery. This year, in celebra-tion of the 35th year of Keep YourLamps, Thomas has created a versionfor male voices.

THOMAS Goin’ Up to Glory (3 minutes)

In the setting Goin’ Up to Glory,Thomas paints the emotions of the

slaves as they wish for a better life anda dream of heaven.

THOMAS Beautiful City (3 minutes)

Similar to Goin’ Up to Glory, BeautifulCity also portrays the life of slaves as

their emotions express desires for im -proved livelihood.

THOMAS I Dream a World (3 minutes)

Another favorite of Thomas’ is LangstonHughes, perhaps the most famous poet ofthe Harlem Renaissance. Thomas createsa musical setting of the poem “I Dream a

World” by Langston Hughes. This beau-tiful setting was dedicated to the “Soulswho lost their lives in the felling of theWorld Trade Center buildings on 9/11.”

THOMAS Gloria (3 minutes)

The second commission from theNational American Choral DirectorsAssociation was the setting of Gloria,

which is the second movement of theGospel Mass that Thomas is writing. This work was premiered at the

National Convention of the AmericanChoral Directors Association in 2015

in Salt Lake City, Utah, with a 300-voice choir and Thomas conducting.

THOMAS Someday Is Today (4 minutes)

Like Langston Hughes, Thomas con-tinues to dream of a better world, butalso feels that each one of us has theobligation to contribute to making the

world better. In Someday Is Today heturns to the powerful words of poetNeil Lorenz, who beautifully expressesthat thought.

THOMAS Credo (5 minutes)

The third movement of Thomas’Gospel Mass, Credo, was commis-sioned by Choirs of America and waspremiered here at Carnegie Hall in

2016. The colorful orchestrations ofThomas’ choral works are created byaward-winning film orchestratorRobert Elhai.
