Director Notes At a time when the world around us seems to be in chaos, and we are not quite sure what to feel or what to believe in, along comes a comedy about chaos, bad judgment, and misplaced feelings. New York Water shines a spotlight on our need to make a connection with someone who will understand us, try to make us feel whole, and accept us for who we truly are. Having said that, Sam Bobrick’s play reveals to us, how desperate we are to find love and to what extent we will go to insure that the love we find gives us peace and happiness. Unfortunately, peace and happiness is a hard commodity to get your hands on. We will blind ourselves to the truth, lie to each other about everything and anything meaningful, and above all, we will go to the ends of the earth to search for it. Only to find out it was right in front of us all the time. As a great comedy writer once said, ”You can’t live with it and you can’t live without it, but if I knew what it was, I’d sell it and buy a Chevy”

- Howard Teichman

HOWARD TEICHMAN (Artistic Director / Director / Producer) As the Artistic Director for the West Coast Jewish Theatre, Howard has dedicated his life in the theatre to bringing Jewish thematic plays to the second largest Jewish community in the United States. Mr. Teichman’s last show was his long awaited production of Steven G. Simon and Howard Teichman’s “FUGU”. The play received numerous exemplary reviews from many news outlets throughout Los Angeles. His last production performed in 2015 was Hindi Brooks’ “ROMANCE.COM”. The show was a true crowd pleaser. In 2014, Howard produced and directed Matthew Lopez’s “The Whipping Man” which garnered an “O RECOMMENDED” by The Los Angeles Stage Alliance and was “Critic’s Pick” in numerous media outlets throughout the Los Angeles area including the LA Weekly and the LA Times. His production in 2013 of Herb Gardner’s “I’m Not Rappaport” was met with delight by all our audiences. In 2012 his production Mark Harelik’s “The Immigrant the Musical” was nominated for an Ovation award for best lead actor in a musical and also that year Howard produced David Ives’ “New Jerusalem: The Interrogation of Baruch de Spinoza at Talmud Torah Congregation: Amsterdam, July 27, 1656”. That production was a West Coast Premiere and was nominated for a Los Angeles Drama Circle Desk Award for lead actor and play. Both productions were received most favorably by both audiences and critics alike. Howard also produced a Los Angeles Premiere of James Sherman’s “The God of Isaac”. This show was quite a crowd pleaser. Howard’s production that he directed and co-produced with Theatre 40 and West Coast Jewish Theatre was Murray Schisgal’s “LUV”. The production garnered a Critic’s Pick in Back Stage West and for his efforts received a Best Director award from the Beverly Hills Outlook for 2011. Earlier in 2011, Howard produced for the West Coast Jewish Theatre the critically successful and “O RECOMMENDED” by The Los Angeles Stage Alliance “Broken Glass” by Arthur Miller. During the 2009-2010 season as Producer/Artistic Director for the West Coast Jewish Theatre, Howard produced and directed to critical acclaim and review Neil Simon’s “Last of the Red Hot Lovers”, Daniel Goldfarb’s “Sarah Sarah”, and Jeffrey Sweet’s “The Value of Names” all at the Pico Playhouse. In 2008, Howard independently produced and directed another one of James Sherman’s plays “From Door to Door” at the Electric Lodge. Howard has also directed such successful productions as; Neil Simon’s “Lost in Yonkers” and “Rumors”, Daniel Goldfarb’s “Modern Orthodox”, for which Howard was nominated, best comedy director by The L.A. Weekly. Howard Teichman’s “Simcha” for which he wrote, directed, and performed received a Back

Stage West Critics Pick, Howard Teichmann’s “Solid Gold Cadillac”, and Leon Katz’s “The Three Cuckolds”, for which he received a Los Angeles Times Critics Pick. As a Master’s student at UCLA’s Theater Department, Howard had the great privilege of being a producing intern at the Mark Taper Forum for Gordon Davidson and worked on the Tony Award winning production of George C. Wolfe’s, “Jelly’s Last Jam”, other productions include; “A Little Night Music” at the Doolittle and Jeremy Lawrence’s “Cabaret: Verbotten” at the Itchy Foot. Born in Toronto, Canada, he then moved to Chicago. While in Chicago, Howard became a member of the prestigious “Second City” improvisational troupe where Howard wrote and performed an original play called “Commedia” and was an assistant to the director on the original production of David Mamet’s “Duck Variations”. Howard holds a B.A. and M.F.A in Theatre from UCLA. Sam Bobrick (Playwright) Born in Chicago and graduated from the University of Illinois, Sam Bobrick made his way to New York where he began his career as a songwriter. His first song THE GIRL OF MY BEST FRIEND was recorded by Elvis Presley. Although he has been recorded by artists such as Brian Ferry and Los Lobos, his favorite music endeavor still remains the two Rock 'n' Roll albums he wrote for MAD Magazine, MAD TWISTS ROCK 'n' ROLL and FINK ALONG WITH MAD which have become collector's items since no one knows where the hell the master tapes are. Luckily Sam drifted into the world of TV, some of credits include: CAPTAIN KANGAROO, THE FLINTSTONES, THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW, GET SMART, BEWITCHED, THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR and SAVED BY THE BELL which he created. For his work in TV he has received three Writers Guild Awards and an Emmy nomination. It was while doing THE KRAFT MUSIC HALL in the late 1960’s in New York that Sam got involved with theatre, co-writing his first play, NORMAN, IS THAT YOU? with Ron Clark. He then went on to write and co-write over forty plays, 24 of them published by Samuel French and performed throughout the world, including MURDER AT THE HOWARD JOHNSON’S, WEEKEND COMEDY, BAGGAGE, THE CRAZY TIME, GETTING SARA MARRIED and HAMLET II (Better Than the Original). Mr. Bobrick doctored the book for the original Broadway production of THE WIZ. In 2011, Sam won the coveted Edgar award for his play THE PYSCHIC. This year a number of his plays have been performed in Russia, Turkey, Germany and the Czech Republic. Sam is married to writer Julie Stein with whom he wrote two plays, THE OUTRAGEOUS ADVENTURES OF SHELDON & MRS LEVINE and LENNY'S BACK, a one man show about legendary comedian Lenny Bruce which was nominated for an Ovation award (L.A.’s Tony) and was recently optioned for a production in Sweden. He has 3 married children and two amazing grandchildren who will save the world with their kind and beautiful hearts. Sam is a member of the Dramatists Guild of America and The Writers Guild of America. And oh, yes he is still alive and still continuing to write. Please visit sambobrick.com.

Bill Froggatt (Associate Producer / Sound Designer / Video Projection) In the past decade, Bill has been involved with over sixty plays in theatres throughout the Southern California area. He’s learned a lot and is proud to have made contributions as producer, stage manager, sound designer and graphic designer. He finds one thrill of theatre is to work with like-minded creative people: producers, directors, performers, designers and others. Another exciting part of theatre is to see a production evolve from an idea to a script, to a complete show and also to witness an audience moved by the play’s drama or comedy. Henry Lide (Stage Manager) It was a circuitous route that brought Henry to Los Angeles, involving major detours through, among others, Atlanta; Detroit; Ft. Peck, Montana; and a couple of children’s-theater tours up and down the eastern seaboard. Since arriving in these environs some twenty-odd years ago, he has busied himself as a house-sitter, a sales clerk (the late, lamented Borders), a stage manager (four years at Will Geer’s Theatricum Botanicum), about a dozen shows at Theatre 40 and, occasionally, an actor (nothing you’ve probably seen). New York Water is his first work in the theater since, literally, he can’t remember when. Kurtis Bedford (Set Designer) Kurtis is an actor, designer, general contractor and master carpenter. He has designed and built scenery and props for numerous plays, television and feature film projects as well as for museums and universities. Previously he designed and built sets for West Coast Jewish Theater's productions of Fugu, Romance.com, Oh My God, The Whipping Man, I’m Not Rappaport, God of Isaac and The Immigrants – The Musical. He has also been involved as a designer/builder for the last four seasons of Unbound Productions yearly spectacle Wicked Lit, as well as work for many other theater companies. His acting work can be seen in over 40 television commercials as well as many TV shows including a recurring role on HBO's Getting On. Ellen Monocroussos (Lighting Designer) Ellen has designed the lighting for hundreds of shows nationwide and collaborated with director Howard Teichman on Fugu, Romance.com, The Whipping Man, I’m Not Rappaport, Last of the Red Hot Lovers and Value of Names with WCJT, and The Sunshine Boys, Rumors and Luv with Theatre 40. Other shows include: Walking to Buchenwald with Open Fist Theatre Company, The Exonerated with The Actors’ Gang, The Invisible Play with Theatre of Note, Hotel C’est L’Amour with Blank Theatre Company, and Mother Courage and Her Children with Antaeus Company. She was an Assistant Lighting Designer on Walt Disney Imagineering’s Tokyo DisneySea theme park and Legoland theme park. She has won awards from LA Weekly and Stage Scene LA and has been nominated for an Ovation Award, NAACP Award and a Lester Horton Dance Award. Phil Sokoloff (Publicity) Mr. Sokoloff is L.A.'s most active theatrical publicist, representing over 100 live attractions and three dozen independent films annually. Also an actor, he appears in the recent feature film release The Bandit Hound.

Michael Lamont (Photographer) Michael began his career shooting headshots, and soon expanded into shooting theatre production, unit and publicity for the studios. As Director of Photography he has shot independent features, shorts and pilots. From his studio, he continues to shoot celebrity portraits, CD covers, posters, marketing, publicity and production video. He is the production staff photographer and videographer for many theatres in the LA area. www.michaellamont.com
