INTRODUCTION

A ROADWAY CONDITION SURVEY IS DONE BY VISUAL

INSPECTION OF A ROADWAY. A ROADWAY CONDITION SURVEY IS

THE PROCESS OF COLLECTING DATA TO DETERMINE THE

STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY, DISTRESSES, SKID RESISTANCE, AND

OVERALL RIDING QUALITY OF THE PAVEMENT.

Page 6: Presentration 2

OBJECTIVE OF STUDY

To draw detailed layout of roadway and intersection.

For qualitative observation of potholes, elevated

or depressed manholes, speed breakers etc.

To determine loss of effective width at different

locations due to loading or unloading, illegal

parking, construction utility etc.

MANUAL METHOD

WALKING SURVEY

• Done by walking down by the side of

the pavement by a group of people.

• Provides the most correct data.

• Time consuming.

ABDULLAH RECORDING DATA

Page 10: Presentration 2

WINDSHIELD SURVEY

• Systematic observation is made from a moving vehicle.

• Useful when particular section of road segment is observed.

• Time saving.

Survey process by Windshield method

Page 11: Presentration 2

WALKING AND WINDSHIELD SURVEY

• Better method than the

single application.

• Achieve maximum

pavement data and

complete pavement

surveys.

• Require both technological and human activity.

Picture of walking and wind shield survey

Page 12: Presentration 2

AUTOMATIC METHOD

VIDEO CAMERA

• Observe service

condition.

• Generally attached on

the post in the street.

• Doesn’t work at night.

Page 13: Presentration 2

AUTOMATED ROAD ANALYZER

• Technically complex vehicle.

• Attached with sensor machine.

• Take photo as well as distance.

Road side land-use pattern

The roadside land use pattern is highly dense with commercially developed area including Bank,

Hospital , School, Market, Shopping Mall, Showrooms etc. in the range of 2 storied up to 24 storied.

Pedestrians Crossing Facilities

Opening Median

Due to facilitate the pedestrian crossing, opening was

provided on top of the median at some intervals in

the mid block section. Near panthapath signal median

height was found to be approximately 20 inch. For

facilate as a pedestrian refuge ,this height was

reduced to 4-5 inch.

Page 32: Presentration 2

• Pedestrian Refuge

Besides near intersection and opening of the road, to facilitate the pedestrian crossing, pedestrian refuge was provided.

Location & Types of Traffic Control Device

Road Sign & Marking

Sign :Traffic signs or road signs are signs erected at the side or above roads to give instructions or provide information to road users. In our survey road we found sings in both intersection.

Page 34: Presentration 2

MarkingTypes of marking

Centre Line, Pavement Edge Lines, Stop Line, Pedestrian Crossings, Word Marking/Message, Divisional Arrow

Page 35: Presentration 2

• Signal

Traffic signs control the flow of traffic, warn you of hazards ahead, guide you to

your destination, and inform you of roadway services.

Location of Bottleneck Due to indiscriminate bus stopping/Stand in both intersection bottleneck is

arises

Page 45: Presentration 2

Due to Littering-car parking through the roadway bottleneck causes though the roadway

At side roads opening bottleneck causes

Page 46: Presentration 2

Para transit & NMV activities in front of commercial centers like Hospital, Shopping mall and also opening of side roads Bottleneck creates.

Page 47: Presentration 2

Due to cracking of edge road bottle neck also arises.

Page 48: Presentration 2

Road Light Alignment

Sodium light layout system mostly common in Dhaka city. The clear distance

between two street lights post or lamp post are approximately 100 feet. Total number of street light found was 33.Through the roadway

We also found some Solar panel

Light System which may provided by

Sponsor's in front of Square Hospital.

Some other obstruction on the main road are indiscriminate goods loading and unloading on the road, disturbed traffic flow due to non motorized vehicles entrance like rickshaw, van, cycle and presence dustbin on the road. It should be must monitored

Loading or unloading goods Non motorized vehicle Dustbin blocks almost one road lane

Page 52: Presentration 2

Erased road marks at intersections at channel head, Line Division, and pedestrian crossing & Leder crossing signs are erased, invisible traffic signal can create problem. They must be monitored

At intersections the Ghost islands are blocked or not facilities the pedestrian and its head are broken

Page 54: Presentration 2

Road sign’s are covered by poster or erased and broken or disable street lights are present in roadway . Some V-notch’s are broken & V-notch sign & marking are erased

Covered & Erased Sign & Slotted Sign Unmarked V-Notch

Page 55: Presentration 2

Surface condition of the road is not fair enough due to various kinds of road cracking which decreases the skid resistances of the road and of the road way

fatigue crack Ravelling

Page 56: Presentration 2

Page 57: Presentration 2

RECOMMENDATIONS

The surface of roadway was not good enough and the medians were not geometrically right. The marks on the road were invisible. So our recommendation is that we should be careful about regular maintenance of road to avoid unwanted incidents such as accidents.

The signs we observed on the roadway were old and not only covered by posters but also broken. So replacing these old sign plates with new ones is highly recommended.

We found different kind of small shops on the footpath or shoulder. So it is recommended that Dhaka City Corporation should take essential step to clear the footpath so that pedestrian can move easily.

There were no facilities for blind people ,people who use wheelchair and people who are not normal. So extra facilities for these people are recommended.
