What is personal branding? Should I work on personal branding? What determines effective brand building? If you would like to know the answers to such questions come to our next general meeting and hear our guest speaker

Women entrepreneurs

Tom Jones, who is head of Marketing for Region Europe from Novartis.

Building a personal brand or image is a process which requires determi‐nation and responsibility. It should not destroy our career but rather encourage and support its development.

Warren Buffett, probably the most famous stock market, said: building of reputation takes twenty years but it takes only 5 minutes to ruin it. When you think about it you should be encouraged to act differently.

If you would like to learn how to influence the way others see you, you are welcome to join us.

We are very excited to present the next in our "Inside Out" series for Women Entrepre‐neurs. Our guest speaker will be Anh Huynh, a Fashion Coach (www.dress-best.com).

What you wear is one of our most obvious outside signs. But is what we wear and how we wear it really an expression of who we are

as individual Women Entre‐preneurs, representing our‐selves in our businesses? And how do we find clothes we love and which love us back for who we are?! Fashion Coach Anh will lead us as we explore how to present our‐selves from the Inside Out.

Please join us on this fun and inspiring work‐shop. You'll leave with some concrete ideas and perhaps inspired to give your wardrobe a little shake up this season!

We’re here to support each other, share what works, and help each other build our businesses here. And, most importantly, to have fun while we’re doing it! Our pur‐pose is to:

Create an open and positive environment where women entrepreneurs can build productive and supportive friendships and business relationships,

Facilitate opportunities for personal and profession‐al development for women entrepreneurs,

Promote the success of a dynamic community of active business women.

The Women Entrepreneurs (WE) group welcomes women with their own businesses AND women who are considering the idea. We have a range of businesses represented, some large and some very small – some long established and others only just starting up.

The Women Entrepreneur’s Steering Team (WEST) consists of

Payments to the PWG

The PWG has always been a dynamic group - both in the sense of women coming and going, and also the way we work together. We enjoy welcoming new starters - indeed newcomers to Basel - as well as those who are more established here.

Our international mix also makes for some fascinating cultural con‐nections, and our various professional backgrounds and aspirations provoke stimulating conversations. However long you stay a mem‐ber for (and we hope it is a long time, of course!), you still have the opportunity to make your own contribution to the development of our organization. You bring skills, experiences and approaches which we can all learn from. If you feel you could make a contribu‐tion to our work – whether presenting, supporting, coordinating, welcoming, planning, writing, or even reading – please just contact either Jeanne Heinzer or Kirstin Barton through the PWG Web‐site. We look forward to hearing from you.

Our Dynamic Group – Can You Help?

At the beginning of our meetings we have a sign in sheet for Mem‐bers and another for Guests (everyone else, including if you have not paid your annual membership fee). All guests pay a CHF15 fee to attend. Members can collect their badge from the table, and guests can write their names onto a temporary badge.

At the end of the meeting, please return your badge and your com‐pleted feedback sheet, if this has been circulated.

At both meetings, we have a 30 minute time for gathering and Apéro before the meeting starts, then we aim to start promptly at the advertised time. If you come late, please sign in as usual and join the group discreetly!

At both meetings, there is time for more socializing and network‐ing over Apéro at the end.

Warning!! You may meet some interesting ladies you want to keep in touch with – remember your business or contact cards!

We welcome any feedback which helps our events run smoothly.

The Membership team would like to say thank you for your rapid response to our final reminder for membership payment last month. PWG as a group can only continue to develop our programme and activities with your ongoing support, and we are delighted to report that we now have around 120 confirmed mem‐bers.

Later in April, we will be doing some work to clear up our member‐ship database (which is now based on the website records), and to take off those who no longer wish to be annual members of the PWG.

For those not continuing their annual membership:

If you have not paid for 2012, by the end of April we aim to have removed your name from our website records, so you would then not receive your normal communications from the PWG. You are, of course, still very welcome to attend our events by paying the guest fee, and you can always check out the web calendar for our future events.

We appreciate the contribution and participation of all women who've been part of the development of PWG over the past 21 years, and hope you have enjoyed your time with us. We hope you can join us again sometime in the future. THANK YOU!

WE Announcements

Women Entrepreneurs: contact file for Expat Expo and Cen-trepoint:

We have a file containing business cards for Women Entrepreneurs, which PWG will showcase at the Expat Expo on Sunday, 3 June. It will also be held at Centrepoint for visitors to look through. Any Woman Entrepreneur who would like to be included should give her business card to Kirstin Barton at the next WE meeting or at the April PWG meeting.

Women Entrepreneurs’ details on PWG Website:

All Women Entrepreneurs are welcome to include a short sentence highlighting their business on our website. Please send Kirstin Bar‐ton any text you would like to include plus a website address or email address. Check out the profiles already online for some guid‐ance.

PWG Bulletin Board:

The Bulletin Board forum on the PWG website is a great place to advertise your events, services and business. Please check it out and start using it if you can.

Member announcements:

At our Monthly PWG meetings, we will start to give three or four members the opportunity to make short announcements to the group before the meeting starts. This is a great way of highlighting your business – and will give you good practice at presenting briefly and with a 'hook'. Why not give it a go at the next meeting.

And finally….

If you have not already registered on the PWG website, please do so. This will soon become the only way of communicating with our members. And, if you have not yet paid your membership, you can do this in cash at the next PWG or WE meeting.

A highly interactive workshop “The Body-Mind Connection“ led by Valerie Villiger-McNeill, was PWG’s main event on the evening of March 20th, 2012.

Valerie is a professional coach and also an entrepreneur. Her pas‐sion and vitality combined with a group of around thirty PWG members resulted in the workshop where we had learned about five dispositions for powerful presence.

Valerie shared her experiences in work and personal life, before and after she gained her first intensive experience of the five body dispositions for action, as part her training at the Newfield Net‐work – http://www.newfieldnetwork.com.

The powerful concepts in the workshop invoked discussion in groups about our feelings and observations as we all practiced moving our bodies and focused our minds from being “centred” to moving in and out of each of the five body dispositions for “action”.

All agreed at the end of the evening that we were revitalized with a new awareness of the connectedness of physical, mental, and of our emotional body and we had taken these newly learnt skills to use both at our work and in personal lives. Thank you Valerie!

Members Forum —1943 Guide to Hiring Women

March's New Members' Apéro saw 8 new PWG members join Dawn Voyce (ex-Vice Chair) and Kirstin Barton (current Vice Chair) over drinks in Barfusserplatz. These events are organised every 2-3 months to enable new members to meet in a purely social envi‐ronment, and to make it easy to find out more about the PWG.

As ladies arrived, we got to introduce ourselves several times (always good practice!!) and had a switch around of seats part way through to make sure everyone had a chance to connect with everyone else.

This was a fun event – and also successful from the point of view of having two new volunteers to help on our Monthly Main Events – many thanks to Cecilia and to Sharon.

We've had a good number of new members recently, and we wel‐come all newcomers – even if not named above. We hope to see you at a PWG event very soon.

Newcomers Coffee and New Members Apéro – there will be an‐other morning coffee and separately, an evening Apéro organised for new members later in the spring – these events are always open to brand new members, and those of you who might still feel a little new in our group.

More details in Communique next month . . .

NEW MEMBERS‘

APéRO

The following is an excerpt from the July 1943 issue of Transporta‐tion Magazine. This was written for male supervisors of women in the workforce during World War II.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

"Eleven Tips on Getting More Efficiency Out of Women Employ‐ees: There's no longer any question whether transit companies should hire women for jobs formerly held by men. The draft and manpower shortage has settled that point. The important things now are to select the most efficient women available and how to use them to the best advantage.

Here are eleven helpful tips on the subject from Western Proper‐ties:

1. Pick young married women. They usually have more of a sense of responsibility than their unmarried sisters, they're less likely to be flirtatious, they need the work or they wouldn't be doing it, they still have the pep and interest to work hard and to deal with the public efficiently.

2. When you have to use older women, try to get ones who have worked outside the home at some time in their lives. Older women who have never contacted the public have a hard time adapting themselves and are inclined to be can‐tankerous and fussy. It's always well to impress upon older women the importance of friendliness and courtesy.

3. General experience indicates that "husky" girls – those who are just a little on the heavy side – are more even tempered and efficient than their underweight sisters.

4. Retain a physician to give each woman you hire a special physical examination – one covering female conditions. This step not only protects the property against the possibilities of lawsuit, but reveals whether the employee-to-be has any female weaknesses which would make her mentally or phys‐ically unfit for the job.

5. Stress at the outset the importance of time the fact that a minute or two lost here and there makes serious inroads on schedules. Until this point is gotten across, service is likely to be slowed up.

6. Give the female employee a definite day-long schedule of duties so that they'll keep busy without bothering the man‐agement for instructions every few minutes. Numerous properties say that women make excellent workers when they have their jobs cut out for them, but that they lack initiative in finding work themselves.

7. Whenever possible, let the inside employee change from one job to another at some time during the day. Women are inclined to be less nervous and happier with change.

8. Give every girl an adequate number of rest periods during the day. You have to make some allowances for feminine psychology. A girl has more confidence and is more effi‐cient if she can keep her hair tidied, apply fresh lipstick and wash her hands several times a day.

9. Be tactful when issuing instructions or in making criticisms. Women are often sensitive; they can't shrug off harsh words the way men do. Never ridicule a woman – it breaks her spirit and cuts off her efficiency.

10. Be reasonably considerate about using strong language around women. Even though a girl's husband or father may swear vociferously, she'll grow to dislike a place of business where she hears too much of this.

11. Get enough size variety in operator's uniforms so that each girl can have a proper fit. This point can't be stressed too much in keeping women happy."

Focus on Career Workshop

On the 15th of March, 2012, The Focus on Career group had or‐ganised an evening workshop to facilitate discussion for those ladies who are on a lookout for new job opportunities. It was a very successful event and a Centrepoint li‐brary was filled out to it’s capacity.

We were pleased to welcome our two guest speakers from Stamford Consultants (www.stamford-consultants.com), an agen‐cy specializing in recruitment of Life Science, Information Technol‐ogy and Finance professionals.

Demba Sidibe and Daria Beknazariants, generously shared many helpful tips on how to search for a job and answered questions.

This workshop has provided us with a lot of input material to dis‐cuss further at the Job Hunt support group, as it is important to remember that not every situation fits a specific mould and you have to really think and evaluate your experiences for yourself in order to apply learnings thoughtfully!
