The Handbook – 5 Top Tips to successfully navigate this necessary evil!

1. Always refer to the

2017 version of the

handbook – unless

you change degrees

Page 7: Presenters - UNSW Business School · 1/5 WC 8/5 WC 15/5 WC 22/5 WC 29/5 ... FINS3616 +4 electives Accounting major Business ... Bob diligently takes notes in class and from the recommended

2. The Jargon

– Units of Credit UOC:

The “currency” of your degree; each course has a “value”, typically 6 UOC.

– Types of core courses:

– Compulsory core course:

You must take these courses

– Flexible core course:

You must take four of these courses if you are studying a BCom

– Compulsory course:

A course you must study as part of a major

– Types of elective courses:

– UNSW Business School Elective:

You can choose a Business School course

– Free Elective:

You can choose a course, within or outside of the Business School

– Elective courses:

A list of courses to choose from as part of a major

– Major requirements:

You must study a total of 48 UOC (8 courses) in a major; the handbook site for that major will tell you what they are.

You must complete at least one major.

– General Education:

You must complete 12 UOC of anything that isn’t offered by the Business School

– Pre-requisites vs. Co-requisites:

Pre-requisites: Course(s) that you must take before you can enrol in a course

Co-requisites: Course(s) that you must take before or at the same time

3. Beware the overlap! Types of core courses

– Compulsory core courses can – and probably will – at the same time be the start of your major, i.e.

compulsory course

4. Beware the overlap! Electives – what elective?

– Doing a double major?

– You will use most – if not all – your Business School Electives and Free Electives for core and

elective courses in your second major.

Which approach

to university studies will you take?

Bob diligently takes notes in class and from the

recommended readings, before accurately reproducing

the information in essays and other coursework.

Karen approaches tutorials and other

group-work with the purpose of finding fault in the

views expressed by fellow students.

Sarah questions information presented in class and in

texts, before attempting to draw her own interpretation

of the gathered information.

Pete sets out to present an original

viewpoint by disregarding existing ideas or research.
