LA VALETTE VILLAGE – BAMBOUS
La Valette Model Village was selected and few programmes were
launched for the inhabitants.
Brief on the village: under the Integrated Social Development
Programme (ISDP) the National Empowerment Foundation (NEF)
has been focusing and providing social housing facilities to support
vulnerable families and recently
Some 200 families have benefitted with the setting up of housing
units at La Valette, Bambous which is also part of a rehabilitation
programme for families living in extreme poverty.

• POVERTY - although being finally owners of a house, the
beneficiaries are still striving and struggling to live.
• Many still unemployed
• Not much improvement in their quality of life.
• Still dependent on institutions & other individuals for day to day
living

Staff of BRDC - as volunteers to the Quartier de Lumiere NGO for the remedial class. Emphasis on creativity rather than academic work (drawing, painting, beads making, greeting card)
Talks: based sexual education were conducted with a view to educate the teenagers the risk they run due to unprotected sex and teenage pregnancy
Creativity day (painting on cloth and sandwich making, drawing and painting)
Film projections- violence @ home, break the silence, emphasis laid on human values, peace N love, respect for others, honesty.
Educate the parents as well as the children on human values, importance of families, importance of education & hygiene.

Mushroom production project is helping families with a meal.
7 enroll for the mushroom processing training
Sculpture class: Participated in 2 grand exhibition at Caudan & Cascavelle.
Learn new skills & making use of their free time wisely
Remedial class- individual attention are given to those who cannot
assimilate. Making progress gradually in school as well as remedial class.
Talks/workshop- help inform and educate the children as well as adults,
allow them to communicate, voice out & report cases since they are aware
of their rights.

Gradually integrating themselves in their new
village, sharing knowledge & ideas
Others who did not undergo training also started
growing mushroom for a trial. Got to know about
this new product - Oyster mushroom but it’s a
healthy vegetarian food.
Sculpture - 2nd batch starting in May and female
participants have doubled. (From 4 to 7)
11 CPE dropout adolescents have join the 2nd
chance programme.

LESSONS LEARNT
Depending upon approach, a trust is built.

When training courses would start, door to door
visit have to be conducted to explain the
programme and to encourage them.
Responsibilities need to be shared.

outside the village

How will the project/process be sustained?
Full monitoring & Holistic help provided
Looking forward that they start producing at large scale
7 persons looking for a vacant house for growing mushroom.
Now want to market their own product. Make it known so that
Mauritian family start consuming it twice a week
Same project will be replicated with another batch from the
Bambous village.
