WHERE I’M FROMBy Carol George
I am from country roads, hollers,
And the interstate,
From Granny Smith apples growing wild
And fields of hay swaying in the wind,
From iron bridges
To high rise buildings.
I am from the little house that sits in the valley.
I am from dinners on Sunday after church
Where generations attended and help build,
And where running water and indoor plumbing were a recent commodity.
I am from homemade ice cream
On the fourth of July.
I’m from the state capital of Charleston
And raised in the hills of Mannington.
I am from…
The next generations,
From my daughter who is next in a line of strong women
To her toddler son
And newest addition of a daughter to bless our family
And continue the legacy.
Where I am from…
Is where I am going.
