DAN’S STORY

• The Daniel Baird Foundation has been set up after our brother andson Daniel Baird of just 26 years of age was fatally stabbed in theearly hours of 8th July 2017, outside The Forge Tavern, Digbeth inBirmingham following a night out with friends

• There was no first aid or bleeding control kit available. Dan diedshortly after arriving at hospital due to catastrophic bleeding

• Dan’s Mother, Lynne Baird, would often lie awake and question whythis tragedy happened and how it could have been prevented

DAN’S STORY

• Lynne researched online and found that blood loss trauma kits

were readily available in America following a national campaign

(Stop the Bleed) after the Sandy Hook School Shooting in 2012.

• The core objective for the Daniel Baird Foundation is to:

• Lobby MPs to raise awareness in Government and the General Public

• Encourage Property Managers & Business Owners to keep accessible

Bleed Control Kits on their premises

• Campaign for all First Aid Training Courses to incorporate Catastrophic

Bleed Control

DAN’S STORY

On creating the Daniel Baird Foundation, Lynne and Family have

established relationships with organisations who want to support the

charity and help to make a difference (Davenports, Blue Kit Medical,

Unite the Union and West Midlands Ambulance Trust)

“It is tragic that any person loses their life in such a senseless way. Supporting this campaign could assist our

crews dramatically, by buying valuable minutes that could be the difference between a life saved or lost.”

West Midlands Ambulance Trust Chief Executive, Anthony Marsh

CONTROL THE BLEED

• Control the Bleed is when a tourniquet is applied in an emergency

or life-threatening situation to control/stop the bleeding.

• Much like CPR training, “Control the Bleed” training provides any

person with the ability to recognise life-threatening bleeding,

intervene and possibly save a life.

HOW TO USE A TOURNIQUET

• Wrap the tourniquet around the bleeding arm or leg about three inches

above the bleeding site

• Do not place the tourniquet onto a joint, go above the joint if necessary

• Pull the free end of the tourniquet to make it as tight as possible

• Twist or wind the windlass until bleeding stops

• Secure the windlass to keep the tourniquet tight

• Note the time the tourniquet was applied

ENSURE YOUR SAFETY

• Before you offer any help you must ensure your own safety

• If you become injured you will not be able to help the victim

• Make sure the area is safe for you to provide care

• Protect yourself from blood-born infections by wearing gloves

• Good handwashing after contact with people, blood and body

fluids is key to prevent infection
