Gender and Media

Gender/sex• Gender:Refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women.Sex: refers to the biological and physiological characteristics that define men and women

Media•  The means of communication, as radio

and television, newspapers, and magazines, that reach or influence people widely.

• 1.Common problems in print media• perception in this field generally is negative• Male dominance• Lack of family support• Lack of self confidence• Women can not bear political influence• Employment on refrence rather than merit• Late working hours

fighting for equality • Tasneem ahmar is leading uks.• Geena davis also campaigns for gender equality in

media.

• media representations are the way in which the media portrays a particular group, communities, experiences, ideas or topic for a particular perspective

Stereotype production is based on

• Simplification• Exaggeration• Presentations of cultural attributes as being

natural

Consequences• Actual realization of the stereotypes• Can become a cause for gender based violence

(GBV)• Many incidence have broken out in the recent

years• Child infanticide rates are higher than ever• Female feticides rates are increasing• Horrible acid attacks have come forth

• Countertypes are the positive stereotypes• Focuses on positive elements of groups

Advertisement• It is Today an inescapable part of people’s social

settings.• Media images have circumscribed women’s mind

Body and soul to serve the main goals• The advertising is effecting the women in three

ways….. 1. Body image2. Sexuality3. Consumer spending habits

• Women are being used as a decorative and entertaining element

• Young female models are treated by advertisers as the important components in the advertisements

• Bodily charm is used to promote ads concerning physical fitness products, cosmetics

• Melodious voice make them more appreciable

authoritative• Has deep voice• In recent years representation of men in

commercials is lower than ever• Women are being used as an instrument of trade

demanding equal human rights and gender rights
