    OVERVIEW

VoIP is Voice over Internet Protocol (IP)based network

Voice over Internet Protocol, VoIP describes

the category of hardware and software thatenables people to make telephone calls viathe Internet. Voice signals are converted topackets of data, which are transmitted on

shared, public lines, hence avoiding the tollsof the traditional, public-switched telephonenetwork (PSTN).

    OVERVIEW (CONT.)

VoIP uses the Internet Protocol (IP) totransmit voice as packets over an IPnetwork.

VOIP can be achieved on any datanetwork that uses IP, like the Internet,Intranets and Local Area Networks (LAN).

The voice signal is digitized, compressedand converted to IP packets and thentransmitted over the IP network.

    OVERVIEW (CONT.)

VoIP services need only a regular phoneconnection, while others allow you tomake telephone calls using an Internet

    connection instead.

    WHATITDOES?

VoIP can allowyou to make acall directly from

a computer, aspecial VoIPphone, or a

traditional phoneusing an adapterto another VoIPphone or regular

    phone.

    TRANSMISSIONOF VOICE USING IP NETWORKS

Step 1: Because all transmissions mustbe digital, the callers voice is digitized.

Step 2: Next using complex algorithms the

digital voice is compressed and thenSeparated into packets; and using theInternet protocol, the packets are

addressed and sends across the networkto be reassembled in the proper order atthe destination.

TRANSMISSION OF VOICE USING IP NETWORKS(CONT.)

Step 3: During transmission on the Internet, packets may be lost or delayed, or errors maydamage the packets. Conventional error

correction techniques would requestretransmission of unusable or lost packets, but ifthe transmission is a real-time voicecommunication that technique obviously would

not work, so sophisticated error detection andcorrection systems are used to create sound tofill in the gaps.

TRANSMISSION OF VOICE USING IP NETWORKS(CONT.)

Step 4: After the packets are transmittedand arrive at the destination, thetransmission is assembled and

decompressed to restore the data to anapproximation of the original form.

To make a call froma VoIP phone to aregular phone youneed a VoIP service

    provider(eg.FreewayCommunications orVonage) who have

equipment that routethe calls to thePSTN.

    ADVANTAGESUSING VOIP RATHER PSTN

When you are using PSTN line, you typically payfor time used to a PSTN line manager company:more time you stay at phone and more you'll pay.

In addition you couldn't talk with other that oneperson at a time.In opposite with VoIP mechanism you can talk allthe time with every person you want (the needed

is that other person is also connected to Internetat the same time), as far as you want.

If you're still not persuaded you canconsider that, at the same time, you canexchange data with people you are talking

with, sending images, graphs and videos.

    SIGNALINGAND MEDIA

A VoIP call is composed of two parts.1.Signaling.- The use of signals for

controlling communications. The signalingdoes the call set up, locate users, teardown sessions.

2.Media- After the call has been setup themedia transports the voice packets

PROTOCOLS Examples of protocols are SIP, H323In computing, a

protocol is a convention or standard that controls orenables the connection, communications, and datatransfer between two computing endpoints. ExampleTCP/IP, http, ftp.

In the field of telecommunications, acommunications protocol is the set of standardrules for data representation, signaling, authentication, and error detection required to send information over

    a channel

    PSTN VS INTERNET

    PSTN

    Voice networks usecircuit switching.

    Dedicated pathbetween calling andCalled party.

    Bandwidth isreserved in advance.

    Cost is based on

    distance and time.

    INTERNET

    It uses packetswitching.

    No dedicated pathbetween sender andreceiver.

It acquires andreleases bandwidth, asit is needed.

    Cost is not dependent

    on time and distance.

CUSTOMER DEMANDS OF VOICE TODAY VERSUSNATIONAL SECURITY (CONT.)

Support operational flexibility. Maintain operationregardless of the network health/status of anyinterconnected networks.

Support backward and forward compatibility. Thismeans more than just simple network growth. Theability to maintain communications between networktypes regardless of the software or hardware versionsin place is an enormous benefit to the users of theInternet.

Adaptive/Dynamic Routing This is an importantcapability during these times of national security.

    QUALITYOF SERVICE

QoS involves the following Subjectiveneeds: Does the service meet the customers

    CONCLUSION

As data traffic continues to increase andsurpass that of voice traffic, theconvergence and integration of these

technologies will not only continue toimprove, but also will pave the way for atruly unified and seamless means ofcommunication. Implementing VoIP canprovide significant benefits and savings toyour company.
