Radiological Protection & Safety

• Assessment , protection and control of the ionizing radiation effects, in order to prevent and limit the risks to public health and environment;

– Environment radioactivity monitoring– Evaluation of doses, risks and biological effects.– Radioactive wastes– Transport of radioactive materials– National ionizing radiation standarts .

• Fulfillments of tasks assigned by national law and international treaties

• Representation in international organizations and working groups (EC, OCDE, IAEA… )

• Consulting activity for the Government

Acting partially as a “Regulatory Body”

Page 5: Presentation of ITN

Radiological Monitoring- National monitoring programme- Visit of nuclear ships- Uranium mines, Radon concentrations

Dose Evaluation & Risk Assessment• Individual monitoring and Central Dose Registry• Dose evaluation• Cellular dosimetry and cromossomic aberrations• Radiological safety and risk assessment• Shielding calculations and computational dosimetry

Radioactive Waste Management- Licensing of sealed sources- Detection of radioactive elements in scrap metals- Conditioning and interin storage of wastes

Metrology of Ionizing Radiations• Maintenance of National Standards• Calibration of instruments

Health / Life Sciences

Activities centered on unique facilities and the expertise in radiochemistry, radiation science and in ion beams, the underlying physics, chemistry and biology, bringing a distinctive advantage for R&D activities on new ways of exploiting microbiology, modern molecular biology and innovative drug design for therapy and diagnostic.

Page 11: Presentation of ITN

• Radiopharmacy; synthesis, and characterisation of radiopharmaceuticals for therapy or diagnosis. (e.g. novel organic or organo-metallic complexes as specific radiotracers).

• Ecotoxicology : using the ion microprobe to study relationship between toxic elements in breathed particles and chronic respiratory diseases.

• Gamma irradiation to control the bioburden in pharmaceutical materials and devices, to improve the quality of food and to wastewater treatment.

Strong collaboration both with University, Hospitals and Industry
