WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE A CO-OP ENGINEERING STUDENT WITH THE CITY OF EDMONTON?

- It gives me an edge over other graduate student and improve my resume.

- I never had a slight clue on what it feels like to be called a mechanical engineer until I started working for the city fleet department.

- Working with the city of Edmonton has provide the chance for me to apply knowledge from academic work to real live situations.

- Working with other professional engineers is just the best feelings for me.

- I have my own office - Provide an opportunity for field trips- Working with the city is more like a family setting.

PROJECTS I HAVE WORKED ON WITH THE FLEET.- Electric Fire outbreak in sweeper Truck .- Product evaluation for oil master 1.- H3899 Labrie Steering Incident- Tool Alignment for transit buses- Reliability study for drainage vacuum/eductor truck - Designing a lifting devices for transit driver seat.- Modification of labrie door pin.

ELECTRICAL FIRE OUTBREAKRecommendations:Base on previous and recent invent on electric fire outbreak, Fleet Engineering should carry out a campaign for:Enforce a proper wiring of electric wire to avoid contact with each other.Apply the use of fuse or circuit breakers were appropriate. Wires that are close to the exhaust system should be properly

RELIABILITY STUDY FOR DRAINAGEResponsibility as a Reliability Co-op engineering student:• Analysis of maintenance history and failure data to

prioritize issues and opportunities• Develop preventative and predictive maintenance strategies• Perform Root Cause Failure Analysis investigations• Conduct equipment assessments to understand life

expectancy• Develop and support long-term maintenance plan and asset

management goals

DESIGNING A LIFTING DEVICES FOR TRANSIT BUS SEAT. 2 Need/Goal StatementNeed: The technicians in The City of Edmonton fleet garage are

presently lifting the driver seat in the transit buses by fastening the seat belt and then pulling the fastened seat belt with a boom.

Goal: design a device that will help in lifting this seat, without using the driver seat belt. The devices will serve as an attachment to pick up the seat.

3 Objectives/Constraints and RationaleIn this section will address the initially proposed objectives and

constraints for the project; as well as identifying the rationale behind each of these choices. Here are the outline the objectives in detail individually; a summary chart is provided first (Table 1), in order to clearly outline the objectives in brief.

DESIGNING A LIFTING DEVICES FOR TRANSIT BUS SEAT

Objectives DescriptionSafety Must not endanger the client during operation.Size Target width is about 16 inches by 6 inches tall and 7

inches deep.Weight Must be light enough to be lift by hand, but heavy

enough to remain stable.Cost The lifting mechanism must not exceed $100.Center of gravity/design analysis

This lifting mechanism must be pick at the center of gravity to avoid swerving during lifting. In getting the center of gravity three different method were applied. 1) The tipping test 2) Pivot test 3) the angle test. Design analysis involves understand the strength of this design. This requires application of some design principle which are factor of safety, moment diagram, stress calculation, force analysis.

Usability The final product will be operated by the client.
