What is RADAR ON RAIA?

The RADAR ON RAIA project aims to update and extend beyond the Galician border the HF

radar network that has been operating since 2011 in the framework of the RAIA

Observatory. The cross-border infrastructure will improve the knowledge of ocean dynamics

from a local to a regional level in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula.

The project will allow the establishment of a cross-border collaboration beyond the physical

infrastructure itself, developing a sharing strategy of maintenance procedures, validation

and data processing on both sides of the border, as well as an easy and public access to

all the information.

In addition, new products will be developed to exploit the potential of the HF radar

technology.

THE GOAL

✓ Implemented through collaborationof 13 partners (7 PT + 6 SP/Galicia)with different expertise in the scopeof the RAIA, RAIA.co and RAIA.tecINTERREG projects (2009-2016).

✓Support the development of operational oceanography along the NW Iberian coast.

✓Support regional and local socio-economic needs.

Improve the knowledge of the ocean

LINES OF WORK

1. Consolidation of a cross-border HF radar network

Reinforcement of the HF radar Galician Observation System and its

operation, acquiring a new HF radar station (13.5MHz) for Leça da

Palmeira, the adjustment of the Cabo Fisterra antenna and the

update of Galician antennas.

Expected results:

• Identification of the best locations to ensure the coverage of

the Portuguese-Galician coast.

• Development of a common management strategy at both

sides of the border.

• Traceability study of the radial and total current data of all HF

radar sites (5 MHz, 13.5 MHz y 42.6 MHz).

2. Data validation

Ensure the proper operation of all equipment and data

quality as a basis to build trust in the use of this new

technology.

Expected results:

• Adaptation and improvement of the existing

methodology, based on the homogenization of

maintenance procedures, standardization of data

formats and their accessibility.

• Data quality monitoring in real-time.

• Assessment of the accuracy of surface current velocities

and waves measured by HF radar systems from a

geophysical point of view by using Eulerian and

Lagrangian validations.

3. Spatial Data Infrastructure

Assure data accessibility through the development of a

Spatial data infrastructure, compatible with the RAIA

Observatory and other European data portals.

Expected results:

• Standardization of radial, total and interpolated current

data in a single format with a unified list of metadata.

• Consolidation and start-up of the catalogue, display and

download services based on the standards for their

exploitation.

• Design and development of a cross-border training

action integrated with Campus del Mar.

4. Products for end users

Development of products and services to support an efficient management of the marine

environment based on the HF radar network of the RAIA Observatory. For example, improvements in

the sea state description or identification of relevant accumulation areas for the marine ecosystems

management.
