WAYS TO SUPPORT OUR HOSTS’ MINISTRIES
In addition to the $6 cost of each meal, the presbytery collects a Hunger Offering at every stated meeting. One half is sent to the Presbyterian Hunger Fund while the other half goes to a hunger ministry of the host’s choosing. Please give generously as you register.
We also encourage you to bring an item to the meeting to support a designated ministry. See more information inside this packet about both these initiatives that support God’s work through the host organization.
PRINCIPLES OF PARLIAMENTARY PROCEDURE
Courtesy to all - One item at a time - Majority rule Respect the rights of the minority - Justice for all - Partiality for none
“For us as Presbyterians, parliamentary law is a tool we use which is a servant to our theological understanding of the purpose of a governing body: to seek God’s will for our actions in the world, as we witness to our faith in Jesus Christ.”
- from “Parliamentary Procedures in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)”by Marianne L. Wolfe.
A Brief History of the Covenant Presbyterian Church, Springfield, Ohio
The history of Covenant Presbyterian Church began with the chartering of First Presbyterian Church on July 17, 1819, with twenty-seven members and Andrew Steele as supply pastor. John Humphreys and Melvyn Baker were the ruling elders. In 1827, the first full time pastor was called, the Rev. Franklin Putnam, and in 1830 construction began on the first building.
The congregation continued to grow, and in 1860 it gave birth to Second Presbyterian Church. In 1876, the ministry expanded with the formation of Oakland Chapel in a neighborhood known as East Springfield. This work became Oakland Presbyterian Church in 1914.
A year after the expansion to the east, Presbyterian ministry in Springfield expanded to the north through a Sunday school that became Third Presbyterian Church in 1894.Third Church eventually merged with Valley View United Presbyterian Church to become Northminster, which built a new building on Villa Road.
In June 1919, First Presbyterian and Second Presbyterian merged to become Covenant Presbyterian Church. Both churches needed more space so the beautiful gothic building designed by George E. Savage of Philadelphia was opened in November 1927. The stained-glass windows were designed by P.J. Reeves of Philadelphia, and are adorned with art depicting Biblical scenes. Covenant’s musical program was greatly enhanced in 1962 when a Schantz organ, replacing the 35-year-old Skinner organ, was placed in the choir loft as a memorial to Charles L. Bauer, longknown as the “dean of music” in Springfield. We have been greatly blessed by the 46-yearministry of our organist, Trudy Faber, and by our chancel and handbell choirs.
With a rich tradition of sacred music, dynamic preaching, and community involvement, we journey into our third century as a congregation that is “Downtown—Mission-Driven—Inclusive.”

TWO WAYS TO SERVE!
HUNGER OFFERING
The presbytery collects a financial offering at the meeting registration table as you arrive that supports both a local hunger organization that the host church chooses and the Presbyterian hunger assistance through the denomination. For the February meeting, the local portion will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank in Springfield, whose Executive Director, Tyra Jackson, is director of Christian Education at the Springfield: Covenant Church. Tracing its roots back to 1981, the Food Bank’s stated mission is “targeting hunger to serve and educate through community partnerships.” Besides working through agencies in three counties (Champaign, Clark and Logan), the Food Bank has a fresh market pantry, a mobile pantry, a children’s feeding program, and a senior program. They are sponsoring Empty Bowls fundraisers in each county in February through April of 2020.
MISSION AT EVERY MEETING
At each stated presbytery meeting we invite presbyters to bring items to the meeting to support a mission of the host church. Springfield: Covenant requests support for the Food Pantry at Christ Episcopal Church, Springfield. The specific items requested are paper products, shampoo and toothpaste, cleaning supplies such as laundry detergent, peanut butter and quick meals such as tuna. The pantry is open the third Wednesday of each month.
Each gift you make—to the Hunger Offering and to the Mission At Every Meeting initiative--is a sign both of our gratitude to God and of the covenant that links together all our presbytery’s churches in ministry and love. Thank you!

HOSPITALITY REPORT—GREETINGS AND MEMORIALS COMMITTEE ON MINISTRY—SUPPLEMENTAL PACKET
February 8, 2020
Greetings to a New Pastor Among Us
Minister of the Word and Sacrament Anna Owens was called on February 2 by congregational vote to serve as associate pastor for spiritual growth at Dayton: Westminster, beginning February 10. Anna is currently a member of the Mid-Kentucky Presbytery. She most recently served as the Associate Pastor for Campus Ministry at First Presbyterian Church of Auburn, AL. She comes to Dayton via Louisville, KY where her husband, Josh Sweeney, has been continuing his Master of Divinity degree at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He
has been accepted as a transfer student to the United Theological Seminary in Dayton.
Anna was born and raised in Sumter, South Carolina. After developing a love for music as a teenager, she attended Converse College in Spartanburg, SC, to pursue a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance.
Anna served as a Young Adult Volunteer (YAV) in Belfast, Northern Ireland from 2012-2013. It was through her work as a YAV and daily, contemplative prayer that Anna discerned a call to seminary, and graduated from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. Anna’s first call out of seminary was to the Lake Fellow in Parish Ministry Residency Program at Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis, IN.
Anna and Josh were married in 2016 and have two rescue dogs, Abby and Newt. They are joyfully expecting their first child this summer.
Memorial for Rev. Glenn E. Thompson, HR
Minister of the Word and Sacrament Glenn E. Thompson, HR died January 24 at age 84. Born in Jackson, Ohio, he earned a BA degree at Otterbein College in Westerville, OH and an M.Div. degree from United Theological Seminary in Dayton. He earned a D. Min. through the Consortium of Higher Education in Dayton in 1980. Glenn was ordained in the Evangelical United Brethren Church in 1960 and served several EUB and United Methodist Churches and a
federated church, all in Ohio, over the next decade. He was received in this presbytery in November 1970 having been called as pastor both of the UP church in Clifton known as Cliffside and the Clifton Presbyterian Church, churches that through merger in 1972 became the Clifton United Presbyterian Church we know today. He was active in presbytery departments, cabinets and commissions during his time among us. Glenn served at the Clifton church until 1983, when he suffered a severe medical setback and had to leave full-time ministry. His obituary noted that “as he recovered and faced many hardships as a result of his illness, he was an inspiration and encouragement to those who came in contact with him.” A service celebrating his life and supporting his family was held at the Clifton church on February 1. Glenn’s life and ministry will be remembered with thanks to God at the February 8 presbytery meeting.
