Prayer of Confession God of grace, you shine your light upon us with your glory, yet we hide our faces from your light. You

speak to us about a holy mystery, yet we do not listen to your word. Forgive us, we pray. Grant us the wisdom

to know and proclaim the gift of Christ to the world. Hear now the prayers we bring to you in silence …

Presentation of Our Tithes and Offerings

Prayer of Dedication

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in

heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not

into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Prayers of the People and the Lord's Prayer

Sacrament of the Lord's Supper

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Lift up your hearts.

We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give our thanks and praise.

All Communion bread is gluten-free and the cup is juice so that all may come to the table. The ushers will invite

you to come to the table. Receive the elements by intinction (take a piece of bread and dip it into the cup). Return

to your pew by a side aisle. If you wish to receive communion in your pew, please let an usher know.

8:30 a.m.

Liturgy

Sanctus 562 (sung) Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,

Heaven and earth are full, full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest, hosanna in the highest.

Ritual of Friendship and Invitations to Discipleship

We worship God in the world by standing before the Lord on behalf of all people. We serve humankind by

discerning what God is doing in the world and joining God in that work. We find guidance in what God has done in

the past and in what God promises for the future as witnessed to in the scriptures. We affirm that God is at work now,

especially in events and movements that advance justice, compassion, and peace.

Postlude

Notes from the Director of MusicThe Greek word "epiphany" (έπιφάνεια) means "appearance" and refers above

all to the "manifestation" of a god. The symbolism of light pervades both our

service today: Christ calls us out of darkness and into light! There is plentiful

music written over the centuries for this special day, including the wonderful

hymns we sing today, the 12th-century carol "Personent Hodie" that we sing

today in a popular English translation, and two relatively new carols by English

composers: the first, a gentle 1995 setting of Christina Rossetti's popular poem

"In the bleak midwinter" that moves the birth to a more familiar winter scene

(rather than Bethlehem) by original King's Singers member Bob Chilcott; the

second from 1983 by organist Paul Edwards called "No small wonder." The

latter combines a simple melody with complex, jazz-like harmonies, analogous

to the wealth of meaning underneath the simple language of this poem: "Small

wonder the love, small wonder the grace, the power, the glory, the light of his

face; but all to redeem my poor heart—no small wonder!" To close the service,

we'll have a chorale-prelude by Bach from his Orgelbüchlein ("Little Organ

Book") written to celebrate the New Year, celebrating the ups and downs of

daily life: "Our hearts are pining to see your shining, dying or living, to you are

clinging now and forever. Alleluia!"
