The course analyses major international security questions, especially with regard to the ‘New Threats’ agenda. It surveys practical issues of protocol, as well as knowledge and practices of international conventions. It builds confidence and experience though a proven simulation of a ‘Defence Attaché tour’. All aspects of the couse meet the requirements of the Geneva Standards for Defence Attaché training. Target audience This course is designed for future Defence Attachés sent abroad and civil servants involved in international relations. Newly appointed or recently accredited Defence Attachés are accepted, places permitting. Why you should attend

Defence Attachés operate at the crossroads of diplomacy, strategy, economics and public relations. As their roles and missions are complex and evolving, it is important for new Defence Attachés to be properly prepared to take on new functions. This orientation module will give each individual the opportunity to fill his or her own gaps in knowledge and skills.

Course design

This orientation module offers professional preparation for the military and diplomatic roles of future Defence Attaché and civil servants involved in international relations, including knowledge of the international conventions and practices that are an essential part of a successful tour abroad. The course uses an interactive learning approach based on experts panels, case studies and presentations.

Guest speakers are experienced Defence Attachés, practitioners and academics. Each presentation covers a specific topic and is followed by a discussion period. Participants also receive reference material during the course.

Faculty profiles

The course teaching staff includes GCSP’s international faculty composed of academics and practitioners with broad experience in international affairs, security policy, diplomacy and military affairs, as well as high-level international guest speakers from civil society, government, academia and international organisations.
