Preparing Students for the Global Economy

What is Project Lead The Way?

PLTW is a National, not-for-profit organization with the goal of increasing the nation’s biomedical, engineering and technical workforce.

PLTW’s Three Key Components: • Curricula - Rigorous and Relevant middle and

high school courses (with college credit options) that use problem-based learning.

• Professional Development – High-quality, rigorous, continuing, and course-specific training institute (1 to 2 weeks per subject).

• Partnerships – Schools/Universities/ Business & Industry.

What Students do Well in PLTW?

Students who:

• Show interest in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math) career fields.

• Are creative – Like art and design. • Enjoy working with computers. • Learn best in “hands-on” classes. • Are in the upper 80% of their class.

Why Do We Need PLTW? • There are 1.3 M engineering & technology jobs open in

the U.S. without trained people to fill them.

• According to the Government we will need 15M engineers and tech workers by 2020, but…

• Since 1988, the number of Engineering and Technology Graduates has decreased by ~20%.

• By 2014, over 3.6 million new healthcare jobs will be created.

• Eight of the twenty occupations projected to have the greatest growth over the next 10 years are in healthcare. (U.S. Dept. of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2006)

• Design and Modeling (DM): Students are introduced to and use the design process to solve problems and understand the influence that creative and innovative design has on our lives.

• Automation & Robotics (AR):

Students use a robust platform to design, build and program a solution to solve an existing problem.

Gateway To Technology Foundation Units:

Gateway To Technology Specialization Units: • Flight and Space (FS): Students explore the

science behind aeronautics and use their knowledge to design, build and test an airfoil. Custom-built simulation software allows students to experience space travel.

• Magic of Electrons (ME): Through hands-on projects, students explore the science of electricity, behavior and parts of atoms, and sensing devices. Students acquire knowledge and skills in basic circuitry design and examine the impact of electricity on our lives.

• Science of Technology (ST): How has science affected technology throughout history? To answer this question students apply the concepts in physics, chemistry and nanotechnology to STEM activities and projects.

• Medical Detectives (MD): Medical

Detectives (MD) explores the biomedical sciences through hands-on projects and labs that require students to solve a variety of medical mysteries. Students investigate medical careers, vital signs, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, as well as human body systems such as the nervous system.

Gateway To Technology Specialization Units:

• Energy and the Environment (EE): Students investigate the impact of energy on our lives and the environment. They design and model alternative energy sources and participate in an energy expo to demonstrate energy concepts and innovative ideas.

Gateway To Technology Specialization Units:

• Green Architecture (GA): In this unit, students are introduced to architectural plans, construction styles, alternative materials and processes, dimensioning, measuring and architectural sustainability. Students use a 3D architectural software program to create an environmentally friendly home using shipping containers.

Summary of Program Requirements • All GTT units are designed as nine-week units on a

standard 45-50 minute schedule. • Schools may offer courses from grade six through

grade eight in a manner they determine reasonable and appropriate for their school. Local schools will determine the PLTW sequence of units they will implement to fulfill their agreement.

Biomedical Sciences High School Program Summary of Program Requirements

• All PLTW courses require concurrent enrollment in

college preparatory mathematics and science courses.

• All PLTW courses are designed as year-long courses on a standard 45-50 minute schedule. For schools with double period / block scheduling, these courses can be completed in a semester.

• Principles of the Biomedical Sciences

Students study research processes, human medicine and are

introduced to bio-informatics.

• Human Body Systems

Students study basic human physiology, especially in

relationship to human health.

• Medical Interventions

Students investigate various medical interventions that extend

and improve quality of life, including gene therapy,

pharmacology, surgery, prosthetics, rehabilitation, and

supportive care.

• Biomedical Innovation/Capstone Course Students work with a mentor, identify a science research topic, conduct research, write a scientific paper, and defend team conclusions to a panel of outside reviewers.

High School Program: Biomedical Science

Human medicine, research processes and an introduction to bioinformatics.

Students investigate human body systems and various health conditions including: heart disease, diabetes, sickle-cell disease, hypercholesterolemia, and infectious diseases.

Biomedical Sciences

Basic human physiology, especially in relationship to human health. A central theme is how the body systems work together to maintain internal balance and good health.

Course #2: Human Body Systems

Example: Unit 2: Communication Build a model brain and design a “map” of brain function Use data acquisition software and sensors to compare reaction time for reflex and voluntary actions. Diagnose a mystery endocrine disorder Dissect a cow eye and experiment with lenses

Students take measurements of bones to determine if the bone is from a male or female and the ethnicity of the person
