• The Common Proficiency Test (CPT) is the first level of Chartered Accountancy examinations in India or in other words, CPT is a first step towards becoming a Chartered Accountant. The exam is conducted by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) twice a year in the months of June and December.

• The CPT Exam will be held in 147 cities spread across India, as well as at 4 other overseas places as follows: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Bahrain, Doha and Kathmandu.

What is CPT Exam

• Information Brochure and Hard copy of Application form can be collected from 4 April, 2014 till 25 April, 2014 from ICAI Bhawan, Delhi

• Last Date to Apply: 24 April, 2014

• Exam Date: CA CPT for June 2014 will be held on 22 June, 2014 (Sunday).

• Examination Schedule:

• Session- I is to be held in Morning from 10.30 AM to 12.30 PM

• Section - Fundamentals of AccountingSection - B Mercantile Laws

• Session - II is to be held in Afternoon from 2.00 PM to 4.00 PM

• Section - C General EconomicsSection - D Quantitative Aptitude

CPT Examination Important Dates

• CPT is an objective type test with having 0.25 negative marking criterions for every wrong answer.

• The Maximum Marks that CPT holds is 200 marks.

• The test contains two sessions, each of 2 hours duration.

• The break of one and half hour between the two test sessions is provided.

CPT Exam Pattern

• Offline mode will charge Rs. 500 extra as cost of application form

• Online mode at http://icaiexam.icai.org will not charge any extra cost of application form

• Examination fee to be charged extra from both candidates, weather applying through Online or Offline mode.

CPT Applying Mode:

• A student who is registered for Common Proficiency Test can appear in the CPT Exam, after s/he has appeared in Senior Secondary Examination (10+2 examination) conducted by a recognized examining body. 

• Note: The Candidates are permitted to opt the Hindi medium Question Paper Booklet for answering the questions in OMR Sheet.

• To get qualify in CPT exam, the candidate must obtain a minimum of 30% marks in each subject. 

Eligibility for Appearing in CPT Exam:

• The CPT exam tests the Candidate’s knowledge in four subjects i.e., Accounting, Mercantile Laws, General Economics and Quantitative Aptitude.  

• Session I (100 Marks) – 2 Hours

• Section A: Fundamentals of Accounting - 60 Marks

• Section B: Mercantile Laws - 40 Marks

• Session II (100 Marks) – 2 Hours

• Section C: General Economics - 50 Marks

• Section D: Quantitative Aptitude – 50 Marks

CPT Exam Syllabus:

• The CPT exam requires you to qualify the exam by securing minimum 30 % in each session/subject hence do not get anxious or nervous about attaining a high rank in CPT, as that will not be counted.

• The candidate must maintain least marks to be qualified for further CA exams which are to score Minimum of 50% marks in the aggregate of all the sections/subjects.

• Be cautious if you find a particular question to be very-very easy, since a trick might be behind that question to trap the inattentive candidate.

• Read National dailies, General Knowledge affairs related to Indian economy, Law & Business news etc to help you score more marks.

• Do not skip Theory part in Accounts subjects.• You can score full in Mercantile law related questions,

as there are only 3 laws in the syllabus. Make sure to cram all the 3 by Practicing, writing the Mercantile laws point-wise to test your understanding.

• Choose best cpt exam books and definitely solve previous year’s exam papers to get an idea of the CPT paper and to test your strength and weakness along side.

• Any serious student would know that learning basics and understanding fundamentals must be the Priority, followed by practicing all sections to retain the learnt information. If the foundation is strong, the further problems would seem easy to be solved.

• The second focus must be on practicing as much as possible, which will lead the candidate to not only gain confidence but will also help to attempt answers correctly in a stipulated time-frame during the examination.

• It is always advised to leave a few chapters which require a lot of understanding time and the students are weak at. It is rather better to be proficient in those chapters which you are confident at doing. This trick will fetch more marks than wasting time on the chapters you do not have a strong hand at.
