Your Invitation

You’ve done it! After working on your application and CV, you’ve been invited to an interview.

This might come through by email, text or notification if you’ve applied through an app.

You might also get a call, so you might need to take notes of the important information.

The next slide shows a sample invitation.

What to look for

There was some key info about the interview to note:

Date & time, and how long it will last

Where the interview will happen

Who your interview is with

What you need to bring with you

What to do if you can’t make it

Different Types of Interviews

The next thing to consider is what

kind of interview you are going

to be preparing for.

You might not always be told

which type of interview you’ll

have but most interviews are

normally just you being asked

questions about your career so

far, and the job you’d be doing.

AI InterviewThese are new, and not used very

often, but you might be answering

questions with a computer

assessing your answers!

Different Types of Interviews

Trial Shift

Sometimes as part of an interview,

you’ll be asked to come in to work for

a few hours, a bit like an audition.

This is a way for you to show that

you’ve got the skills to do the job, or

that you can learn quickly.

These often happen in customer

service jobs, like retail or hospitality.

Different Types of Interviews

Assessment Centre / Group Interview

Sometimes you’ll be interviewed at the same time as a few other people.

You’ll be given tasks to do, and the interviewers will watch how you work with other people to see if you are the right person.

The people that the interviewers like the best will often have a 1-2-1 interview after.

Preparation

Now that you know what’s happening, it’s time to get ready for your interview.

Think about what you need to be ready to knock it out of the park:

How will you get there?

What are you going to wear?

What research can you do about the company?

What questions might they ask you, and how will you answer them?

Travel

You want to aim to be 15 minutes

early for your interview, so how are

you going to get there?

Buses are regular, but keep an eye

out for roadworks

Trains are reliable, but have a back up plan in case of a cancellation

Getting a lift is a great option, but

you’ll need to find your own way if you

get the job

Outfit & Appearance

Thinking about your outfit, what’s the

best thing to wear?

If in doubt, go smart.

Anything that can be ironed, needs

ironed!

Smart black shoes should be polished

If you can afford it, get a haircut a

couple of days before

Don’t go overboard on make-up or

perfume

Research

Researching the company before

you go in makes you look

organised, interested and keen to

stand out.

Doing this research will help you

think about what type of questions you might be asked at your

interview.
