5

Definition of Terms

Oracle 10g means both RDBMS and Application Server running on 10g.

Application Server = 10g - AS Database Management System = RDBMS in

context

Page 6: Preparing for 10g and Banner 7

Differences Between 9i And 10g

Robust database management tools Improved manageability

Tuning Monitoring Changes to installations and upgrades System management

What to Expect

Toolset change (moving from Forms and Reports 6i to Forms and Reports 10g

Significant UI changes No client server deployment with Forms 10g. Additional

training may be required for end users. Transparent effect concerning the API effort All product upgrades will be BIG since all forms are getting

redelivered. The upgrades will be comparable to Banner 5 for forms + extra APIs being delivered.

Forms 6i

When is Oracle Forms 6i desupported by Oracle?

Oracle forms 6i is desupported by Oracle in January 31, 2005

There is extended support (meaning no bug fixes and patches, no certification of new operating systems, but they will provide answers and workarounds) through January 31, 2008

Banner 6 to 7

Toolset change. Moving from Forms and Reports 6i Forms and Reports 10g

Going from Banner 6 to 7 is more complex because every form gets redelivered since we are moving to the oracle forms 10g toolset.

Huge UI changes across forms in banner 7. No more client server deployment with Forms 10G. You may

need to get trained on application server and trained on INB With the API effort, the effect is more or less transparent to the

end user. The system will behave like banner 6 All product upgrades will be BIG since all forms are getting

redelivered. The upgrades will be comparable to Banner 4 for forms + extra APIs being delivered.

Infrastructure

What do you have to change and plan for (mandatory) in order to move to Banner 7.0?

Oracle 10G toolset – Application Server 10G for forms and reports No client server option in Application Server 10G

If you have the concurrent user model for your Oracle licensing, you should revisit your Oracle licensing based upon a variety of new solutions regarding Banner 7.0, Workflow, ODS / EDW, etc.

12

Infrastructure

Hardware and software considerations - Banner 7 Oracle Versions

INB Oracle Forms and Reports 10g Can only be deployed on the web.

No client/server since Oracle does not support it With Oracle de-supporting client/server, SCT has no choice

but to follow suit. SSB

Oracle Application Server 10g, required for Banner 7 Database

Will require a minimum of Oracle 9i, Release 2. Looking to support Oracle 10g, currently testing in development, but will not require it.

13

Database Changes

Database Changes in Banner 7 Database changes are not extensive through out Banner Database changes are mostly in Banner Student for Concurrent

Curricula Database changes are there for the New VBS. No conversion

scripts for VBS but seed data is delivered modeled on existing VBS in Student and Financial Aid

Database changes for Multiple Pidm Prevention Tables for which APIs are being created have extra columns added

for Data Origin ( new column ) and Userid (if it did not exist before)

Each API comprises 3 packages. So there will be a lot of new database packages delivered.

14

Documentation Of Database Changes

When will we know what database changes have been made in Banner 7.0?

We will be publishing an early version of delta reports soon This will be a report by product that lists all the database changes since the last release (banner 6.x).

Will be posted to ActionWeb

15

What Is The Upgrade Process?

Given that you have no modifications, are there are any differences in upgrading to Banner 7.0, compared to prior upgrades?

Banner upgrade process similar to Banner 6.X New toolset – Oracle application server 10g Internet Native Banner required – infrastructure change if client is

on client/server Banner If the you elect to use the new VBS with FGAC, PII, Online multiple

PIDM prevention – additional setup required.

Page 16: Preparing for 10g and Banner 7

16

What Is The Upgrade Process?

If you have modifications, what is the effort required to upgrade to Banner 7.0?

Analyze mods to forms and convert to new version and new look and feel

If you intend to implement integration strategy, analyze impact of new APIs on all modified objects

Banner upgrade process similar to Banner 6.X Internet Native Banner required – infrastructure change if

client is on client/server Banner If elect to use the new VBS with FGAC, PII, Online multiple PIDM

prevention – additional setup required

17

What About In-House Code?

Will existing application code need to be re-written? Examples are Plus interfaces or other third party interfaces?

All interfaces have to be retested when Banner 7.0 is released Very few database table changes to core tables in Banner 7.0 so

majority of existing interfaces “should work” You may want to consider use of APIs in your existing application

interfaces

Page 18: Preparing for 10g and Banner 7

18

Migration Options

What are the options of moving to Banner 7.0? You will need to apply the Banner 6 upgrades (if you are on 5.x).

Then you will have to apply Banner 7. When moving from 5 to 6 you will be using the Oracle Forms 6i

toolkits When moving from 6 to 7 you will have to plan on revalidating the

environment or providing a second environment to support the Application Server 10g toolkit

Page 19: Preparing for 10g and Banner 7

19

SCT Banner 7

As we speak SunGard SCT is about to enter Beta testing for Banner 7.

SCT Banner 7.0 will require a minimum of Oracle 9i, Release 2 database with JVM (Version 9.2.0.3, Enterprise Edition).

We will not require Oracle 10g database for SCT Banner 7.0.

Page 20: Preparing for 10g and Banner 7

20

How do we get to 10g ?

Internet Native Banner 6.x IS NOT and WILL NOT be certified to run on Oracle 10g – not the RDBMS, not the Application Server .

The reason for this is that Banner 6.x INB uses forms that are designed to run on forms 6i not forms 10g. Therefore it is incompatible with the Oracle 10g Application Server.

Self-Service Banner 6.5 is already certified for Oracle 9.0.4.x (10g - AS)

This is what SunGard SCT installs on new sites. If you are running on a Banner 6 version certified to run SSB

on 9.0.4.x then upgrade your SSB iAS server to a 10g - AS server. That will be one less thing to deal with when you move to Banner 7.

22

Checklist For Moving To 10g

Are you already running Banner 6 ? If not, you need to get there first.

Are you running client-server? If you are, then you need to move to the web. Look into possible licensing issues.

If you are running on a Banner 6 version certified to run SSB on 9.0.4.x then upgrade your SSB iAS server to a 10g - AS server. That will be one less thing to deal with when you move to Banner 7.

Page 23: Preparing for 10g and Banner 7

23

Checklist For Moving To 10g

If both INB and SSB are running under the same Oracle Home then consider splitting them.

INB and SSB should really be on two different servers. Is your Banner 6.x database running on at least 9.2.0.3 ?

(Because of Patch 68, you should really be at 9.2.0.5.) If not, then upgrade to the latest RDBMS version available on your

platform. Oracle 10g database is not required or Banner 7. Once SunGard

SCT announces support for it, you can focus on upgrading to it.

Page 24: Preparing for 10g and Banner 7

24

Checklist For Moving To 10g

Have you remained a vanilla site? Any form that has been locally modified will have to be at the

very least converted and recompiled under 10 AS and tested to verify that it is compatible with SCT Banner 7.0.

Most likely, it will not be compatible because of the extensive changes made to forms.

Have you remained a vanilla site? Customized programs will have to be retested as well. You may

decide to use the opportunity to rewrite them to take advantage of the APIs.

Page 25: Preparing for 10g and Banner 7

25

Checklist For Moving To 10g

Is your database clean? Conversion programs tend to work better when they have less

data to deal with and when the database is internally healthy (no excess fragmentation, etc…)

Goremal ( Email) table has a primary key added in Banner 7. ( Infomration announced multiple times on boracle ). Please clean up the data in this table and eliminate duplicates. There is a script available on ACtionWeb that locates possible duplicates
