Spectrum TrainingContact UsPO Box 2107 Strathpine Centre QLD 4500 / P. 07 3881 3310 / [email protected] project trialed the collection of audio for assessment purposes.

We investigated ways and methods for collecting audio evidence from students bringing their own devices such as mobile phones and organisation provided devices such as digital voice recorders.5THE UNITS WE CHOSE ALLOW FOR ORAL ASSESSMENT5

Spectrum TrainingContact UsPO Box 2107 Strathpine Centre QLD 4500 / P. 07 3881 3310 / [email protected] the project was based around collecting evidence for assessment we decided to use two units from CHC40*** Certificate IV in Mental Health and three units from 30888QLD Certificate IV in Mentoring Diverse Groups.

The units we chose allow for oral assessment and the instruments that we used were audio recording devices.

The project delivered units to three cohorts eighteen learners in total. The learners were a mix of rural, remote and metropolitan Indigenous learners along with metropolitan non-Indigenous learners.6WHY AUDIO?6

Spectrum TrainingContact UsPO Box 2107 Strathpine Centre QLD 4500 / P. 07 3881 3310 / [email protected] evidence through conversation and observation is a common method to collect evidence but there is often still some writing involved; particularly with students with lower levels of literacy and numeracy. Currently written evidence of assessment is assessor centered and makes it easier to assess

What we have tried to do in this project is to reverse this and make it more engaging and less onerous and intimidating for the students7LEARNER CENTERED7

Spectrum TrainingContact UsPO Box 2107 Strathpine Centre QLD 4500 / P. 07 3881 3310 / [email protected] using an audio device to gather evidence for assessment are centered on the learner and requires the assessor to really listen and learn what their learners are expressing and articulating in their responses to assessment questions.

We felt that that with the assessor observing the student when undertaking assessments, it is direct observation and this is what we were able to achieve throughout our workshops we would consider this as primary source of evidence 8INDIGENOUS LEARNERS FROM REMOTE AREAS8

Spectrum TrainingContact UsPO Box 2107 Strathpine Centre QLD 4500 / P. 07 3881 3310 / [email protected] with Indigenous learners from remote areas the audio recordings captured a lot of rich and genuine material which is spontaneous and which participants would not have been able to write down and assessors would not have been able to adequately capture through note-taking.9MICHAEL AND MARIOAUDIO CLIP 9

10WHAT WORKED WELL10

High ExperienceYarningImmediacyLearners without a high level of education but with a high level of life or work experience.A lot of knowledge and wisdom comes through yarning. The immediacy of completing assessment tasks.

Spectrum TrainingContact UsPO Box 2107 Strathpine Centre QLD 4500 / P. 07 3881 3310 / [email protected] who have not had a high level of education or a positive experience of education, however with a high level of experience in their life or work, found this method of assessment appealing and enjoyableAs we found a lot of knowledge and wisdom comes through yarning or conversation which is a natural way of expressing so why not capture this!Immediacy of completing assessment tasksImbedding appropriate text within the audio files11MELLISSA AND LEONIEAUDIO CLIP 11

Students had a conversation about the following question which was provided as part of the assessment question bank -

Discuss how the experience of mental illness/distress impacts on a persons ability to retain a sense of full citizenshipSense of self-stigma for people experiencing mental illness/distress plus societal attitudes
